A set of loose sheets which were never cased in the publisher's cloth edges entirely untrimmed not gilded now bound in period-style marbled boards. Contents and plates clean deckled edges a little dusty modern covers as new. One of Verne's rarest British first editions this is a largely forgotten Irish novel being a heart-warming story of a young orphan's trials and tribulations in late nineteenth century Ireland. Mick journeys to Westport Galway Limerick Tralee Cork and Belfast all of which are vividly pictured. On his travels he meets beggars thieves farmers and landlords eventually arriving in Dublin where his fortunes improve. Interestingly Gill's announcement referred to a quarto size apparently quite rare if it exists; presumably a decision was made in favor of the known size about 7.3" x 5.6". In any case a popular translation one which was followed by a "New Holiday Edition" and a "popular edition". Condition: hinges tender rear hinge starting; spine shows some fading with small but notable fraying at top and bottom extremes; general mild soil and wear. Undated lightly-penciled previous owner's signature on flyleaf. Better than good most accurately about very good. Publisher's green cloth with black and gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Yellow-coated endpapers. Toned to edges with some minor repairs to rear hinge otherwise a clean copy. Just a little light wear to cloth and a hint of toning to spine. Very good. Another splendid example of Mr. Verne's imaginary sweep including a giant space-gun a bullet-spaceship furnished like a high class railway carriage and a bunch of stalwart chaps careering round in space dressed in frock coats surrounded by an orbiting cloud of broken bottles food wrappers and dead dogs. All in a day's work for Mr. Verne although he may have broken his golden rule here and left out either pirates or giant steam powered elephants. Light stain in blank inner margin of pp. 40/41 caused by small strip of brown paper.<br /> <br /> Publisher's beveled-edge horizontally-ribbed red-orange cloth front cover and spine richly decorated and lettered in gilt and black brown coated endpapers. George W. Alexander New York binder's ticket on rear paste-down. Contemporary pencil inscription dated "Jan 1 1874" on recto of front blank. Very light wear at spine tips three tiny tears at crown otherwise an excellent near fine copy.<br /> <br /> A lovely survival of a major Verne title in striking American trade cloth.
