Illustrated with lovely ornamented engravings and flourishes in black and white throughout. Label on the spine bears the name "Inside endpapers show wear. Perrault" written in ink. Front hinge is weak yet binding is remarkably tight. Some moderate crumple to the front flyleaves but does not compromise any text. Vintage note written in French taped to the recto side opposite the title page. Pages are predominantly free from marginalia except for the name of a previous owner written in ink within the front pastedown also presumed from the period. All edges have toned as expected. Even as several areas throughout bear light dampstain and pages hold a slight wave the leaves have absolutely beautifully and evenly toned with very little foxing or discoloration for being over 350 years old. An absolutely gorgeous edition. Beautiful to add to any antiquarian book collection. <br><br>At over 3 lbs. due to the size and weight of this edition additional postage may be necessary. A brief telling of the classic Red Riding Hood tale ending with the wolf being slain by Red Riding Hood's father and the wood-cutters but with no mention of Red Riding Hood being saved. In POOR condition. A 2 inch jagged horizontal tear present at the center fore edge affecting all pages and covers. This tear spans the whole of the last page dividing it almost in half horizontally. Another tear parallel to the other one affecting the front cover and first leaf. Small jagged hole in the rear cover. Minor to moderate soiling to the covers. Moderate darkening. Mostly minor edgewear. A one by three inch dampstain present affecting the upper margin of the pages. Scattered mostly minor soiling throughout. Minor darkening to the pages. POOR condition. He then leaves Basel for Cluny while his family remained behind in penury and he does not return until 1499 when he retires ; this publication amongst the earliest for Basle is of the celebrated work of William of Auvergne ca. 1180-1271 : the Summa de Virtutibus or The Summation of Virtues the first of the famous two-part tract whose second part published separately treats of the vices. William was born in the former Province of Auvergne about 1180 and by 1223 he was master of theology at the University of Paris and a canon at Notre Dame. He was consecrated Bishop and given the See of Paris in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and he remained there until his death in 1249. The Summa de Virtutibus et Viitis On the Virtues and Vices a massive work is itself part of a much larger work the Magisterium Divinale et Sapientiale The Teaching on God in the Mode of Wisdom. The style of the work is somewhat rambling moving off into many tangents as it explores related concepts and makes the work appear as an extemporaneous discourse often making a point and then immediately raising objections to that point which William then proceeds to refute.
