Circa 1914 no date of publication is stated though the first "one elephant" front cover design was used in 1914; Librairie Hachette; Paris. The book is written entirely in French. The book is richly illustrated with in-text drawings throughout. Beautifully bound in decorative cloth with elaborate gilt decorations on the front cover. Gilt top page edges. Hefty book with 616 numbered pages. The book tells the story of five Union prisoners of war who escape Civil War Richmond in a balloon crash-land on a deserted South Pacific island and use their scientific knowledge to build a self-sufficient civilization from scratch all while discovering mysterious forces aiding them revealed to be the reclusive Captain Nemo from 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.' It's a tale of survival invention and adventure blending science with utopian island narratives like 'Robinson Crusoe'.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean front cover and spine; some very light soiling on the back cover. Tiny cloth tear at the bottom-right corner tip of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached.
