Plate opposite p. 174 has blue crayon slightly marking the picture itself. Stains to margins of pp. 316-317 also affecting surrounding pages. Other stains throughout worse towards rear. A few signatures jutting out slightly. Wrapped in mylar removed for photos. <br/><br/>Despite not being his usual science fiction this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt is considered by many to be one of Verne's finest novels. While not about science a scientific phenomenon the Leidenfrost effect is used as a plot device when he hero's evaporating tears save the hero him from being blinded. The story has been adapted many times for film TV and cartoon entertainment even adapted into a play by Verne himself and Adolphe d'Ennery. <br /> <br />The role of Chambers as secondary translator is interesting. During the translation by Kingston for the British edition it was discovered that one chapter "The Marshes of the Baraba" was almost untranslatable because of the knowledge of entomology it demanded. Chambers visited Verne himself at Amiens and had the author go over the text of this highly scientific section. He was impressed by Verne's library of insect books and the specimens he had collected from the French vice consular agent at Tomsk. <br /> <br />At rear is the novella "The Mutineers" followed by 6 p. of publisher's ads. A first printing with the 1877 date on the title page and published by Scribner Armstrong and Company New York. Illustrated throughout with frontispiece half-title vignette 90 black and white plates and a double-page map at the rear. This action-packed adventure is a departure from Verne's usual science fiction endeavors and many consider it one of his finest novels. Condition: 8vo. 377 pages and 6 pages of ads at the rear. The publisher's attractive green cloth pictorial boards with beveled edges stamped in black and gilt on the front and spine. Heavy edgewear with some fraying to the cloth corners bumped with cloth worn away at the tips. Spine ends chipped and frayed and some rubbing and a few scrapes to the back cover. A slight spine lean a previous owners name and small stamp mark on the front pastedown scattered foxing throughout and an unfortunate dampstain that runs along the upper and outer edge of a number of interior pages but does not impact the text block. Overall a good copy of this increasingly scarce first American edition.</p> Scribner Armstrong hardcover

First Wyeth-illustrated edition of this adventure novel by the French author better known for his science fiction - a Brandywine beauty with gorgeous color plates by Wyeth. MICHAEL STROGOFF has been adapted to screens large and small almost since the genesis of the moving picture as an art form: its first foray into theaters was in 1910 at the hands of Thomas Edison's movie studio. The N. C. Wyeth edition illuminated the story in Brandywine style with atmospherically lit characters and sweeping scenery. This copy is in particularly attractive condition and retains its rare original box. 9.5'' x 7''. Original black cloth boards with color pictorial paper panel. Fore-edge machine deckle. Color pictorial endpapers of the Kremlin at sunset. Color pictorial title page with nine color plates. viii 398 pages.
