Dated Stuttgart April 6 1919 with unidentified signature. Some pencil notes on versos of some photographs e.g. "Wetterleuchten um Barbara" "zu hell kopiert" overexposed "Werner Klingler" "unscharf kopiert" copied blurred and "Heidemarie Stalheyer."<br /> <br /> Propaganda film depicting the struggle of Tyrol mountain farmers against the Austrian authorities leading up the annexation of Austria by the third Reich. Young Barbara and her husband Martin move onto the family farm in the mountains of Tyrol. While Barbara has to prevail despite the intrigues of her mother-in-law her husband and his friend Anton engage in the resistance against the Austrian army. A local commander of the Austrian army finds out about Martin's and his friend's activities prompting all of them to flee into the mountains. During the chase Anton is shot dead but the search company pursuing them is killed in an avalanche. A trial is staged accusing Anton of the murder of a militia man. Barbara falters under the pressure and admits the truth therefore the trial ends with the sentencing of her husband Martin. The insertion of NS symbolism into the movie towards the end of the film is done in a rather coarse way blatant and unsophisticated taking away from the suspense of the actual drama. Nevertheless after the invasion of the German troops Barbara and Martin are able to return to her family farm.<br /> <br /> Wetterleuchten um Barbara: Director Werner Klingler; screenplay by Harald G. Petersson and Hanns Saßmann based on Irmgard Wurmbrand's novel with the same title. Origins II is an example of a nationwide return to local history occasioned by the celebration of the Bicentennial. It includes articles written by a group of high school students who discovered for themselves the particular legends personalities and events which formed their neighborhoods in northwest Washington D.C. In the late 1880s then-Representative Francis G. Newlands of Nevada and his partners began to buy up farmland in northwest Washington D.C. and southern Montgomery County Maryland to develop a residential streetcar suburb. See Washington streetcars. They founded the Chevy Chase Land Company in 1890 and its eventual holdings are now known as this neighborhood and Chevy Chase Maryland. Chevy Chase D.C. was developed beginning in the early 1900s after construction was completed on the Chevy Chase Line a streetcar line stretching to and beyond the northwestern boundary of the District of Columbia thereby linking the area to downtown. Over succeeding decades the formerly remote area was transformed from farmland and woods to middle-class housing. Chevy Chase D.C. includes many "Sears Catalog Homes" a popular housing option in the early twentieth century that allowed individuals of modest means to order by mail the materials and instructions for a home and build it themselves. The neighborhood's major commercial road is Connecticut Avenue NW which in addition to commercial establishments is home to apartments a community center and a regional branch of the D.C. Public Library. Unlike many urban neighborhoods that have lost local businesses to large chains and suburban malls the small generally locally owned businesses along Connecticut Avenue remain and are well patronized by the local population. These businesses include Magruder's Supermarket established in 1875; and the Avalon Theatre which opened in 1923 as a silent film house and ran until the theater underwent renovations in 2003. The Avalon thereafter reopened as a non-profit movie theater. In addition to historical commercial buildings the area has multiple parks including Rock Creek Park Lafayette Park and Livingston Park. The book was one of three Mishima novels adapted by Paul Schrader for episodes in his film "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" 1985. <br /> <br /> Daiei released "Conflagration" "Enj " an adaptation of the same novel directed by Ichikawa Kon in 1958. The title and name of the temple in the film was changed from Kinkakuji after Buddhist opposition threatened problems with filming in Kyoto. Kyoto: Daiei Studios 1957. Draft script for the 1958 Japanese film. <br/><br/>Based on the 1956 novel "Kinkakuji" "Temple of the Golden Pavilion" by Yukio Mishima which is loosely based on the actual event of the burning of the Reliquary or Golden Pavilion of Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto by a young Buddhist acolyte in 1950. The book was one of three Mishima novels adapted by Paul Schrader for episodes in his film "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" 1985. <br/><br/>Daiei released "Conflagration" "Enj " an adaptation of the same novel directed by Ichikawa Kon in 1958. The title and name of the temple in the film was changed from Kinkakuji after Buddhist opposition threatened problems with filming in Kyoto. This is a script from that film before the name change. <br/><br/>Set and shot on location in Kyoto. <br/><br/>White titled wrappers rubber-stamped copy No. 12. Buenos Aires: Arte Madà 1955. Octavo 20.2 × 16.5 cm. Original pictorial wrappers with a reproduction of a photogram by Guillermo Adolfo Gutierrez; 138 pp. printed on brown wrapping paper and white art paper with numerous photographic portraits of the featured Madà members. Title page with handwritten dedication by Gyula Kosice to Manuel Ãlvarez 1923-2013 editor of the Argentinian art magazine "Arte Nuevo". Wrappers worn with front wrapper nearly detached; overall signs of wear; text toned; still about good. The movement made its first public appearance in the art world in 1944 with the journal "Arturo" which had its own unique program although only one issue was published. The central figures of this new movement in Latin America were Gyula Kosice 1924-1916 Carmelo Arden Quin 1913-2010 and Rhod Rothfuss 1920-1969. The group's declared aim was not only to overcome expressionist realistic and romantic formal languages but also in the spirit of Concrete Art to abandon any form of representation - the works should neither represent nor express anything. However the Argentinians broke new ground. Characteristic for them was of all things the negation of the rectangular frame which not only posed no problem for the continental representatives of this movement but also fitted in well with their program of mechanical standardization of art and everyday life. The rectangular frame was virtually pars pro toto for the striving for typification of individual elements in art. On this and the following: Perazzo Nelly and William Schwaller. "Arte MadÃ." They recognized in the right angles of the frame strips the art theory of the early modern period which defined the picture as "una finestra aperta" an open window. Rothfuss contrasted Leon Battista Alberti's "finestra aperta" with the "marco recortado" "structured frame" which was as it were nestled against the irregular polygonal and geometric compositions. The Argentinians were thus a decade ahead of the North American abstract artists. Moreover KoÅ¡ice was a pioneer in the use of new industrial materials such as Plexiglas and neon light.<br /> <br /> Following disagreements within the group surrounding the "Arturo" project part of the group split off and founded the "Asociación Arte Concreto - Invención" Association of Concrete Art and Invention. The remaining artists including Rothfuss KoÅ¡ice and the composer Estéban Eitler 1913-1960 adopted the name "MadÃ" a neologism similar to "Dada". Some believe it to be an abbreviation for "Movimiento de Arte de Invención". The group first became visible in Buenos Aires in June 1946 when they announced their solo exhibitions with programmatic flyers. The first large group exhibition with manifestos paintings sculptures poems and architectural models as well as music and dance performances took place just a few weeks later in August of the same year. As early as 1948 the group was also able to present itself to the European public at the "Salon des réalités nouvelles" in Paris after Arden Quin had emigrated to Paris. Even though Argentinian Concrete Art went its own way the movement was still linked to the continental avant-gardes. One of her comrades-in-arms for example was the photographer Grete Stern who had emigrated from Germany studied in Walter Peterhans' class in Dessau and Berlin on the recommendation of Otto Umbehr until the Bauhaus was closed and then founded the famous photo studio "ringl pit" with her fellow student Ellen Auerbach.<br /> <br /> However Argentinian Concrete Art was not only influenced by the European avant-gardes but also played a decisive role in shaping them. One of the initiators of "Arturo" and co-founder of the Madà counter-project "Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención" the painter and designer Tomás Maldonado 1922-2018 was appointed by Max Bill to the "Ulmer Hochschule für Gestaltung" which inherited the Bauhaus and was ultimately its rector. In Ulm he belonged to a group such as Otl Aicher who called for a closer connection between design science and technology. After his time in Ulm he worked for the pioneering company "Olivetti" where he designed icons for data processing. Today he is considered a key and leading figure of design culture in Italy. The objective for this presentation is to Obtain grants of monies to recreate a Fraser Memorial Studio to restore and preserve the original model of "End Of The Trail" as a National Monument. On the title page the 1968 date has the 8 crossed out a 9 penciled-in several penciled additions corrections and notations have been made throughout the latter portion of the text. Moderate wear edges toned."The film’s title as noted in the picture comes from the Biblical passage of Proverbs 11:29: “He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind.†Although the picture was copyrighted twice by Lomitas Productions Inc. the first copyright dated 2 Sep 1960 under number LP17779 lists the production company as Lomitas Productions Germany and was for a 16mm version. This version was probably shown at the film's premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on 25 Jun 1960. The second copyright also held by Lomitas Productions Inc. and for a 35mm version was registerd on 12 Nov 1960 under number LP17367 and the company is listed by the copyright records only as Lomitas Productions. .Director Stanley Kramer stated in a Nov 1959 NYT article that he considered Inherit the Wind the third in his trilogy of socially provocative films beginning with The Defiant Ones 1958 see above and On the Beach 1959 see below. The film is based on the play Inherit the Wind which was inspired by the 1925 “Scopes Monkey Trial†in Dayton TN. During that trial then dubbed “The Trial of the Century†Chicago labor lawyer Clarence Darrow 1857—1938 defended teacher John T. Scopes 1900—1970. Scopes was accused of propounding Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in defiance of Tennessee’s Butler Law which prohibited the teaching of any theory other than creationism. The prosecution was led by fundamentalist politician William Jennings Bryan 1860—1925 who was known as “The Great Commoner.†Bryan ran for United States President three times in 1896 1900 and 1908 and served as Secretary of State from 1913--1915. Unlike as depicted in the film Bryan died not on the day the trial ended but five days later of complications from diabetes. Another famous figure represented in the play and film versions of the story was H. L. Mencken 1880—1956 a journalist celebrated for his clever wit and iconoclastic liberalism. In the play and film the names of the major characters are changed from Clarence Darrow to Henry Drummond; William Jennings Bryan to Matthew Harrison Brady; H. L. Mencken to E. K. Hornbeck; and John T. Scopes to Bertram T. Cates. Although the film’s version of the trial hewed closely to actual events in other areas many facts were changed. For example unlike in the film the real trial was initiated by the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU which considered the Butler Law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in Tennessee classrooms unconstitutional. When Dayton resident George W. Rappelyea learned of the ACLU’s desire to test the law he convinced Scopes who rarely even taught evolution to join the case. According to modern sources because the theory of evolution was included in the state’s textbook many Tennessee teachers included it in the curriculum. Also in contrast to the film according to some historians Darrow wanted Scopes to be found guilty so he could appeal the decision to a higher court. Hollywood: United Artists, 1960 unknown
