A vintage original Finnish cinema poster for the first screening in Finland of the German Oscar-nominated terror movie THE DEVIL STRIKES AT NIGHT. The film was first screened in Finland in 1958 with no further theatrical runs. A stunning example of cinema advertising art this poster is in Fine vibrant condition approximate size is 23.5 inches by 15.7 inches standard Finnish A2 format. SIGNS OF USE: no pinholes to the corners but rather two tape residue marks to the upper margin picture not affected. Fold-line to middle a couple of minor scrapes to the upper right corner which has resulted in tiny loss of colour but otherwise in outstanding condition FINE. Signed in the plate by the prolific film poster artist Engel. ‎The Palace Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue W. London Wednesday December 15th 1915. Ten unpaginated 26 x 22 cm. leaves comprising three leaves of letterpress cover title and back cover and seven leaves each with a 17 x 14 cm black-and-white photograph laid down. A frail survival with the photographic portraits in good condition but the brittle leaves chipped and discoloured. One bifolium intact with remains of string binding all the other leaves detached and loose making it difficult to ascertain whether the item is or is not complete. The entry for the only copy traced on OCLC WorldCat at the Universitätsbibliothek Bayreuth describes it as ' 6 Bl. : : nur Ill.' The title carries an attractive illustration by Norman Keene and lists the actors photographed in character as Miss Gertie Millar Miss Gwendoline Brogden Miss Teddie Gerrard Mr. Arthur Playfair Miss Gina Palerme Mr. A. Simon-Girard Mr. Nelson Keys; with 'Books and Lyrics by Arthur Wimperis and Basil Hood. Music by Lionel Moncokton and Herman Finck. Produced by Edward Royce and Tom Reynolds.' The illustrations are all present as per subjects listed on title-page andt in the following note on the back cover: 'The Music of "Bric-a-Brac" is published by Chappell & Co. and Hawkes & Son. He begins as follows: 'You are probably aware that after the fiscal follies of the earlier part of the last century the people of the United States resolutely set their faces against taxation except for revenue purposes for the absolute necessities of the Govt. - this lasted till the outbreak of the Civil War when the extraordinary demands upon the Treasury required widespread taxation - & wherever home industries were taxed equivalent or greater import duties were levied.' Whaite was first cousin twice removed of his more famous namesake. He was himself an excellent artist and teacher and there is a large collection of his work at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. LETTER: 1p. 4to. Fair on lightly-aged and creased paper. He begins: 'I am just trying to get away for a short holiday so I have crafted your testimonial at once. . We should miss you badly if it should so happen that you left us but that consideration need not stand in the way of my offering you the heartiest good wishes for your success.' ‎11 June 1937; on letterhead of the National Portrait Gallery London. 1p 4to. On discoloured and somewhat grubby paper folded twice for postage. Addressed to ‘S. Hodgson Esq.’ and signed ‘H M. Hake’. Hodgson has sent Hake ‘a manuscript fragment’ which does not seem to indicate either of ‘the portraits in the Gallery’. He has ‘looked up the record of portraits offered in the past but there is no mention of Mrs. Cruikshank or her executors.’ He asks a related question before turning to the subject of the physician Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson 1828-1896 who was in Hake’s opinion ‘more of a professional worthy than a national one’. Despite his opinion Hake ‘would not discourage his portrait being offered if it were not too large a portrait’. He is retaining the slip ‘manuscript fragment’ in case anything further occurs to him. ‘S. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. The present item is 2pp 8vo. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed ‘John Rothenstein’. He believes that Dosse asked him ‘to review the John books’ Michael Holroyd’s biography of Augustus John and his book with Malcolm Easton on John’s art for Art and Artists. ‘I don’t think I’m dreaming as have some copies wh. you sent me at the time. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with staining from staple. He introduces his subject as follows in the first paragraph: 'I regard it as a great honour to have been invited by Professor Lopez-Rey on behalf of the Secretariat of the United Nations to address the Second United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. The subject assigned to me is criminological and penological research a fascinating but intricate theme. I am honoured but also embarrassed for how can I be expected to say something new or important in so distinguished a company of experts from so many parts of the world I cannot but anticipate that much of what I have to say will appear to you self-evident or commonplace.' After providing an 'astounding list' of the 'sub-divisions' of criminology Razinowicz anounces that he deprecates 'those elaborate definitions and sub-divisions and the rather naive belief that clear-cut definitions can be provided' proposing instead the 'workmanlike description' given in the lecture. The only copy traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat at Birmingham. The lecture was republished in a revised form in Radzinowicz's collection 'In Search of Criminology' Harvard 1962. ‎Sir Richard Owen palaeontologist. Autograph Letter Signed to Lady Cullum enclosing a long translation by Samuel Birch of inscriptions on an Egyptian statue in the British Museum annotated by Owen and with transcription of letter to him by Birch.‎

‎Owen's letter to Lady Cullum dated from Sheen Lodge Richmond Park 5 May 1867. Transcription of Birch's letter to Owen dated from British Museum London 9 July 1860. An interesting item in the field of Victorian Egyptology. The subject is what Owen describes here as 'one of the oldest Statues of an Egyptian Notable in the British Museum'. Its current Museum Number is EA103 and it has been in the Museum since 1835 but the details of its acquisition are unclear. In his translation Birch calls the sitter 'the Royal Scribe Amenhelp' but the current BM description begins: 'Scribal statue of Amenhotep son of Hapu: of black grano-diorite. Hieroglyphic texts are inscribed on the papyrus unrolled on his lap and on the statue plinth. His right hand now broken held a pen as if writing while his left hand holds the papyrus roll. .' At the time of writing Owen and Birch were colleagues at the British Museum Owen as Superintendent of the Natural History Department and Birch as head the Egyptian and Assyrian branch see the entries on both men in the Oxford DNB. The recipient of Owen's covering letter to Birch's translation is Lady Ann Cullum 1807-1875 widow of Sir Thomas Gery Cullum 1777-1855 of Hardwick House. As a palaeontologist Owen opposed Darwin's theory of evolution with a biblical view of creation and his interest in Ancient Egypt bound up with his Christian beliefs is apparent in the letter in an elegant assessment of the significance of the statue and in his annotation of Birch's translation. The letter and translation are on four 4to pages of the same paper. In good condition with light signs of age and wear. The letter is on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium and the first page of the translation on the recto of the second leaf but they have now been inverted by folding with the two leaves carrying the other two pages of the translation tipped-in at the front resulting in the material being presented in reverse order. ONE: Covering Autograph Letter Signed from Owen to Lady Cullum with good firm signature addressed from 'Sheen Lodge Richmond Park 5th May 1867.' 1p 4to. The letter reads: 'Dear Lady Cullum I have the pleasure to send agreeably with my promise a copy of the Translation of the hyeroglyphic sic Inscription on one of the oldest Statues of an Egyptian Notable in the British Museum. It affords a suggestive insight into a social position of one of the earliest historical civilized & organized Communities. The date is probably anterior to that which may be assigned to the visit of Abram to Egypt. Gen. XII. Retaining a lively recollection of the pleasure of the day spent at Hardwick I remain Your Ladyship's very truly Richard Owen.' TWO: Manuscript translation described in Owen's letter. 3pp 4to. Written out in an unknown hand with the first of the five sections titled: 'Translation of the Inscription on the Garment and Papyrus which he is unrolling.' The other four sections of the translation are: 'Inscription In Front of the base' 'Running to the left of the figure' 'right Side' and 'Left side'. At the head of the first page in Owen's autograph: 'Hyeroglyphics sic on the Statue of the Seated Royal Scribe “Amenhelp†in the British Museum.' On the third page at the end of the translation and in the same unknown hand is written out a 'Copy of letter from Samuel Birch Esqre: F.S.A. &c. Keeper of Antiquities in the British Museum enclosing the above Translation to Professor Owen: -'. Birch's letter is dated from the British Museum 9 July 1860. It reads: 'My dear Professor Enclosed is the Translation of the Inscriptions on the Granite Statue of the Seated Scribe. It Consists of the Dedication of the Statue to the Royal Scribe Amenhelp and of his prayers to the God Amen-Ra – the Theban Jupiter. Believe me Yours very truly signed Samuel Birch'. The translation carries tem marginal annotations in Owen's autograph indicating an interest in and knowledge of the subject. The two of Owen's annotations read: 'His territorial Title: Baron Shamer like all the Nobility of Egypt was a priest: the condition is now parallel'd at the Court of Rome.' and 'the Upper & Lower Provinces of Egypt paralleling the Heavens & the Earth.' An interesting item casting light on the way business was conducted in the world of nineteenth-century newspaper proprietorship. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. The recipient evidently a fellow newspaper proprietor is not named and the letter is signed ‘William Ingram’. Begins: ‘My dear Sir / I have talked over the matter of purchase of your papers with my brother and he is of the opinion that our deal ought to include the 3d gardener’s paper as the two have always been worked together - he thinks ten years purchase less 10% would be a fair price - the 10% would cover all commission and cost of audit examination etc - this would give you a clear 9 years’ purchase’. In Ingram’s opinion the recipient ‘would do well to realise as in these days of never ending competition the older one gets the more difficult it is to tackle the worry of these incessant attacks’. Prominent fold-lines in both directions middle and towards the top of the vertical fold there is a small patch of discoloration around the seam. Not a single nick or tear to the edges. Since the establishment of Indian and other federal reservations two separate systems of water rights have emerged in the water-scarce West. These two systems one federal and the other state have resulted in water rights disputes leading to lengthy and expensive litigation. This manual the result of a comprehensive study by the Conference of Western Attorneys General attempts to make it easier to achieve negotiated settlements as an alternative to litigation. The Reserved Water Rights Settlement Manual begins by outlining the history of these two systems. The federal system of reserved water rights was created by the courts to protect water rights on federal reservations. Conflicts develop because federal reserved water rights do not depend on continuous use and it is not clear how much water is reserved for each reservation until the courts clarify the scope of the right. Under the state system however water is quantified based on continuous use; state rights can be affected if all federal reserved rights are put to actual use. The study compiles recent experience in settlement efforts between tribal state and federal governments. It provides each party with the information they should have in an effort to assist the settlement process.
