Benett original pictorial green cloth front and spine panels stamped in black and gold. Later printing of the first British edition. ADRIFT IN THE PACIFIC
1894. New and Cheaper Edition. Illustrated. London: Sampson Low Marston & Company 1894. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. "New and Cheaper Edition" issued five years after Sampson Low's first U.K. edition in a similar binding showing Briant diving into the water from a giant kite and with the same illustrations. In this tale a dozen young boys are shipwrecked without adults on a desert island and struggle to survive during the two years they await rescue; they divide into two antagonistic groups with quite different philosophies. This adventure has often been cited as a precursor to William Golding's rather similar LORD OF THE FLIES 1954. This tale was first published in 1888 as DEUX ANS DE VACANCES and in English in early 1889 by George Munro in his cheap wrappered "Seaside Library" as A TWO YEARS' VACATION. In November 1889 Sampson Low published ADRIFT IN THE PACIFIC a hardbound illustrated "two parts in one" version being a different translation. This copy has been recased within its original binding preserving the original light yellow endpapers reinforced at the inner hinges -- but is otherwise near-fine very minor rubbing of the spine gilt. Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth
Boston: Henry L. Shepard & Co. 1874. Hardcover small octavo bound ii publisher's decorative terra-cotta cloth stamped in black and gold with gilt hippopotamus on upper cover and spine. 190 pages. Brown coated end-papers. Illustrated with 20 full page engravings by Jules Ferat. Second American edition. First edition thus published simultaneously with the Scribner Welford and Armstrong in New York albeit a pirated edition. Very early printing Tenth Thousand on title page. Originally published in Paris in 1872 as Aventures de trois Russes et de trois Anglais dans l'Afrique australe the London edition of the following year and the subsequent Scribner imprint retained essentially the same title adding only the prefix Meridiana. The Shepard edition however chose a wholely new and much more exotic title possibly capitalizing on Verne's previous novel "A Floating City". Whatever the reason early on this novel can be found under alternate titles such as Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth Measuring a Meridian and Meridiana or Adventures in South Africa. A nice copy. No previous ownership marks. Hinges sound and tight. Cloth clean and bright with only very minor rubbing to tips and spine ends. One page shows small tear to upper margin not affecting text and measuring approximately .75 inches. Old repair has sealed tear albeit it is visible. A superior copy of an early Verne adventure novel. Very good or better. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Not Issued. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Henry L. Shepard & Co. Hardcover
