Paris: Cinedis 1959. Collection of 269 vintage black-and-white photographs for the 1959 French film. <br/><br/>The collection consists of two unique and complimentary pieces one being a film still keybook with 68 contact prints of small format negatives most with 12 images per print amounting to over 800 images captured. Nearly all images with series number bordering the image and credits at the top for photo laboratory Tele-Photo film studio Cinedis film title and photographer Rosselle housed in a 2-ring paper binder with original French titles. The other piece is nearly 170 smaller photographs elegantly presented mounted with cello tape on thick stock in a "Lavis aquarelle" brand spiral bound notebook with maroon faux leather front wrapper. Series numbers and small "x" annotations in holograph ink on the pages several with small white borders and several with series number on the verso in holograph pencil. Photos without borders also have series number at the edges etched in the original film negative before photo development as on the keybook prints. Nearly all photographs have numerical annotations in holograph pencil on the versos a few smaller photographs have rubber-stamps on the versos crediting Richard Pierre film titles director Bastia and costars Alfred Adam and Noel Roquevart. Also included are 27 loose photographs a few with rubber-stamps on the verso crediting starring actors and French film titles and a small press packet from Cinedis detailing film credits synopsis and star biographies. <br/><br/>Starring actors Richard and Pierre are amply represented in the collection and seen in nearly every image mostly in their official uniforms. Actress Zuber is equally present in striking high-contrast images cuddling bunnies fishing at a river and wielding a rifle. The notebook depicts images seen in the film while the keybook depicts on-the-set sequences test shots candid moments and images of the crew; the loose photos show both candid and action shots. <br/><br/>An expansive perspective of a little seen comedy about a gendarme who travels to a small town looking for a disappeared woman a town known for its distrust of police officers. Director Bastia was an assistant director in the 1940s and 1950s when he worked almost exclusively with director Jean Boyer until his debut with "Nous autres à Champignol" 1957 the first in this series involving gendarmes and Champignol followed by this film and finally "The Boss of Champignol" 1966. <br/><br/>Photographs in large quarto notebook 3.5 x 4.75 inches keybook contact prints 8.25 x 10.5 inches 2-hole punched several trimmed and loose photos range from 4.75 x 6.75 inches to 7 x 9.25 inches. Nearly all photographs are contact sheets with 34 color transparencies 24 are medium-format and 5 are mounted. Starring actors Fernandel and Gray comprise most of the collection and the contact sheets consist of candid images of Fernandel director Boyer noted director Christian-Jacques and Fernandel in various accouterments surrounded by female members of the cast. Only a few contact sheets have less than 12 numbered frames amounted to 146 images. Striking images of both Gray and Patrick are scattered throughout the transparencies. <br/><br/>Fernandel stars as a talentless actor who fails to find work and turns to imitating people he sees on the street a stunt that lands him in court where he finally has a chance to showcase his acting ability. Fernandel was France's leading funny man for decades and Gray would go on to her best-known role in Federico Fellini's masterpiece "La Dolce Vita" 1960. Liliane Patrick's debut film later credits include "Maxime" 1958 "Julie the Redhead" 1959 and "A fleur de peau" 1962. <br/><br/>Transparencies housed in original glassine and paper envelopes four with annotations in holograph ink. Two slips of paper one on Cinedis parchment noting various photo sizes and quantities in holograph ink and in French are included. Brief notation in holograph pencil on the verso of the 5 x 7 photograph. All housed in original French Kodak photo box French title label affixed to the lid with annotations in holograph ink. <br/><br/>Sizes range from 2.25 x 4.75 to 7 x 9.25 inches. In nearly all photos Fernandel is seen posing models dancing and generally being forthcoming while a in smaller photo two men are tailoring a woman's costume one of them smoking a cigarette. Eleven photos with numerical annotations on the versos in pencil one with "Le couturier de ces dames" in ditto mimeograph duplication. <br/><br/>Fernand Vignard Fernandel is a tailor who needs to create a lasting fashion line to save his business. He does but he also cavorts a little with the models Fabian and his wife Delair discovers his infidelity. The film spoofed the new haute couture that was thriving at the time with notable designers Yves Saint Laurent Pierre Cardin who worked on this film and Japanese native Hanae Mori yet to represent the "new look."<br/><br/>Fernandel was France's leading funny man for decades and Fabian has over 80 film credits including Louis Malle's "The Thief of Paris" 1967 and Luis Buñuel's "Belle de jour" 1967. <br/><br/>Shot on location in Val-de-Marne France. <br/><br/>5 x 7 inches small white borders one photo 3.25 x 4.25 inches. Nearly all feature starring actress Renaud in glamour poses some reclining some ascending a staircase in a shimmering paisley dress with matching high heels. Several candid photos feature racing drivers Harry Schell and Peter Collins director Jean Boyer and other members of the film crew. <br/><br/>Included in the archive are 12 black-and-white single-weight on-the-set photos with holograph annotations in ink on the versos and 28 images of Renaud in glamour poses: 6 double-weight full-color glamour portraits Gevaert paper rubber-stamped PHOTO COULEURS / HERDET PHOTO on the versos 2 full-color transparencies 20 smaller mounted full-color transparencies. Original photo envelopes also present. <br/><br/>Renaud who later became a prominent AIDS activist stars as a writer whose crime fiction entry attracts the attention of swindlers even as she joins a gang and becomes its leader. Little known film by Boyer whose credits include "Calais-Douvres" 1931 "End of the World" 1931 "Roses noires" 1935 "Serenade" 1940 and "One Does Not Die That Way" 1946. <br/><br/>Cinedis was prominent during the French New Wave distributing and promoting some of the genre's greatest films including "Jules and Jim" "Le Trou" "The Gates of Paris" even the popular "Don Camillo" series starring Fernandel. <br/><br/>Photos range in size the smallest being 3.75 x 4.75 inches the largest being 6.75 x 9.25 inches; transparencies 4 x 4.75 inches mounted transparencies 2 x 2 inches in 9.5 x 12-inch black mounts 12 windows each 1 mount with only 8 transparencies present. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>A classic 1946 French romantic fantasy film adaptation of the traditional fairy tale of the same name written by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and published in 1757 as part of a fairy tale anthology "Le Magasin des Enfants ou Dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et ses eleves" London 1757. Directed by French poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau and starring Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais and the Beast. <br/><br/>The plot of Cocteau's film revolves around Belle's father who is sentenced to death for picking a rose from Beast's garden. Belle offers to go back to the Beast in her father's place. The Beast then falls in love with Belle and proposes marriage on a nightly basis though she refuses. Belle eventually becomes more drawn to Beast who tests her by letting her return home to her family and telling her that if she doesn't return to him within a week he will die of grief. <br/><br/>23 x 33 inches non-archivally mounted on board. Original black-and-white photographic lobby card from the 1960 film "Testament of Orpheus" Jean Cocteau's final work in the cinema. <br/><br/>The last film in Cocteau's "Orphic" trilogy following "The Blood of a Poet" 1930 and "Orphee" 1950. The only film in the trilogy featuring Cocteau himself as an aging poet who knows he is dying as indeed he was his greatest desire being to experience rebirth so that he can qualify for celestial immortality. <br/><br/>With cameos by Pablo Picasso Charles Aznavour bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguen and Yul Brynner. A few seconds of color are spliced in at one point a surreal effect used prior to this film in "Portrait of Jennie" 1948 and later in Samuel Fuller's "Shock Corridor" 1963. <br/><br/>Having run out of funds in mid-production Cocteau was given the prize money won by Francois Truffaut for "Les Quatre Cents Coups" in 1959 to complete filming. Truffaut the father of the French New Wave produced the film. <br/><br/>12 x 9.5 inches double weight. Near Fine.
