ARISTOPHANES; MERRY W. W. INTRODUCTION & NOTES
The Frogs: Part I - Introduction And Text
Oxford University Press London: 1963. Hardcover no dustjacket. Reading copy. The play falls into two broad divisions: the journey of Dionysus and Xanthias to the lower world; and the poetical contest Aeschylus and Euripides. These two divisions are brought into mutual relation by the purpose of Dionysus' journey; which is to carry back to the upper world Euripides for whose poetry he has conceived an intense passion. But after the poetical contest he changes his mind and decides on bringing back Aeschylus instead. Shows Aristophanes' genius to combine irreverent high spirits and serious moral concern. Text is in Greek. Oxford University Press, London: 1963 hardcover
