A supreme achievement of scientific fantasy First edition in English of the complete lunar voyage combining De la Terre à la Lune 1865 and its sequel Autour de la Lune 1869. The idea of a return trip to the moon has fascinated writers from Lucian of Samosata in the second century CE to Dante Cyrano de Bergerac Daniel Defoe Edgar Allan Poe and countless others. Verne's however is "the most important lunar voyage in science-fiction; the first hard science-fiction novel with full recognition that the preparations for a moon voyage may be just as interesting as the lunar voyage itself. It is also one of the first lunar voyages written from the point of view of scientific adventure rather than as personal satire or religious speculation" Bleiler. The calculations in the work such as the escape velocity required to leave Earth's orbit were produced with the assistance of the mathematicians Henri Garcet a cousin of Verne and Joseph Bertrand. Verne's scientific ideas inspired Konstantin Tsiolkovsky a father of astronautics who envisioned multistage rockets as a feasible alternative to the large cannon or "space gun" design he encountered in the story. A century after its publication Verne's tale was cited by Neil Armstrong during his own return voyage on Apollo 11. The work was also famously adapted by Georges Méliès for the film A Trip to the Moon 1902. De la Terre à la Lune alone had previously appeared in the English translation of J. K. Hoyt in America where it was serialized and then published in wrappers without illustrations accompanying the text in 1869. The present edition precedes by one year the first US hardcover and illustrated edition of the complete voyage. Red and blue cloth variants have been noted in addition to the green seen here without priority. Octavo. Backstrip is missing a maximum of 1/2" from the top end and a much smaller piece from the lower end. Backstrip had some splits including a long curved split which have now been glued down. Book is cocked. Covers have light wear to the lower outer corners slight wear to the upper outer corners. New endpapers show photo. There is a thin damp stain to the lower end of the outer edge from the frontis through page 19. Front cover has a small stain light in color by the nose of the rocket. With an introduction by JeanJules-Verne and illustrations by Robert Shore. One of only 1500 copies printed with this copy identified as number 969 and signed by the illustrator Robert Shore. From the Earth to the Moon 206 pages with 8 color plates. Around the Moon contains pages 207 to 425 and is illustrated with 8 color plates. London: Sampson Low Marston & Co. Ltd 1876. Half Leather. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A lovely copy of this contemporary bound book. Two volumes bound as one160pp; 189pp. From the earth to the moon has 7 full page illustrative plates as called for and Five weeks in a balloon is illustrated with numerous drawings in the text. This book was published in 1876 as the author's illustrated edition. Translated from the original French. Bound in original contemporary leather with marbled boards. 5 bands to the spine and gilt embossed lettering to the two title blocks on the spine. Cloth page divider still attached at the head of the spine. There is rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the board corners leaving the leather with slight loss and a little rounded. Light fading to the leather spine. There is loss of the edges of the title blocks with some loss of the gilt lettering. A very slight split to the head of the spine between the rear board and spine strip. Previous owners gilt name and address sticker to the head of the front paste down with a small red sticker with the number 34 within it. A neat sepia ink name inscription to the reverse of the front end paper with a stamp G.E.T. to the tail of the same page and also to the tail of the reverse of the rear end paper. Some foxing to the reverse of the front end paper preliminary blank page title page and last few pages of the book. Occassional scattered light foxing elsewhere. The mustard colored cloth is worn along the top edges of the boards and has a tiny chip at the top of the spine. The spine has the title in gilt and drawing of Jules Verne in blue and black taking up most of the bottom half of the spine. The front board has an illustration again in blue and black of a bullet-shaped capsule taking off with stars and clouds in the background.
