With Caxton's original illustrations printed in celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of his edition. Illustrated with colour images throughout. A collection of the fables attributed to Aesop a Greek fabulist and storyteller noted for his tales characterized by anthropomorphic animal characters. Many of the tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. With the illustrations of William Caxton an English merchant diplomat and writer thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England in 1476. He is credited with printing over one hundred books including the first English translation of Aesop's Fables 1484. Edited by Arthur Bamber Gascoigne an English television presenter and author who was the original quizmaster of University Challenge and his wife Christina Gascoigne an English photographer artist and editor. In the original paper covered boards. Externally very smart with light wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrappers are also very smart with light wear only. With a handmade card chemise in excellent condition. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot to the fore edge and minor age toning to the extremities. A superb copy of this limited edition facsimile of William Caxton's edition of Aesop's Fables complete with chemise and slipcase. A very scarce limited edition facsimile of William Caxton's 1484 edition of Aesop's fables. Limited to 500 copies of which this is number 317. Reproduced from the copy in the Royal Library Windsor Castle. With an introduction by Edward Hodnett.In the original rough cloth binding with leather spine label. This copy is also handsomely presented in uniform chemise inlaid with decorative marbled paper and slipcase both with paper spine labels. Caxton was an English merchant diplomat writer and most importantly thought to be the first person to introduce the printing press into England in 1476. His was the first translation of these classic fables and is complete with a series of woodcuts throughout. Chemise and slipcase provided by Eric Sweet a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style.Loosely inserted are a series of materials including a postcard informing Eric Sweet of this book a dated written receipt and newsletters from The Scolar and Alliance Record. In the original rough cloth binding with leather spine label. Together with uniform chemise and slipcase both laid with paper spine labels. Externally excellent with only minor pink marks to the front board. Philelphus (1398-1481) u. a. Es können Ausgaben mit der gleichen Titelblattvignette und den gleichen Illustrationstafeln aber verschiedenen Druckjahren und Druckorten nachgewiesen werden (vgl. u. a. Ausg. Berlin 1751). Das Frontispiz soll von Johann Michael Stock (1737-1773), Kupferstecher und Zeichner, der Goethe in Holzschnitt und Kupferstich unterrichtete, stammen, die Illustrationstafeln wurden von Georg Paul Busch (gest. 1756) gearbeitet (Vgl.
