Jeanson (or Janson), Henri; adaptation romancee de Georges Ventillard
Amis Comme Avant Roman -- with inscription from___
Paris: Société Francaise d'editions et de publications illustrées 1944. Paperback. Very Good. Published c. 1944 color wraps very good pages tanning light wear to covers with a page long inscription to 'Frankie' who apparently was a companion of Gaston Baheux and who hosted in some manner the author of the inscription who also seems to have a personal connection to Henri Jeanson remarking that this book was from a difficult period for him. Amis Comme Avant appeared in 64pp installments in 1930. Jeanson was associated with the College of Pataphysics and wrote for satirical publications like Canard Enchainé but during WWII was active in the French resistance and was arrested a number of times including during the publication of this book for refusing the Nazis' request to publicly condemn Jews. Gaston Baheux also mentioned in the inscription was a well known gay host of salons and events friends with Colette Jean Cocteau Edith Piaf and many others the proprietor of the Tonton cabaret club a gathering place of gay and camp life in Paris from the 1920s-50s. So a nice inscription but we cannot read the signature. Société Francaise d'editions et de publications illustrées paperback

Joan Didion; Max Ember [adaptation]
Play It As It Lays: A play based on the novel by Joan Didion
New York: Max Ember 1970. Very Good. New York: Max Ember ca. 1970s. Quarto 29.5cm; post-bound mottled grey card wrappers; 1685026ll. printed mimeograph on rectos only. Light wear and toning to wrapper margins chiefly at spine foot front wrapper separating from metal binding clasp and first leaf slightly askew uneven toning to textblock; overall Very Good and sound.

Stage script for a never produced adaptation of Joan Didion's 1970 novel which had already been adapted into film in 1972. This adaptation for the stage was presumably written later in the 1970s when Ember's career started to take off after writing the Broadway adaptation of "It's a Wonderful Life" in 1976 and directing a revival of "Death of a Salesman" in 1977. The nihilism of Didion's novel however evidently posed a problem for a mainstream stage adaptation--a white box set heavy use of projectors costumes all in white for easy projection etc.

No copies in the trade or OCLC as of September 2025.
