‎AESOP. FAERNO Gabriel.‎

‎Centum fabulae ex antiquis scriptoribus delectae & à Gabriele Faerno Cremonensii carminibus explicatae hac editione variorum sapientum sententiis adornatae.Amsterdam Hendrik Wetstein 1690. 8vo. With 99 of 100 charming woodcuts 5.5 x 5.5 mm. 53 signed “A” Arnold Nicolai and 2 signed “G” Gerard Janssen van Kampen. With a woodcut flower and foliage tailpiece on the title-page woodcut head- and tailpieces and woodcut decorated initials.Contemporary vellum sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints.‎

‎16 200 6 pp. pp. 193-194 and last blank missing.Rare first Amsterdam edition based on François FoppensÂ’s 1682 Brussels edition of a famous choice collection of fables rendered in elegant Latin verse by the Italian scholar and Latin poet Gabriel Faerno ca. 1510-1561 best known for this collection of fables first published posthumously at Rome in 1563. Documentary evidence indicates that Pirro Ligorio drew the anonymous illustrations for the etchings of the first edition. Plantin published an Antwerp edition in 1566 apparently using the same woodblocks as his 1573 and 1585 editions. Pieter van der Borch redrew LigorioÂ’s illustrations as models for PlantinÂ’s woodcutters: Arnold Nicolai and Gerard van Kampen who signed their blocks “A” and “G” respectively. The woodcuts in the present Amsterdam edition are so close to PlantinÂ’s copying every line and even the block cuttersÂ’ initials in the same style that they are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. While often described as AesopÂ’s fables Faerno used other sources as well so mixed in with AesopÂ’s animal fables he includes stories of people and Greek gods including some from Brabrius and others. With the owner's inscription of Petrus Mounier 1788 on the first flyleaf. Binding a bit soiled half loose. Lacking pp. 193-194 and the final blank leaf. Pages marginally browned throughout.l Landwehr Emblem & fable books F101 2 copies; STCN same 2 copies; cf. Bodemann 38.3 1682 Foppens ed.; Fabula docet 36 1585 Plantin ed.; for the text and the 1563 illustrations: Erna Mandowsky “Pirro Ligorio's illustrations to Aesop's fables” in: Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 24 1961 pp. 327-331. unknown‎

‎Aesop. Illustrated Junior Library‎

‎Aesop's Fables‎

‎USA: Grosset & Dunlap 1947. First edition thus. Hardcover Pictorial Boards Dustjacket . Original Good Condition/Good some chipping but now in Brodart. Fritzs Kredel. Over 2000 years ago a humble Greek slave won Freedom and renown when he entertained the nobles in the court of powerful King Croesus with his fascinating and clever tales of animals who could talk like human beings. These fables were instructive. as well as amusing for from them Croesus and his court probably learned more home truths than from all the profound writings of the royal stable of philosophers.Ever since then millions of readers young and old. have derived knowledge and enjoyment from these witty and adventurous stories. And Aesop himself ranks among the greatest narrators the world has ever known. Here in one beautiful volume are the most popular of Aesops tables which have entertained countless generations of children. Stories like The Wolf and the Lamb The Fox and the Crow The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse will be remembered and re-read when many other books are long forgotten. The ten exquisite full color illustrations and more than 70 beautiful drawings in this handsome edition have been drawn by Fritz Kredel a noted artist especially for the Illustrated Junior Library. Their gayety and wit add increased pleasure to the reading of these favorite tales. Endpapers beautifully illustrated.Fritz Kredel February 8 1900 April 12 1973 was a German later American artist and graphic designer. He was born in Michelstadt-im-Odenwald then in the Grand Duchy of Hesse of the German Empire. In his early years he studied under Rudolf Koch at Offenbach School of Art and Design and developed skills in woodcuts. Koch and Kredel collaborated on A Book of Signs 1923 and The Book of Flowers 1930. Following Koch's death in 1934 Kredel moved to Frankfurt but in 1938 he fled Germany for political reasons with help from Melbert Cary. After emigrating to the United States that year he taught at Cooper Union in New York and continued to work as an artist. He produced illustrations for over 400 books in German and English and received many awards and honors. Many of his originals are now housed at the Art Library at Yale University.2Kredel illustrated Eleanor Roosevelt's children's book Christmas Alfred A. Knopf 1940 and was commissioned to create a woodcut of the Presidential Seal for the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961. He illustrated several volumes for George Macy's Limited Edition Club cf. Heritage Press and the original World's Best Fairy Tales for Reader's Digest Association 1967. The Limited Edition Club titles include The Complete Andersen: All of the Stories of Hans Christian Andersen in Six Volumes a limited edition of 1500 sets for the Limited Editions Club completed as a set 1949 LCCN 49-3049. Original blue/green cloth stamped in gilt on the upper cover and backstrip. Very good with gift inscription in ink on the front free endaper "Fanny Faithorne by her Father and Mother 1848". § First edition not a rare book but a very attractive copy of with lovely illustrations. "This book was the first illustrated entirely by John Tenniel 1820-1914 and marked a turning point in his career. Tenniel had been introduced to John Murray by Leopold Martin and Murray asked him to provide all the drawings for a revised edition of Aesop. Tenniel based his drawings on his early sketches of animals in London's Zoo. 'The book sold well and only when a new edition was compiled in 1851 did Tenniel make the necessary corrections to the anatomy to his animal drawings to harmonize with the twenty new cuts added by the accomplished bird and animal painter Joseph Wolf'. One particular design of flying beasts from hawks to bats see p. 133 caught the eye of Lewis Carroll and convinced him Tenniel would be suitable for his Alice illustrations. Mark Lemon the editor of Punch was also shown the drawings and asked Tenniel to join his group of artists." Engen Dictionary of Victorian Wood Engravers pp.24-26. John Murray hardcover‎

‎AESOP. L'ESTRANGE Sir Roger.‎

‎Fables of Aesop.‎

‎London: for R. Sare B. Took M. Gillyflower A. & J. Churchil G. Sawbridge and H. Hindmarsh 1699. Extra-illustrated Tall quarto 310 x 194 mm. Twentieth-century sprinkled calf spine gilt in compartments with red morocco title label sides panelled in blind with floral rolls and cornerpieces board edges gilt-rolled red edges. Engraved frontispiece portrait of L'Estrange extra-illustrated with 136 engraved plates by Francis Barlow some signed by the engraver Tho. Dudley laid down. Some faint tanning or spots to leaves and occasional pencil annotations but overall an excellent copy. Third edition extra-illustrated copy with a complete suite of Francis Barlow's etchings engraved by Thomas Dudley bound in to face the relevant fables. Though the Barlow plates were first published in 1666 they were first published alongside L'Estrange's text in the first French language edition Amsterdam: Estienne Roger 1714. The plates here are taken from that edition; presumably the English owner had seen the edition liked what he saw and had the plates from it bound in to improve his own copy. London: for R. Sare, B. Took, M. Gillyflower, A. & J. Churchil, G. Sawbridge, and H. Hindmarsh, unknown‎

‎London: for R. Sare B. Took M. Gillyflower A. & J. Churchil G. Sawbridge and J. Hindmarsh 1699. 2 vols. in one folio 10 28 8 476; 16 238 2 ads. pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of L’Estrange by Roger White after Geoffrey Kneller and full page engraving of Aesop and animals both in vol. 1. Contemporary calf neatly rebacked and tips restored a clean very well-margined copy. Inscribed twice by John Bailward dated 1730 and a few pencil notes and sketches in the text. § One of the first collections of fables prepared specifically for children. Third edition corrected and amended from the 1692 edition. With the second part in first edition the two seldom found together. Roger L'Estrange 1616-1704 was Tory journalist and pamphleteer notorious for his censorship of “seditious†Whig publications in his role as Surveyor of the Press. His edition of Aesop was commissioned by a group of booksellers and appeared two years after Locke first recommended Aesop as a first reading book for children. Muir writes it was “the best and largest collection of fables in English and he had children especially in mind when making his compilation… He included many other fabulists besides Aesop notably a selection from La Fontaine within 20 years of the first appearance of any of his fables in French. It is highly probable that this was their earliest appearance in English.†The DNB notes of L’Estrange’s Aesop that it was “an assemblage of fables and facetiae from a variety of sources ancient and modern the second volume being wholly unAesopian. The trenchant reflections added to the individual fables possess a strong political animus and were to draw severe criticism from the later whig fabulist Samuel Croxall; but all L'Estrange's translations have some degree of political colouring… This compilation also includes a biography of Aesop an alphabetical table of the fables and fables by Barlandus Anianus Abstemius Poggius and La Fontaine.†DNB.
