Commissioned by a group of booksellers his edition appeared two years after Locke had recommended Aesop as an ideal first reading book for children. As Muir notes it was ""the best and largest collection of fables in English and he had children especially in mind when making his compilation"". L'Estrange's Aesop is in fact ""an assemblage of fables and facetiae from a variety of sources ancient and modern the second volume being wholly un-Aesopian. The trenchant reflections added to the individual fables possess a strong political animus and were to draw severe criticism from the later Whig fabulist Samuel Croxall; but all L'Estrange's translations have some degree of political colouring"" DNB.The simplistic yet highly effective wood engravings are by Celia M. Fiennes a direct descendant of the seventeenth-century travel writer Celia Fiennes. She was an accomplished printmaker and illustrator - in the same year as this publication she produced twelve wood engravings for the Cresset Press edition of Matthew Stevenson's 1661 work The Twelve Moneths.Provenance: From the library of the American photographer Alma Ruth Lavenson 1897-1989. Lavenson was particularly prolific in the 1920s and 30s and was influenced by Pictorialism; she worked alongside photographers such as Ansel Adams Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston and developed friendships with these artists.Chanticleer 45. Detmold including two extra plates not found in the trade edition. Thick folio publisher’s original full white polished buckram the upper cover artfully decorated with the original gilt pictorial designs surrounded by a frame ruled in gilt and filled with intertwined vines the spine handsomely gilt lettered and decorated with gilt device and gilt rules t.e.g. housed and protected in the original slipcase. A fine copy with just very light age mellowing at the spine panel the corners fine and sharp the plates all in excellent condition the text-block clean and white essentially a near as pristine copy in a protective slipcase. The slipcase with some wear as would be expected. The book profiting by the presence of the slipcase with the white cloth remaining clean and the giltwork very bright. FIRST EDITION LIMITED SIGNED NUMBERED AND SPECIALLY BOUND. This title represents in our opinion Detmold's very best work. The grace and sensitivity of the illustrations reflect a certain Eastern sensibility. The artist’s powers in the delicate communication of nature’s spirit are exemplified by these wonderful paintings rich with the wide variety of the colours in the spectrum.<br> This is a very fine copy of the best printing of the work numbered and signed by Detmold. Robert Roberts. Boston Oct 9/1876". The 17th plate "Oft for a jest we expose our modesty." which was often suppressed excised or defaced is here present and unmutilated. Neat pencilled presentation inscription dated 1925 to front free endpaper 1735 ink ownership signature at top margin of title-page. Small expert and almost invisible paper repairs to blank margins of engraved title page small hole 1/2 x 3/16 inch neatly repaired hardly affecting image on plate 14. Small neat marginal repairs to O2 pp. 35/36 V2 pp. 59/60 small hole repaired on BB2 pp. 79/80 - just touching image on recto and two letters on verso and top corner of EE2 pp. 91/92 expertly renewed with loss of page number on p.92. Occasional minimal light soiling and or foxing but overall a clean and crisp example of this magnificent and beautiful edition.<br/><br/>For this second edition of his magnificent production Barlow commissioned Aphra Behn then at the height of her popularity as a playwright poet and translator to write a quatrain summarizing the fable and to be engraved on the 110 plates illustrating the fables. In order to substitute Behn's verses for those of Thomas Philipot d. 1682 the lower area of the plate needed to be burnished down and the new verses engraved onto the plate in place of the earlier ones. "The workman doing the burnishing feared damaging the bottom border of the design above the verse: in many places traces of the tops of the letters in Philipot's top lines remain. In a few instances a small new plate for the new verse had to be inserted."Hodnett.<br/><br/>"I Conceive it necessary to say concerning the Present Edition of this Work; That it exceeds the Former by a careful Correction of the Latin Copy and by a more Exact Translation from the Latest and Best French Edition. He was also the first English etcher modern animal and bird artist recorder of sporting scenes political cartoonist and possibly modern landscape artist. The lifelikeness of his animal and bird drawings prints and paintings attracted the admiration of the founders of the Royal Society and allied him with the scientific spirit of the seventeenth century. Barlow who published the book at his own expense explains in his preface that he intends the work to contribute to the education of young people. This is the first edition; the relatively few copies known are all survivors of the Great Fire of London which swept over the printer's premises in 1666" Morgan Library Early Children's Books - citing the 1666 first edition.<br/><br/>Felix Thornley Cobbold 1841-1909 was a British barrister and Liberal Party politician. Cobbold was the son of John Cobbold Member of Parliament for Ipswich and his wife Lucy daughter of Henry Patteson sometime Rector of Drinkstone and of Wortham Suffolk. John Cobbold Thomas Cobbold and Nathaniel Cobbold grandfather of Cameron Cobbold 1st Baron Cobbold were his elder brothers. He was educated at King's College Cambridge and later became a senior fellow of this college. Cobbold also sat as Member of Parliament for Stowmarket in Suffolk between 1885 and 1886 and for Ipswich between 1906 and his death. In 1895 he presented Christchurch Mansion to the town of Ipswich as part of an arrangement to preserve the mansion and surrounding Christchurch Park from development. He also bequeathed Gippeswyk Park to Ipswich. Each of the 110 fables include a half-page engraving text fable and moral in both French and Latin along with new captions in English by Aphra Behn. The English Life of Aesop is likely a reissue of the original sheets from the small-paper copies of the 1666 edition; the French Life is a new version. They are interspersed with thirty full-page plates mostly signed by Thomas Dudley the unsigned plates were engraved by Barlow. <br /> <br /> According to his contemporary the engraver and antiquary George Vertue Francis Barlow d. 1704 came from Lincolnshire and apprenticed in London to the portrait painter William Shepherd. Early and late in his career Barlow designed sets of natural history plates which were etched by Wenceslaus Hollar Richard Gaywood Jan Griffier and Francis Place. These prints proved to be an important source for artists and craftsmen of succeeding generations. Along with his engravings for Edward Benlowes's Theophilia 1652 the present suite of illustrations for Aesop's Fables are considered to be Barlow's finest. The preliminary drawings reside in the British Museum. While Barlow's house at "the Golden Eagle in New-Street near Shoo-lane" was burnt in the great fire the copper plates for the volume survived. ODNB.<br /> <br /> Provenance and annotations: "The Gift of Rich. Wesley Esq to his Son Garret Wesley Year of Christ 1741" entered in black ink at the front endleaf; Garret's entry appears beside the imprint at the title and his "cypher" substitution chart for Greek and English letters appears beneath the gift dediction. A later owner "E.R." has noted in pencil at the pastedown that this book belonged to R. and G. Spines are a little sunned and a few light handling marks to the wraps. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. A few light marks to the clamshell in a near fine condition.
