‎Les Quatre Vents de l'esprit est un recueil de poèmes de Victor Hugo, publié en 1881. Il est présenté en quatre "livres", qui sont autant de facettes de l'art et de l'inspiration du poète, chacun étant précédé par un poème isolé : Livre satirique, sous-titré Le Siècle. Livre dramatique, sous-titré La Femme. Livre lyrique, sous-titré La Destinée. Livre épique. Ce dernier consiste en un seul poème, immense : La Révolution, un des plus importants de Victor Hugo. ‎À l'origine, Hugo devait écrire une biographie du dramaturge anglais comme préface à sa nouvelle traduction par son fils François-Victor. On peut supposer qu'emporté par son style, il n'a pu se contenter de cet objectif premier : la biographie s'est transformée en un manifeste du romantisme de centaines de pages avec une liste exhaustive, enflammée des "génies" de la littérature. Égalité des génies à travers les siècles, solidarité des persona non grata à travers leur diaspora, affleurement du récit de soi derrière la biographie dautrui, William Shakespeare a la réputation duvre "inclassable" car elle pratique le mélange des genres (essai littéraire, biographie, autobiographie, pamphlet politique) et relève dun effort utopique pour échapper au genre. Chaque partie commence certes par parler de Shakespeare, mais le sujet dérive rapidement vers la question du génie.‎
