This copy seems to have been made up from spare first edition sheets as part of the first cheap edition which appeared in this binding. First translated into English in the US in 1879. Although this edition is made up from sheets printed in London with a title page dated 1881 it was actually published just before the London edition in October 1880 since Sampson Low had decided to save its own publication for the Christmas gift market in November. A large purple ink ownership to flyleaf dated 1911. Toning to edges and occasional light spotting. Sunning to spine and moderate wear to cloth with a few minor splash marks. Very good. Another one of Mr. Verne's forays into deep space stuffed to the portholes with engraved plates depicting men in handlebar moustaches lurching about jungles on horseback and into orbit in a balloon. With 24 engraved plates including a frontispiece. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper. Brown-coated endpapers. Inside joints are tight often cracked no ink names contents clean binding a little rubbed and handled some minor bumping; a very good copy indeed. A rare edition published purely to kill an unauthorised edition of the first half of 'From the Earth to the Moon' titled 'The Baltimore Gun Club' which appeared a little before Scribner's complete edition. Another splendid example of Mr. Verne's imaginary sweep including a giant space-gun a bullet-spaceship furnished like a high class railway carriage and a bunch of stalwart chaps careering round in space dressed in frock coats surrounded by an orbiting cloud of broken bottles food wrappers and dead dogs. All in a day's work for Mr. Verne although he may have broken his golden rule here and left out either pirates or giant steam powered elephants. This translation first published in London in 1873. Book a little out of shape and with some spotting mostly to text edges. Else Book is in very good plus condition with very minor signs of wear and/or age. DW priced 2/- net on flap has a numbered list of 49 books in THE PRIZE LIBRARY of which this No 47. DW is quite heavily spotted and browned . Very good. A group of Russian and English scientists travel through the Kalahari desert in order to accurately measure the circumference of the Earth only to discover in the middle of their work that their two countries have gone to war. Essentially a pirate copy consisting of a slightly abridged version of the Frewer translation published by Scribner the very same day in the US. Although it was billed as one of the cheapest ever books produced in the US at that time priced at $1.00 it is a handsome looking beast though it is printed on inferior paper with fewer illustrations than would be usual for a Verne first edition at this time.
