Inside covers with three color advertisements.<br /> <br /> A musical and dramatic spectacle portraying the highlights of four thousand years of Jewish history presented at the Convention Hall in Philadelphia. An event conceived as a means of symbolizing and representing the ideals and history of the Jewish people. The production originally planned as the Jewish Day July 3 1933 at the "Century of Progress Exposition at Chicago." The supporting cast presumably recruited locally from city to city numbered many hundreds.<br /> <br /> At this and a subsequent performance the pageant was seen by more than 20000 people and won the unanimous praise of critics and public. On September 24 1933 it was presented in New York City and ran for twenty-one performances which were visited by more than 400000 people.<br /> <br /> Although "The Romance of a People" was produced for its artistic appeal the sponsor and the beneficiary of the enterprise is the American Palestine Campaign which is engaged in the effort to raise funds for the settlement of German Jewish refugees in Palestine. <br /> <br /> With contributions on Jewish History a synopsis of the pageant-drama "The Romance of a People" the musical background of the pageant the principals of cast an extensive list of the committee of sponsors with a message from President Franklin D. Roosevelt and a contribution by Louis Lipsky National Chairman of the American Palestine Campaign on Palestine Land of "Promise and Fulfillment."<br /> <br /> Illustrated with an artistic depiction of Moses sepia-toned photos of the principals of the cast a drawing of President Roosevelt and numerous illustrated advertisements including inside and back covers. Le Guide de la femme Collection of five French women's culture magazines
Paris: Migra 1962. Five issues of "Le Guide de la femme" roughly "Woman's Guide" a mid-century Parisian periodical published with the patronage of French author journalist politician and noted feminist Louise Weiss. The periodical not unlike similar publications of today found on wire racks at grocery checkout lines was produced by and for France's modern Woman "at the forefront of feminine progress" with articles on fashion entertainment leisure activities cosmetology film/television music astrology and an emphasis on hairstyles. Housed in a large mailing envelope addressed to Maryse Martres at Cinedis. <br/><br/>Weiss 1893-1983 grew up wealthy in Alsace her father an engineer and her Jewish mother was a member of the prolific Javal family. After training as a secondary school teacher much to the chagrin of her parents she received a degree from Oxford University published the scarce "L'Europe nouvelle" subsequently committing herself to women's suffrage between the World Wars. Her works as a feminist was seen on a mass scale in the form of various periodicals "Le Guide de la Femme" arguably the freshest and most forward in production design and output advocating for strong women in public and private life. She also participated in campaigns for women's right to vote in France organized suffragette events like chaining herself to a street light in Paris. Always a prominent voice Weiss became a Member of the European Parliament MEP its oldest member until her death at age 90. Weiss even has streets and schools named in her honor in France. <br/><br/>Little is documented on "Le Guide de la femme" and few if any are held by institutions and libraries. Photography by the likes of J. Stara of Kraftwerk notoriety Mario Leonardo and Jose Arturo played a major role in the advertising and full-page glamour photographs throughout the periodical as did fashion and beauty advertisements short stories and brief notes on contemporary film by Jany Casanova. Fantastic in aim and appearance. <br/><br/>Included are issues for December 1959 Miss France 1959 cover photo May 1960 Japanese Mlle. Togo cover photo interview December 1960 Farah Diba cover photo February 1962 Transat cover photo May 1962 Michele Wargnier cover photo. <br/><br/>All issues saddle-stapled in monochrome photo-illustrated wrappers high-quality stock 32 pages later issues 24 pages. Brussels: Royal Films Societe Anonyme 1952. Six panel gatefold. Quarto. Pictorial self wrappers. Illustrated with stills. Light use at edges pencil erasure from one corner of upper panel otherwise very good or better. A souvenir program for the Belgian release of Welles's film adaptation of OTHELLO. Finally produced under the auspices of Mercury Productions Inc. and Les Films Marceau it first started filming in 1949. After several financial mishaps it saw first release at Cannes in May of 1952 with distribution in Europe thereafter. It did not see general distribution in the US until Sept. 1955 and then in a revised edit. Besides Orson Welles the cast consisted of Micheál MacLiammóir as Iago Robert Coote as Roderigo Suzanne Cloutier as Desdemona Michael Laurence as Cassio Fay Compton as Emilia and Doris Dowling as Bianca. Their relationship is described in greater depth in Herzog's 1999 documentary "My Best Fiend" which allows a glimpse into their tortured yet fruitful creative partnership. <br/><br/>Herzog's 1979 film was not so much a remake as a tribute to the 1922 original which he lauded as the greatest picture Germany every produced. George Raft rises from coal mine laborer to be a top dancer in pre-Great War Europe. While weaving his way through romantic entanglements including a fling with Sally Rand who performs her famous fan dance here he secures his own nightclub at which point he meets the real love of his life Carole Lombard after asking her to audition in her underwear in his hotel room. A pre-Code gem that seems almost to have been designed to push the censors buttons simultaneously one of the raciest and moodiest "A" musicals produced by this studio. <br/><br/>Tall self-wrappers as issued stamped FILE COPY and RETURN TO SCRIPT DEPT. / PARAMOUNT PICTURES INC. on the front wrapper rubber-stamped production No. 171 and dated November 8 1933. Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1932. First Draft script for the 1932 pre-Code film though it is what would later be known as a revised shooting script as it was a rewrite issued during shooting. <br/><br/>AFI Catalog provides some context around the October 20 1932 date on the script revealing a somewhat troubled production that resulted in a fine film: "On 23 Sep 1932 HR announced that the script was being rewritten. According to a HR news item on 4 Oct 1932 Lowell Sherman walked off the set after a pay dispute and was replaced by Wesley Ruggles. Hopkins quit the production in early Nov 1932 claiming the role was not suitable for her. Gable was on loan from M-G-M for this film. Gable and Lombard were married in 1939. This was their only co-starring film."<br/> <br/>Based on the best selling novel "No Bed of Her Own" by Val Lewton. Gable plays a card cheat who has to go on the lam to avoid a pesky cop. While hiding out he meets lonely but somewhat wild librarian Lombard. The two get married after Lombard wins a coin flip and they move back to the city where Gable continues his grifting ways unbeknownst to his new wife. <br/><br/>Salmon self wrappers rubber-stamped copy No. 1278 and MASTER FILE dated October 20 1932 with credits for story writers Goulding and Glazer screenwriter Watkins and continuity writer Anges Brand Leahy. "Dr. Joe" Rorke as he was affectionately known died at his home at Taliesin West in Scottsdale Ariz. After graduating from Princeton he attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine earning his medical degree in 1943. He served in the Navy as a lieutenant junior grade in the medical corps. Dr. Joe met architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956 became his personal physician and attended the residential community of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. In the late 1950s he became the first physician to open a private medical practice in Scottsdale. From 1985 to his death Dr. Joe served his community by publishing a weekly newsletter called The Whirling Arrow which served as a comprehensive chronicle of current and historical Frank Floyd Wright Foundation events and stories providing a prime showcase for his sparkling wit and deep intellect. Cornelia Brierly 1913-2012 was an American architect and one of the first five women to study architecture at Carnegie Tech. She was the first female fellow of Frank Lloyd Wright in Taliesin 1934.<br /> Cornelia Brierly was born April 12 1913 in Mifflin County Pennsylvania. She studied briefly at Cornell University and the University of Pittsburgh before enrolling in Carnegie Tech becoming one of the first five women to study architecture in the program. In 1934 she joined the Taliesin Fellowship under Frank Lloyd Wright. She worked on Wright's Broadacre City plan building models in Arizona and traveling to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. to explain the ideas to a wider audience. She studied with Wright for 10 years before starting a private practice with her husband Peter Berndtson. In 1956 she returned to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation working as an architectural designer interior decorator and landscape architect. A poster for a local theater revival of Claire Booth Luce's 1936 play The Women directed by the noted photographer Cole Weston the son of Edward Weston. <br /> <br /> Weston in addition to taking his own photographs and printing from his father's negatives worked with the Forest Theater Guild in Carmel on the California coast for many years directing plays. The Forest Theater operated from the turn of the century until the 1950s and was revived in the early 1970s. This poster seems to date from the original run. <br /> <br /> Poster. 14 by 22 inches. Printed in black on tan with highlights in yellow paint. Dating from either 1952 or 1958 based on the years when September 12 was a Friday. Ticket prices in the early 1950s were typically $1 to $2 at the Forest Theater which most likely places this poster in 1952. A near fine copy. Lower corners are creased.
