Produced by Springbok Films and distributed by Associated British-Pathe the script records scene-by-scene dialogue across twelve reels spanning more than 10000 feet of film. The script would have been used in post-production to ensure synchronization and subtitling accuracy.</p> <p>The Pinter-Losey collaboration is considered a landmark of British New Wave cinema noted for its claustrophobic depiction of class manipulation and psychological power games. The film marked the first of three major collaborations between Losey and Pinter followed by Accident and The Go-Between.</p> unknown

Rare.<br /> <br /> An iteration of an explicit short story penned by an anonymous author sometime before or during World War II circulated underground in retyped typescript or carbon typescript copies during the 1940s and after.<br /> <br /> "Behind the Green Door" is notable as one of of the first American hardcore pictures to receive widespread distribution in the US and one of the first heterosexual pornographic films to feature an interracial sex scene. A breakthrough role for actress Marilyn Chambers who would go on to become one of the first icons in the adult film industry and even worked briefly in mainstream cinema. <br /> <br /> Eleven leaves last page of text not numbered. Laid in is a Call Sheet from the production dated Tuesday November 29 1966. <br /> <br /> Based on John Ball's 1965 novel. An African American police detective from Philadelphia is recruited to help solve a murder in a small bigoted Mississippi town. Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rod Steiger nominated for two others. After the success of the film version the characters were developed further for a police procedural television series in 1988 developed by James Lee Barrett and starring Carroll O'Connor and Howard Rollins which aired on NBC then CBS from 1988 to 1995.<br /> <br /> Set in the fictional town of Sparta Mississippi and shot largely on location in Illinois. Poitier insisted the movie be filmed in the North because of a 1964 incident in Mississippi in which he and Harry Belafonte had been run off the road and almost killed by Klansmen while in the state to support the SNCC Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.<br /> <br /> Goldenrod titled wrappers noted as REVISED FIRST DRAFT on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 84 dated July 1 1966. Washington DC: Howard University 1947. Vintage program for the 1947 production of the 1944 play held from December 9-12 1947 at Howard University's Spaulding Hall under the direction of James W. Butcher Jr. The production marked the first time the play had been performed by an all-Black cast.<br /> <br /> Produced less than two years after the 1945 Broadway premiere of Tennessee Williams' breakthrough play director Butcher remained faithful to Williams' text for Howard University's Black acting troupe The Howard Players and the performances' predominately Black audience and was widely lauded by local critics with the Washington Afro-American declaring the production "a must on the local theatregoers' calendar" and the Washington Evening Star acknowledging Butcher's "bravery" in producing an entirely Black production of Williams' play.<br /> <br /> Among The Howard Players acting in the production were very early performances by noted actor Graham Brown later of the Negro Ensemble Company in New York here using his birth name Robert Brown who played the angry and socially conscious Tom Wingfield and noted actor playwright and groundbreaking theatre director Shauneille Perry who played the crippled and psychologically fragile Laura Wingfield.<br /> <br /> 6.5 x 9.25 inches Bi-fold. The 1962 model year was a decided disaster for the Dodge Division primarily because the company Vice President in charge of development mistakenly decided to shrink all of the Dodge models in order to better compete with the Chevrolet Chevy II and the Rambler models. The 1962 models were placed on reduced wheel bases and the cost cutting measures only added to the size of the disaster. This Promotional kit includes photos of all the models released that year as well as a number of storyboard photo series featuring maintenance and fueling of the autos changing flat tires policemen in Dodge police cars tracking down and stopping suspects Dodge ambulances traveling and staying at the Howard Johnson. In addition there is included a substantial section of photographs devoted to the Dodge Trucks and heavy Trucks as well as commercial panel vans and delivery vans released in 1962. A wonderful original ballet director’s art direction notebook for the Peter Pan ballet staged in 1984 intended to offer young up-and-coming ballet students at the time to experience live performances and to unify Eastside/Westside Royal Academy of Dancing trained students. It would be 5 years before the Oregon Ballet and Pacific Ballet Theater would consolidate under the direction of James Canfield to form the Oregon Ballet Theatre. This ballet featured four acts divided into The Nursery Neverland Ship of the Pirates and Conclusion featuring solos by Wendy Tinker Bell Peter and Captain Hook over the length of the production. Dancers 4-5 years old were featured as the Neverland Fairies 5-7 years old with 2 years of training and pre-primary Royal Academy examinations behind them played Forest Fairies; Lost Children were 6-9 years old and had performed Barre and footwork; followed by the Pirates and soloists including Wendy Heather Miller Peter Pan Laura Spradlin Captain Hook Elizabeth Johnson and the mermaids drawn from the Lake Oswego School of Ballet under the directorship of Christine Donald. The original score by Anita Perry b. 1960 an up-and-coming Canadian composer out of British Columbia where she had studied piano with Lee Kum Sing and composition with Cortland Hultberg. In her early 20’s M. Perry had already won several composition awards was known for her original ballet works and wrote this score with orchestration for a variety of instruments “lending to the performance. . . a more closely approximated real environment experienced by professional dancers.†Peter Pan as a ballet required a fair amount of athleticism and as indicated here in Higgins’s artistic director’s notebook required extensive choreography changes scene adjustments and revisions by M. Perry. Higgins studied and danced at the British Royal Ballet later with Elvie DeMarko 1924-1989 of Ballet Russe and then with Robert Barnett of the Atlanta Ballet. No similar notebooks or programs survive for this 1984 ballet and there are no recordings or printed musical scores this cataloguer could uncover. Center fold line and lighter vertical crease; light foxing to outer pages; several nicks and occasional minor loss to margins; long tear to head of last leaf progressively shorter in successive leaves; few other tears minimally affecting text on last page; some splitting to folds. Large promotional newspaper/program for this travelling German circus in Italy only from 1931-32. The circus featured "la sua grandiosa pantomima acqua" a grand water pantomime in which the ring was flooded with 500000 litres of water with fountains "whose splashes touch the top of the tent jets of water illuminated by reflectors with the force of 2000000 candles luminous waterfalls a thousand water games complete with the entire artistic staff with actors singers and international dance beauties" our translation."In the late 1920s Jakob Busch made his mark as one of the first circus directors to adapt water spectaculars popularized by Paula Busch in her Berlin circus to an itinerant big top and to bring to his traveling show under the artistic direction of Alfred Delbosq the hitherto purely urban concept of the revuereplete with chorus line singers and theatrical tableaux. Using equipment especially designed for his traveling circus Jakob Busch dedicated the full second half of his shows to carefully dramatized water pantomimes for which the ring was completely flooded. Their themes ranged from oriental tales to Venetian feasts and even to an elaborate six-part spy story From the Equator to the Pole which included all sorts of exotic animals and a polar tableau with penguins sea lions and a couple of ice skaters. . Gannon 1885-1969 was an Irish-American housewife who shaped the Bureau into a powerful agency during the aftermath of the Great Depression in monitoring the food supply into New York City and shaping demand by daily radio announcements and advisories to housewives and domestics. A captivating group of commercial studio photographs of the performers performances and costumes at the Hollywood College of Music Dancing and Fine Arts in Portland Oregon as the Jazz Age descended into the Great Depression. The performers of the “Baby Vanities†and “Kiddie Revue†range in age from 6 & 7 to teenage years including both girls and boys.

Oblong 4to. 24 original photographs all preserved in archival mylar sleeves sized 6.25 x 7 in. up to 8 x 10 in. some w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative others w/ manuscript captions added a few w/ annotations and/or photographer’s instructions on versos all with bright strong contrast a few w/ offsetting from previous mounting on versos and one w/ very small pinholes at corners from prior mounting. Recent cloth binder stamping front cover excellent grouping. These photographs vividly document the dance and music studio operated by Annabelle Knowles reflecting the fast evolving costumes and aesthetics of the twilight of the Roaring 20’s as the U.S. descended into the Great Depression. These photos also clearly reflect the influence of Gus Edwards 1879-1945 vaudeville’s premier producer of kiddie acts and who had produced and released the shorts “Kiddie Revue†in 1930 and 1931. His influence was not only driven by his songs “By the Light of the Silvery Moon & “School Days†but also discovering such stars as Groucho Marx Eddie Cantor Mae Murray Sally Rand and many others. The images depict girls in two-piece outfits in front of Art Deco staging for “Body and Soulâ€; bare-backed girls in Flapper Era inspired costumes for chorus line “Kiddie Revueâ€; song and dance routines featuring Ronald Chetwood in top hat with Marcile Shillito Virginia Collins and chorus line in Jazz Age era costumes and canes; and several show Barbara Jane Wicks Shirley Jay Mulkey and Sunny Dentler in Spanish inspired costumes for “Baby Vanities.†Another shows adolescent boy and girl dance team in an “Apache†dance inspired costume number. The Hollywood College of Music Dance & Fine Arts offered classes and instruction in all ages with the last few photos showing teenage girls in chorus line with short hair coquettish expressions and teamwork or chorus line numbers. Annabelle Knowles 1900-1989 was a musician and dancer who founded the Hollywood College of Music Dancing & FIne Arts at 4112 NE Sandy Blvd. some time in the late 1920’s. Most of the street directory references focus on 1929-1932 and her British-America theatre-director husband at the time Vincent Knowles 1883-1944 worked at the studio as well. Baker 1882-1972 was a longtime commercial studio photographer in Portland OR who had initially begun as a photographer with noted tourist travel guide Howard Eaton photographing tours through National Pakrs. Beem 1892-1984 was founder and photographer at Granada Studio located in the 1930’s at 515 Swetland Building in Portland. Centlivere 1878-1964 owned and operated La Vere Photo Shoppe and Photo Craft Studios on Sandy Blvd. in Portland for nearly all of his career. We could find no similar collections or photographs or even references to Annabelle Knowles and very few examples of any of these three photography studios in institutional holdings. Other key titles in the collection include "Anatomy of a Murder" "Bonjour Tristesse" "Exodus" and "The Man with the Golden Arm."<br /> <br /> For most of the pressbooks in this collection we have never seen another example. James Cowan Smith 1843-1919 was a British civil engineer director of a railway company British Wagon and philanthropist. In his will he bequeathed what would now amount to roughly $4284000 to the National Gallery of Scotland to be used to expand its collection. The one stipulation was that the portrait of his dog Callum by John Emms was to be on permanent display in the museum. Original buff printed wrappers browned and with the bottom wrapper trimmed below the imprint possibly removing an inscription or mark of ownership.<br /> <br /> § Limited to 100 copies printed in San Francisco by Larry Jordan born 1934 the renowned California experimental filmmaker known for his use of animation. His most famous film was Our Lady of the Sphere which followed a boy a deep-sea diver and a mystical lady with an orbital head on a surrealist dream-like journey.<br /> <br /> Ivan the Terrible 1944 was a two-part biopic of Ivan IV of Russia starring Nikolay Cherkasov. It was Eisenstein's final film and was said to have been commissioned by Joseph Stalin who admired and identified with Ivan. Part 1 was released in 1944; Part 2 should have been released in 1946 however Stalin was so displeased by the depiction of Ivan that he banned the film and it did not appear until 1958 years after Stalin's death. Part I has the uncommon accolade of have been included in both The Fifty Worst Films of All Time by Medved and Lowell and Scheider's 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. This tribute by Larry Jordan is further testament to the film's cult status. unknown

Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1986. Archive of three title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1963 film. Also included are two fascinating autograph letters both elaborately designed and executed in a calligraphic style from Adler to author illustrator and editor Fridolf Johnson relating to Adler's work with Hitchcock. <br /> <br /> Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Birds" 1963 his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Justine" 1969. <br /> <br /> In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City. <br /> <br /> In the first letter dated May 16 1986 Adler describes after touching on other topics meeting Hitchcock and then presenting him with layout ideas for the titles. He then goes into detail regarding his answer to a question about the techniques of artist Eric Gill stating that Hitchcock "was amazed" by this answer and after that would "request 'to be sure to bring that nice young man along" meaning Adler whenever he had a job for Adler's firm. <br /> <br /> The second letter dated June 10th 1986 focuses almost exclusively on Adler's work on "The Birds" going into some detail regarding both the creative and technical processes of producing hand lettered titles for films. He also describes Hitchcock as "an unusual person to work with. He was a master at what he did knew what he wanted and smoked the finest cigars." He then concludes the letter with some brief remarks on how his approach to title lettering evolved over the course of his career. <br /> <br /> The letters themselves are works of art executed in a variety of inks in Adler's detailed penmanship with Johnson's name on each in particular receiving full calligraphic treatment. <br /> <br /> Also included are draft title cards for the film stylistically similar to each other but much different from the titles used in the finished film. Two of the cards are marked as "camera ready" in manuscript colored pencil with titles executed in white paint on black board. The third card photo stat on black paper which accompanied the June 10th letter has been annotated by Adler on both the recto and verso explaining the in more detail the technical process of putting the lettering on film. <br /> <br /> Overall a significant collection of material illuminating a little explored aspect of film design with a direct and significant connection to a seminal work by a director known for personally overseeing all aspects of production. <br /> <br /> Each letter 19 x 24 inches single leaf rectos only. Original black pebbled cloth spine stiffened w/ wood spacers covered in black cloth minor bowing to leaves very minor wear to corners front outer hinge just starting still a VG copy w/ pencil date of 1940 on front pastedown. First edition of this scarce and exceptional photographic sample catalogue filled with the styles of Needler chocolate box assortment and chocolate packaging in the first years of World War II. Initially chocolates had been packed as unwrapped bars in the Victorian era with paper labels displayed on the counter. Later gold printing and metal foils repeated the luxury message of chocolate. Inspired by the innovations of Cadbury the designs for many British fancy chocolate boxes were prized by the British as special gifts to be used as trinket or button boxes and even cut out and saved in scrapbooks. The chocolate boxes in this catalogue include mixed assortments in faux 3-drawer cabinets decorated with fancy ribbons chromolithograph and colour-printed covers featuring historic scenes pets flowersArt Deco designs gold foil and more. Of special interest are the wonderful Needler’s figurine bowls and boxes featuring porcelain figurines dressed in silk fabrics atop bowls or boxes as well as a splendid pair of porcelain bookends “Sweet & Twenty†to hold up the customer’s chocolate boxes. Needler’s began as Fred Needler Ltd. in 1902 when established in Hull by Fred Needler 1865-1932 who began as a confectioner’s assistant in the 1880s. The company was a pioneer in fair treatment of his workforce incorporated profit-sharing for the staff from the beginning and covered sick pay retirement benefits and even established holiday homes in British seaside resort towns. By 1940 the company was one of the largest businesses in Hull with over 2000 employees. The company continued to operate until acquired through multiple buyouts by several different corporations until the label was acquired by Ashbury Confectionary and the factory was closed in Hull in 2002. Contemporary half red morocco over beveled boards with gilt spine lettering raised bands and marbled endpapers. 29.5 x 23.5 cm. Ex-library with modest signs: faint impression of tiny removed call number at the base of the spine small discard stamp on the front endpaper and stamp of Franklin Public Library at base of the title and one other page. Else good plus. Moderate wear to the extremities front joint started at ends still quite sound. Several small stains on the rear cover. A little marginal damping to endpapers barely evident on the inner margin of the title page. FIRST EDITION. A report on the second of two special censuses of mental institutions in the United States the first having been conducted in 1904. Previously the Census Bureau had tracked rates of insanity among the general population only as part of the regular decennial censuses. The 1910 special census surveyed 366 institutions collectively holding 248560 inmates. Joseph A. Hill's report analyzes a multitude of demographics including sex age race literacy marital status state region urban vs. rural etc. Another factor considered was nativity. The inclusion of this question on the survey reflected in part contemporary nativist fears that immigrants were increasing the percentage of mentally ill in the United States although Hill's report refutes this supposition. Mary F. Griffin and Louis C. Taylor contribute a "Summary of Laws Relative to the Care of the Insane" pp. 64-105. The census of 1910 reflected a growing sophistication in analyzing statistical data. The claim that insanity was increasing rapidly Hill noted was dubious. A variety of determinants shaped the statistics of insanity he insisted including the growing practices of institutionalizing the insane; the increasing average length of life; new diagnostic methods in psychiatry leading to the detection of mental factors in physical cases; the establishment of dispensaries; provision for voluntary and emergency commitment; and better modes of transportation i.e. automobiles that made it possible to bring individuals in poor physical condition to mental hospitals. By correcting for the age distribution of the entire native and foreign-born population Hill also demonstrated that the allegation that immigrants had far higher rates of mental illness was in error. --Gerald N.
