Vuole essere un momento di svago tra adulto e bambino, capace di facilitarne l'apprendimento in modo giocoso, per mezzo di suoni, immagini, cantilene scherzose. Si utilizza lo stampatello maiuscolo, più semplice e più familiare. Attraverso le filastrocche illustrate si snoda la presentazione delle lettere, in modo un po' diverso da quello consueto: l'ordine alfabetico non è rispettato se non nelle pagine iniziali, che raccolgono, in piccolo formato e in modo riassuntivo, la maggior parte delle illustrazioni del testo. A ciascuna lettera corrisponde un'immagine, che ad essa non si riferisce solo per il suono dell'iniziale, (ad esempio A come auto o albero), ma che, vista nelle sue linee essenziali, già ne ripropone la forma. Ecco le vocali nella "Filastrocca del primo mattino con la mamma", poi le consonanti, "Con una maestra molto affettuosa, ma ogni tanto un po' nervosa", quindi la storia della povera acca travagliata dai bulli, nella "Filastrocca un po' natalizia di una cattiveria e di un'amicizia", che introduce qualche piccola nota educativa. Infine qualche magia da sapere per non incorrere, a causa delle difficoltà ortografiche, in delusioni nella letterina di Natale: sciarpa e scarpa, agnello ed anello, mollettina e mogliettina...
