Eluard, Paul
Le Devoir et l’Inquiétude. Poème. Suivis de Le Rire d’un Autre
Paris: Chez A.-J. Gonon 1917. First edition. 34 8 pp. Original marbled paper wrappers title printed in gilt on the front cover. Spine a little faded some offsetting to endleaves else clean and near fine.<br /> <br /> One of 200 numbered copies on Arches of 206 total initialed by the publisher. The first book Eluard published under that name originally his grandmother’s maiden name and his first regularly available publication. The poems were informed by Eluard’s experience at the front and some of them had been printed the previous year in a mimeographed trench edition of seventeen copies. He was thrilled with the book and wrote to Gonon “the book is perfect the wood is perfect. Not one mistake. And without reading my verses to simply open and look at the little volume the perfection of the work celebrates the charm of the things we are attached to.†The frontispiece woodcut by Deslignères depicts an exhausted infantryman surrounded by his gear.<br /> <br /> This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper “A Jean Paulhan / au guerrier appliqué / en faible expression de ma / reconnaissance / Paul Eluard.†An excellent association. Paulhan was the one who recommended Eluard to André Breton in 1919 to involve him in the incipient journal Littérature and thereby set in motion one of the great alliances of twentieth-century literature. Interestingly another copy inscribed to Paulhan exists one of the six on Japon with the same inscription dated in 1918 and 1919 Christie’s Bibliothèque André Guichard March 21 2024 lot 72 unsold. Eluard, Paul; pseud. Didier Desroches. Man Ray and Dora Maar, photographs
Le Temps Déborde
Paris: Éditions Cahiers d'Art 1947. First edition. 48 pp. Plain wrappers with attached dust jacket. Some toning to cover extremities minor handling wear near fine.<br /> <br /> One of 500 numbered copies although Eluard noted that only 258 copies were printed due to a lack of paper. Eluard's poignant tribute to his wife Nusch published a few months after her sudden and unexpected death. Illustrated with eleven exquisite photographs of Nusch by Man Ray and Dora Maar. Nusch had also been the subject of Man Ray's camera in the similarly superlative Facile published ten years earlier. In 1965 Louis Aragon during a tribute to his friend mentioned his first encounter with the book: "He signed it with an invented name Didier Desroches because he had killed Paul Eluard. What he had shown me of Didier was of a confounding beauty. This little book which was to appear as the work of an unknown it is an understatement to say that in my eyes it surpasses all that Eluard signed with his name. I thought it then and I think it today." A rare and beautiful book. Éditions Cahiers d'Art unknown

ELUARD, Paul, and Max ERNST.
Les Malheurs des Immortels.
1945. Paris: Editions de la Revue Fontaine. 1945. 8vo. Original beige wrappers with fold-over flaps; black title lettering in black; pp. unpaginated; pages lightly toned with minimal spotting to front end paper; otherwise very good. Signed by both Eluard and Ernst and intriguingly inscribed by Eluard in French 'To Mr and Mrs Edwin Sisler this book of which I only did a third' possibly insinuating the presence of a third collaborator. Second Edition this work numbered 558 of the run of 1860.A landmark of Surrealism and the first collaboration between two of the movement's most essential and revered contributors. Combining Ernst's images with Eluard's poetry Les Malheurs Des Immortels explores the relationship between painting and poetry 'the role of the image as an icon of psychic processes and the ambivalent status of the scopic function or the reversibility of blindness and revelation'. unknown

ELUARD, Paul, & Max Ernst.
Les malheurs des immortels.
Paris: Éditions de la Revue Fontaine 1945. Second edition number 1729 one of 500 on vélin rose from a total edition of 1860. The first edition was printed in an unspecified "small number of copies" rear of volume. This is Ernst and Éluard's second joint publication and first genuine collaboration: for Répétitions published earlier the same year as Les Malheurs 1922 Éluard simply chose whichever of Ernst's collages best suited his poems; for Malheurs the pair worked in "near-perfect symbiosis" Assa to produce a work on themes such as "the relationship between painting and poetry the role of the image as icon of psychic processes and the ambivalent status of the scopic function - or the reversibility of blindness and revelation" ibid. anticipating Breton's vaunted Manifeste du surréalisme 1924 by two years. Octavo. Frontispiece and 20 plates after collages by Ernst. Original cream light card wrappers printed in green black unopened. With the glassine dust jacket as issued. Minor spotting to wrappers else a fine copy. Assa The French Review Vol. 64 No. 3 3 February 1991 p. 643. unknown
