One of the most successful adaptations of a Henry James work and a classic of literary horror films in which Deborah Kerr plays a governess who believes her two young wards are being possessed by spirits. Prior to Capote's involvement with the script the events occurring were presented as literally happening but Capote's edits introduce the possibility of plausible insanity in the case of the governess as an explanation though this is famously never clarified by the film's end.<br /> <br /> Capote worked on this script concurrently with "In Cold Blood" and even so is said to have turned it around in only eight weeks. The film utilized notably dramatic staging and editing and was also the first to use synthesized electronic sounds created by Daphne Oram. Written for the screen by Ray Bradbury based on his 1962 novel. <br/><br/>After a carnival comes to Green Town the good citizens are compelled to follow their deepest desires caught under the spell of the malevolent Mr. Dark Jonathan Pryce who can grant those desires on one condition: that the grantees will forever join his freak show. <br/><br/>In 1977 Bradbury sold the film rights to his novel to Paramount. He and director Jack Clayton whom Bradbury had previously worked with on Moby Dick produced a completed script. However production never began and the film was eventually put into turnaround. At the time Walt Disney Pictures was concentrating on films with more mature themes in an attempt to break free from their stereotype as an animation and family film studio. Mounted on art board as issued and used.<br /> <br /> Founded in 1951 by Beat poet Kabbalist and Lower East Side underground luminary Lionel Ziprin with his wife illustrator and dancer Joanne Ziprin Inkweed Studios was originally created to produce "studio cards"-greeting cards to rival the mass-produced cards produced by the Hallmark Company. While not financially successful Inkweed did produce many outstanding graphics such as the poster on offer here. The company also served as the launching pad for the graphic work of artists such as Harry Smith Jordan Belson Bruce Conner Barbara Remington and William Mohr. <br /> <br /> Jack Gelber's landmark play within a play observes a producer and writer attempting to stage a production using "real" heroin addicts largely jazz musicians waiting for their score interspersed with jazz music. Notable not only for its honest depiction of addiction the play also radically re-imagined the relationship between audience and actor with actors utilizing the theatre's aisles as performance areas an actor presented as an audience member and actors remaining in character and panhandling during intermission. A key play in the history of American jazz and an evocative portrait and product of the Beat era. Winner of three Obie Awards including Best New Play Best All-Around Production and Best Actor for Warren Finnerty.
