The paper is toned which is typical of late-19th Century cheap reprints however the publishers invested in very nice bindings. There is no publication date but Allison began bringing out its reprints mainly marketed to the juvenile market in the mid-1880s. Quercus rather arbitrarily assigns circa 1890 as a reasonable date. It was first published in America by Osgood in 1873 and many pirate editions appeared throughout the late 19th century. This book has the features of a pirate; nice even spectacular binding combined with a poor quality textblock. The "Syndicate Trading Company" here was not a true pirate nor a traditional book publisher. It was forma ed in 1881as an enterprise to market publisher remainders. There is no publicatin date; Quercus arbitrarily assigns it to 1885 awaiting more clarification. Dark green cloth binding decoratively blindstamped with titling on the spine in a gilt compartment. Designated as part of the "Gladstone Series." The text is clean and clear but very well tanned and the front endpapers are removed. Very mild bumping to the corners. . First Edition Thus. This is a Near Fine copy of an early American reprinting. There is no publication date but the namestyle of the publisher dates it between 1892 and 1902. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of an early printing. Maroon cloth binding with titling and rules in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 194 pages; top edge is gilt. The textblock is particularly bright and clear with no foxing or tanning evident. The paper stock is of much higher quality than normally seen in American reprints and pirates of this era. Boston MA: Lee and Shephard 1882. Adventure fiction FIRST EDITION THUS being the first fully illustrated issue of the first American Edition which was also the first edition in English. Octavo 19 x 15cm pp.2; vi; 271; 3 blank. Illustrated throughout. Publisher's green pictorial cloth decorated in black and gilt sewn endbands. Bookplate 'W.G. Phelps'. Contents clean and fresh a few gatherings slightly proud covers are exceptionally bright. A remarkably crisp copy. Lee & Shepard's edition was initially published in October 1879 but was dated 1880. A year later in October 1880 though dated 1881 Dutton published the first illustrated edition from Sampson Low's British sheets; the London edition was actually not published until a month later in November 1880. New York NY: E.P. Dutton and Company 1881 1880. French Literature FIRST FREWER EDITION. Octavo 19 x 15cm pp.2 viii; 262 4. With 49 engraved plates by Benett including a frontispiece. Publisher's light blue cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Some heavy creasing and a couple of small tears to fly-leaf and first blank. Lightly toned throughout; a distinct tobacco scent. Heavy toning to spine and board margins. Very good. Something of a farce in which a wealthy Chinese man tries to have himself killed to trigger a life insurance policy after being informed that he has lost his fortune only to discover later that he has not lost everything. First translated into English in the US in 1879. Although this edition is made up from sheets printed in London with a title page dated 1881 it was actually published just before the London edition in October 1880 since Sampson Low had decided to save its own publication for the Christmas gift market in November. It is therefore neither the first edition in English nor the first UK edition but it is the first edition of this particular translation. New York, NY: E.P. Dutton and Company, 1881 [1880] unknown
