Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1968. An extraordinary collection of ephemera from the 1968 film the centerpiece of which is a large piece of original artwork by production designer Alexander Trauner. Also included are a US one sheet poster US half sheet poster US insert poster US pressbook Australian daybill poster with the alternate title "Up Tight" and a German A1 poster with the alternate title "Black Power". <br/><br/>An overlooked and exceedingly important African-American film the first film to deal with contemporary black revolutionaries who rose in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Today the film is considered a work that seeded the explosion of blaxploitation films in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. The story's events surround the death of Martin Luther King framed as a remake of "The Informer" John Ford in turn based on the 1925 proletarian novel by Liam O'Flaherty. <br/><br/>Shot on location in Cleveland the first US film for noted director Dassin who had left the US at the height of the McCarthy hearings in nearly two decades. <br/><br/>The scenario drawing depicts a meeting of black revolutionaries at their headquarters in an abandoned Cleveland bowling alley after the death of Martin Luther King and following a gun heist and murder. Signed in the lower right corner with the designer's Hungarian birth surname "Trau." Executed in gouache ink watercolor pen and pencil. <br/><br/>Seen by very few upon its release UPTIGHT was restored and released on blu-ray in 2014 by the curated label Olive Films. Addressed to 'Dr. Maurice Ernest New Court Esher Surrey.' He apologises for having been unable to read his book adding: 'I am afraid I cannot feel that your main thesis is biologically justified'. It is obvious why Huxley did not look beyond the title as the book he is clearly referring to is Ernest's 'Lives of 300 years and continual rejuvenation' 1942. A collection of the papers of the Austrian-born biologist Maurice Ernest 1872-1955 is in the University of Chicago Library. In addition to longevity Ernest's interests included homeopathy: his 'Everyday Chronic Maladies' went through numerous editions. 15 March 1941. From the archives of Maurice Bessy 1910-1993 a French film historian novelist and screenwriter "Deadlier Than the Male" 1956 and a handful of films 1939-1950. Bessy's rubber stamp and name label on the verso of one still with brief annotations in holograph ink on the versos of both stills. <br/><br/>Featured in one still is director Duvivier and actor Sergio Fantoni both engaging in what appears to be a spirited conversation. In the next still Duvivier shoots a bandaged Delon in his hospital bed surrounded by members of the crew. <br/><br/>Based on the 1962 book "Manie de la persecution" by Louis C. Thomas. After a near fatal car crash resulting in a coma Pierre Delon awakens to a new life.
