<p>This copy of <strong>George Cruikshank's Table-Book Edited by Gilbert Abbott À Beckett</strong> is one of a Limited Edition of 300 copies published in 1885 by George Bell and Sons of London. The book is further identified as being Illustrated with Twelve Steel Plates and One Hundred and Sixteen Engravings on Wood by George Cruikshank – New Edition – With India Paper Impressions. The book which measures approximately 8 ¼ inches wide by 11 ½ inches tall by 1 ¼ inches thick has 277 numbered pages containing over 90 stories by multiple authors with the wood engraving illustrations by Cruikshank for those stories. The twelve steel plate illustrations are distributed throughout the book on individual unnumbered pages. The book is bound in contemporary half-morocco pebbled cloth covers. The pages have gilt on the top edges and are untrimmed on the other edges. The pages are very lightly tanned with text that is clear and easily read. The cover has some indications of wear along the edges corners and the top and bottom edges of the spine. The overall condition of the book is very good.</p><p><br />A book-plate on one of the front free end-papers indicates that the book was once owned by William E. Ambler. Although several people with that name can be found on internet searches the information available does not provide any certain identity of the book-plate's owner.</p><p>The illustrations accompanying this description show the book's covers the "text" Title page an "illustrated" Title page a page with a steel plate and a typical two-page with text and wood engravings.</p><p><strong>George Cruikshank</strong> born September 27 1792 London England—died February 1 1878 London English artist caricaturist and illustrator who beginning his career with satirical political cartoons and later illustrating topical and children's books became one of the most prolific and popular masters of his art.</p> George Bell & Sons hardcover

<p>This is a handsome fine binding edition of "The Comic History of Rome - From the Founding of the City to the End of the Commonwealth" by Gilbert Abbott A Beckett. Circa 1850's there is no date of publication stated; Bradbury Evans and Co.; London. This copy has been custom bound in three-quarter leather with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine gilt top page edges marbled end papers and five raised bands on the spine. The original front cover wrap has been inserted at the front. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout by John Leech with black & white drawings and numerous full-page hand-colored plates. "No. II" is stated at the top-left corner of the original front cover wrap. There are 308 numbered pages. This copy has the bookplate of Rodman Wanamaker American businessman and heir to the Wanamaker's department store fortune on the front pastedown.<br /><br />From a review: "In 'The Comic History of Rome' Gilbert Abbott À Beckett employs a unique blend of humor and historical narrative to explore the paradoxes and absurdities of Roman history. Written in the mid-19th century this engaging text combines satirical illustrations and witty prose offering a playful yet incisive commentary on the complexities of Roman politics societal norms and cultural achievements. The leather has chipped at the bottom two cover corner tips. Bright gilt on the spine and at the top edge of the text block. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Tanning to the end papers. The frontispiece has a 1" horizontal tear at the inner edge and has pulled from the spine 1/3 of the way down from the top edge. The text pages are in nice condition - mostly clean with only some foxing to the half title page the illustrated title page and a small number of random pages. An early printing of this humorous retelling of the history of Rome with ten hand-coloured plates by Punch artist John Leech. An early edition of this work dated from Jisc. A comical re-telling of the history of Rome by English humourist Gilbert Abbot A Beckett from the foundation of Rome to the end of the Roman Republic. Beckett was one of the original staff for 'Punch' magazine. With ten full page coloured plates by John Leech. as well as numerous woodcuts in text. Leech was noted caricaturist best known for his work with Punch often combining political satire with light social comedy. Leech was also the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Carol. Collated complete. In a half morocco binding over cloth covered boards and new endpapers. Externally smart with some shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities hint of sunning to the spine. With some damp marking tot he leather. Previous ownership inscription to the original front free endpaper bound in with the volume dated 1911. Internally the binding is split to the title page holding firm. The text-block following is firmly bound. With the occasional minor odd spot to the odd leaf otherwise the pages are very clean throughout. With an illustrated title page and ten full page coloured plates as well as numerous woodcuts in text. Collated complete. Good Bradbury, Agnew, & Co. hardcover

Half-bound in leather with marbled boards fore-edges and endpapers. The book is in good plus condition. The red leather is moderately worn and chipped. The top of the front joint is cracked. Cardboard exposed at the corners and at the top and bottom edges of the book. The textblock is clean and surprisingly fresh with only a few minor scattered instances of foxing.
