Publisher's catalogue referred to on title verso is not included. <br/><br/>The adventures of the mysterious Robur and his flying ship the Albatross written more than 16 years before Orville and Wilbur Wright's historic first flight. The book reuses a modified version of one of Benett's illustrations from an earlier work. The plate opposite p. 94 shows the Albatross hovering above a train on the Pacific Railway. This same illustration without the Albatross appeared in the French edition of "Around the World in 80 Days" but was omitted from the British and American editions. <br /> <br />John Bumpus bookdealer was located at 350 Oxford Street London from the early 1850s to 1935. The firm is traditionally stated to have begun in Clerkenwell about 1790 but can't be proven to exist before the name is listed in the Holborn area from around 1815. The first Bumpus overcame an insolvency only to drown himself in the Surrey Canal in 1832. His sons carried on the business and around 1853 the second John Bumpus opened the Oxford Street branch. In 1920 it was bought by Debenhams Ltd. <br /> <br />Sir David Salomons 1st Baronet 1797 1873 was a leading figure in the 19th century struggle for Jewish emancipation in the United Kingdom. Shepard had also serialized Part First probably to create interest in this pirated edition. Last ad page advertises "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth" complete with an illustration. <br /> <br />Oddly the editor of American Homes Eggleston complained in an 1875 editorial that "The Mysterious Island" had extended into too many volumes three - all filled with a long catalogue of minute details. While some reviewers found the level of detail in the work tedious others praised Verne's new version of "Robinson Crusoe" with modern improvements. <br /> <br />Kingston's translation made a few changes from Verne's original French; the hero's surname is changed from Smith to Harding and many technical passages are abridged or omitted. Wrapped in mylar removed for photos. <br/><br/>Despite not being his usual science fiction this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt is considered by many to be one of Verne's finest novels. While not about science a scientific phenomenon the Leidenfrost effect is used as a plot device when he hero's evaporating tears save the hero him from being blinded. The story has been adapted many times for film TV and cartoon entertainment even adapted into a play by Verne himself and Adolphe d'Ennery. <br /> <br />The role of Chambers as secondary translator is interesting. During the translation by Kingston for the British edition it was discovered that one chapter "The Marshes of the Baraba" was almost untranslatable because of the knowledge of entomology it demanded. Chambers visited Verne himself at Amiens and had the author go over the text of this highly scientific section. He was impressed by Verne's library of insect books and the specimens he had collected from the French vice consular agent at Tomsk. <br /> <br />At rear is the novella "The Mutineers" followed by 6 p. of publisher's ads. Young readers might not have known what a "nyclatop" was but if they saw one flapping its wings around a dark fortress in the Carpathians they would run for it as does hero Nic Deck. Some readers may recognize John W. Lovell 1851-1932 as a Canadian publisher and he was indeed born in Montreal in 1851. His father John Lovell Sr. 1810-93 was a Canadian publisher born in Ireland. John W. who had experience operating his father's large printing plant moved to Rouse's Point New York in 1873 to run a printing plant there. After marrying a local girl in 1876 he became an American citizen and moved to New York City. There he published a wide variety of books and took advantage of the lack of international copyright laws to print popular titles of the day including those of Dickens as well as Verne. As a born Canadian it's not surprising he would print this story set in his native land. According to the title page he was located at 150 Worth Street cor. Then King & Baird of Philadelphia published an unauthorized issue of the first part titled "The Baltimore Gun Club." Original French title "Aventures de Trois Russes et de Trois Anglais Dans L'Afrique Australe" put the Russians first but English translations reverse the nationalities putting Englishmen at front. The word "Meridiana" is unique to English language editions and refers to the geographical measurements conducted by the story's multinational expedition. Plates illustrate African animals as well as human adventures. A review in the New York Evening Post stated "It is quite as wonderful and marvelous as anything this fanciful Frenchman has written." The best- known attempt on the record was that of Nellie Bly who completed the trip in just over 72 days in 1889-90 finding time to drop in on Verne at home in Amiens along the way. The descriptions of the villagers their costumes lifestyles and belief in the supernatural make an interesting read on their own but coupled with an exciting adventure story this is fine reading indeed. Young readers might not have known what a "nyclatop" was but if they saw one flapping its wings around a dark fortress in the Carpathians they would run for their lives just like hero Nic Deck. Overall pages are clean and neat. <br/><br/>Verne's first big success is according to the Publishers' Note a satire on English travel books about Africa. Deadly on-ground obstructions are avoided by the ingenious use of balloon travel although there are still savages storms volcanoes mirages and grasshoppers to contend with. The book combining known science with Verne's own flights of imagination was an immediate hit with the public. Discolouration to text block edges. Some light soiling to first pages. <br/><br/>Early English translations of "Voyage au Centre de la Terre" generally added "A" in front of the title. Oddly Verne's Professor "Lidenbrock" becomes "Von Hardwigg" and there are other changes from the original French. Despite oddities in the translation "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" remains one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Riou's illustrations enter into the spirit of the text including creepy dark caverns a mushroom forest prehistoric animals a sea monster a plain of bones "human" remains and so on. A modern adult is overwhelmed by the amount of scientific knowledge in Verne's head as well as his fertile imagintion. <br /> <br />Theodore Sizer 1892 1967 was an American professor of the history of art at Yale University and a director of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven Connecticut. In 1916 he married Caroline Wheelwright Foster. <br /> <br />10 p. of publisher's ads at rear with first page advertising works by Verne including "Meridiana" and "From the Earth to the Moon."
