BASKERVILLE, John - BIBLE; English; Authorized version
The Holy Bible
Cambridge: printed by John Baskerville 1763. An outstanding synthesis of fine printing illustration and binding First Baskerville edition: a spectacular copy of one of the greatest English Bibles and a crowning achievement of English printing in a magnificent Staggemeier and Welcher binding and abundantly extra-illustrated with 287 Old Master engravings. The copy adorned two of the greatest book collections of the last two centuries: the library of the Dukes of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace and of Estelle Doheny in California. Friedrich Leberecht Staggemeier 1759-1827 was esteemed for his elaborately decorated neoclassical bindings. He partnered with Samuel Welcher from 1799 to 1810 and the pair catered to the highest echelons of the market. Extra-illustration was a distinguishing feature of this market: here 171 of the illustrations are from Bernard Picart and Gerard Hoet's Figures de la Bible The Hague 1728 and 58 are from Pierre Mortier's Bible Amsterdam and Antwerp 1700 while others are from Jan Luyken's Icones Biblica Veteris et N. Testamenti Amsterdam 1729 and other sources. The extravagant binding and extra-illustration were commissioned by the first owner the collector and scholar Jacob Bryant. In 1804 he bequeathed the Bible to his patron George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough. It remained in the duke's collection at Blenheim Palace until 1881 when it passed to Fanny Octavia Louisa daughter of the 7th duke. Her descendants sold the book and it passed via Dawson's Book Shop to Estelle Doheny one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century where it joined her Gutenberg Bible and other landmarks of printing history. She bequeathed it to St. John's Seminary which sold it and the rest of Doheny's collection in 1988 where it realized $11000. Bound in 2 vols large folio 518 x 343 mm pp. 1146. Extra-illustrated with 287 Old Master engravings of which 198 are single page and 84 double each mounted mostly within a black ink and pale yellow wash frame. Late 18th- or early 19th-century red straight-grain morocco by L. Staggemeier & Welcher of London binder's ticket green morocco labels richly gilt in compartments wide gilt borders to covers gilt Greek-key turn-ins green watered-silk linings with gilt grapevine borders all edges gilt. Joints and extremities restored scattered light offsetting from plates and foxing else contents fresh very minor worming to front endpapers of first volume: a beautiful copy. Paris Chez J. Klostermann fils 1811-12. Bound in 6 contemp. hcalf. Gilt spines slightly rubbed. Wear to top of spines. In: "Annales de Chimie ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 78 79 80 81 82 and 83. Entire volumes offered. Tome 83: pp. 5-35 a. pp. 117-127. With in all 3 engraved plates. Some scattered brownspots.

The papers represents one of the first announcements of Berzelius' discovery of the fixed chemical proportions determining the weights and valencies of the various constituent elements in inorganic compounds. The papers were published at the same time in Swedish German both here in Annalen and in Schweiger's Journal and in French. By running many hundreds of analysis of chemical compounds he gave so many examples of the law of definite proportions that the world of chemistry could no longer doubt its validity and in so doing he gave experimental evidence to the atomic theory. He hereby laid a solid fundation for the further development of chemistry. A reprint is found in Ostwald's Klassiker der exakten Wissenschaften No. 35.According to Söderbaum Jac. Berzelius 2 p.12 "It was a giant work one of the most importent in the history of chemistry which was here presented. One is even more impressed when one remembers that it was a pioneer undertaking in every sense of the term. Analytic and synthetic methods existed before Berzelius' time to be sure but there were no precise methods of the sort which he required. They all had to be elaborated at the cost of time and labour."J. Erik Jorpes "Jac. Berzelius" p.45."In general Berzelius's efforts were directed toward the consolidation and extension of the atomic theory. He improved chemical analysis and determined the composition of a large number of compounds thus verifying the laws of constant and multiple proportions and furnishing the most accurate equivalent weights then available. By ingenious methods he arrived at the correct atomic composition of most common substances and thus was enabled to draw up in 1826 a table of atomic weights very nearly identical with the modern one."Leicester & Klicktein "A Source Book in Chemistry" p. 258.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1810-20 C. unknown

258.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1810-20 C. unknown

BIBLE
The English Version of the Polyglot Bible containing the Old and New Testaments. [With Cruden's Concordance and Four Thousand Short Scripture Questions with Answers]. AGSTER'S TEACHER'S BIBLE: LARGE EDITION IN PUBLISHER'S ROAN PORTFOLIO
8vo., on India paper, with 9 coloured engraved maps on 6 and a double-page chronological chart; attractively bound in publisher's black roan portfolio with drop sides all round, covers framed and blocked in blind and blocked and lettered in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt 'Bagster's Teacher's Bible', gilt edges, black endpapers, portfolio mildly scuffed and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Bagster's Teacher's Bible is a facsimile reprint, with larger types, of the English Version of Bagster's Polyglot Bible first published in 1817 and which made Bagster's name. It corresponds page for page, and line for line, with the two well-known Pocket Editions. The text is that of the Authorized Version, printed in double column with the references in a third central column in Bagster style. In addition to the Old and New Testaments, this edition contains Cruden's Concordance, Chronology, Tables of Weights & Measures, Tabular Harmony, Comparative View of Quotations, and a set of maps engraved and coloured expressly for this edition. A particular feature is the set of Four Thousand Short Scripture Question with Answers, designed expressly for the use of teachers. The Teacher's Bible is an edition uncommon at best, and scarce indeed in this condition with wholly unrestored portfolio in unusually sound state. See Darlow & Moule 1081.

The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. The first edition of the NT was printed in Geneva in 1557 and was first printed in England in 1575-6. ESTC S1189; S101955; and S122901. Herbert 312.
