‎Troisième édition revue et augmentée (EO: 1633) de cette très rare grammaire française de cette époque, par Antoine Oudin (1595-1653), linguiste français, interprète et secrétaire des rois Louis XIII puis Louis XIV. Les grammaires françaises publiées à cette époque, cest à dire avant la création de lAcadémie Française en 1634 et dont le premier dictionnaire ne paraît quen 1694, sont très rares et nous navons pas trouvé dexemplaire vendu de cette grammaire lors de ces 50 dernières années. Antoine Oudin est le fils de César Oudin, lui-même interprète et secrétaire dHenry IV. Au cours de sa vie, Antoine Oudin, avant tout romaniste, cest à dire spécialiste des langues romanes telles que le français ou litalien, est tantôt traducteur, lexicographe, autrement dit rédacteur de dictionnaires voire de grammaires, mais aussi écrivain. A loccasion dun voyage en Italie, il se lie damitié avec le pape Urbain VIII auprès duquel il perfectionne sa connaissance de la langue italienne. Vers la fin de sa vie, en 1651, il donnera dailleurs des leçons ditalien à Louis XIV. Ainsi, Oudin rédige plusieurs ouvrages de linguistique et dictionnaires bilingues parmi lesquels on peut citer: «Curiosités françoises, pour servir de complément aux dictionnaires, ou recueil de plusieurs belles propriétés, avec une infinité de proverbes et de quolibets pour l'explication de toutes sortes de livres» (Paris, 1640), «Recherches italiennes et françoises, ou Dictionnaire contenant outre les mots ordinaires, une quantité de proverbes et de phrases pour l'intelligence de l'une & l'autre langue. Avec un abrégé de grammaire italienne» (Paris 1640), «Trésor des deux langues espagnole et françoise, ou dictionnaire espagnol-françois et françois-espagnol» (Paris 1645) ou encore le présent ouvrage, «Grammaire françoise rapportée au langage du temps» (Paris 1633). Il est important de rappeler que ce dernier, premier travail de Oudin sur la langue française, est antérieur à la fondation de la célèbre Académie Française, fondée en 1634 par le Cardinal Richelieu. De fait, elle est une référence importante pour le travail des premiers académiciens qui donnera lieu au «Dictionnaire de l'Académie française», dont la première édition est publiée en 1694 et dont la neuvième est actuellement en cours de rédaction. A propos des dictionnaires et des grammaires, il y a deux approches possibles pour traiter dune langue: celle prescriptive, visant à imposer un usage jugé correct, ou bien celle descriptive, cherchant à décrire les usages dans toute leur diversité sans chercher à en imposer un à la place des autres. Si lapproche de Oudin est majoritairement prescriptive, il aborde tout de même parfois les autres usages attestés. Toutefois, son objectif nen reste pas moins dédicter les règles permettant une bonne utilisation selon lui de la langue française, son travail sinscrit ainsi davantage dans une approche prescriptive. Il est ici question du «francien», parlé dans une région étendue autour de lîle de France et variété dialectale de la langue dOïl. Cette dernière était parlée durant plusieurs siècles dans la moitié nord du territoire actuel de la France métropolitaine, à lexception de la Bretagne, de lAlsace et de la Lorraine, mais aussi au sud du territoire actuel de la Belgique (Wallonie). Celle-ci prend forme à partir du milieux du moyen âge et disparaît progressivement à partir de la révolution de 1789 pour devenir le français tel que parlé de nos jours, ce dernier étant très majoritairement hérité du francien. A cette époque, le francien étant le dialecte du roi et de sa cour, mais aussi de grands auteurs de littérature, il simpose et remplace peu à peu le latin, longtemps préféré à lécrit, notamment par les sciences et lÉglise, et qui subsistera encore longtemps après. A partir de lordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts (1539), le roi François Ier souhaite que les écrits juridiques et administratifs soient rédigés en «langue françoise». Par «langue françoise», aujourdhui appelée «langue française», et même si le terme a pût être employé pour se référer à la langue dOïl toute entière, on entend par là plus précisément le dialecte francien. Cette volonté ne porte que sur lécrit, le but nest ni dinterdire lusage des autres dialectes de la langue dOïl, ni celui de la langue dOc, parlée dans la partie sud de lactuelle France métropolitaine, ni même dautres langues régionales. Ainsi, à la demande des rois qui se succèdent, plusieurs auteurs sessaient à énoncer les règles du bon français. Cette volonté de normalisation afin dutiliser le français en lieu et place du latin dans un certain nombre de domaines donnera lieu à la création de lAcadémie Française. Lapproche de Oudin dans cet ouvrage témoigne parfaitement de cette volonté. Dans un premier temps, lauteur aborde la phonologie du français, cest à dire la prononciation des phonèmes (voyelles et consonnes) ainsi que des syllabes, tout en donnant la manière de les retranscrire à lécrit, autrement dit leurs graphèmes. Dans un second temps, il aborde la morphologie, cest à dire la construction des mots afin de déterminer leur nature grammaticale (noms, adjectifs, verbes etc.), la syntaxe, autrement dit lorganisation des mots au sein dune phrase, ainsi que la sémantique, correspondant au sens des lemmes (ou mots) et plus largement des énoncés (propositions, phrases et groupes de phrases). Enfin, dans un troisième temps, il détaille longuement la flexion verbale, cest à dire ce qui exprime la personne, le temps, l'aspect, le mode et la voix, par des désinences (ou terminaisons) et des auxiliaires. Third revised and enlarged edition (EO: 1633) of this very rare French grammar of this period, by Antoine Oudin (1595-1653), French linguist, interpreter and secretary to kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. French grammars published at this time, meaning before the creation of the Académie Française in 1634 and whose first dictionary only appeared in 1694, are very rare and we have not found a copy of this grammar sold in the last 50 years. Antoine Oudin was the son of César Oudin, who was an interpreter himself and secretary to Henry IV. During his life, Antoine Oudin, above all a romanist, which means a specialist in Romance languages such as French or Italian, was at times a translator, a lexicographer, in other words the writer of dictionaries and even grammars, but also a writer. During a trip to Italy, he befriended Pope Urban VIII with whom he perfected his knowledge of the Italian language. Towards the end of his life, in 1651, he gave Italian lessons to Louis XIV. Thus, Oudin wrote several works of linguistics and bilingual dictionaries among which one can quote: "Curiosités françoises, pour servir de complément aux dictionnaires, ou recueil de plusieurs belles propriétés, avec une infinité de proverbes et de quolibets pour l'explication de toutes sortes de livres" (Paris, 1640), "Recherches italiennes et françoises, ou Dictionnaire contenant outre les mots ordinaires, une quantité de proverbes et de phrases pour l'intelligence de l'une & l'autre langue. Avec un abrégé de grammaire italienne" (Paris 1640), "Trésor des deux langues espagnole et françoise, ou dictionnaire espagnol-françois et françois-espagnol" (Paris 1645) or the present work, "Grammaire françoise rapportée au langage du temps" (Paris 1633). It is important to remember that the latter, Oudin's first work on the French language, predates the foundation of the famous Académie Française, founded in 1634 by Cardinal Richelieu. In fact, it was an important reference for the work of the first academicians which would lead to the "Dictionnaire de l'Académie française", the first edition of which was published in 1694 and the ninth of which is currently being written. With regard to dictionaries and grammars, there are two possible approaches to dealing with a language: the prescriptive approach, which aims to impose a usage deemed correct, or the descriptive approach, which seeks to describe the different usages in all their diversity without trying to impose one instead of the others. Although Oudin's approach is mainly prescriptive, he does sometimes address other attested uses. However, his objective is still to lay down the rules for what he considers to be good practice of the French language, and his work is more of a prescriptive approach. The language in question "Francien", which was spoken in an extended region around the Île-de-France and a dialectal variety of the Langue d'Oïl. The latter was spoken for several centuries in the northern half of the current territory of metropolitan France, with the exception of Brittany, Alsace and Lorraine, but also in the south of the current territory of Belgium (Wallonia). This language took shape from the middle of the Middle Ages and gradually disappeared after the revolution of 1789 to become French as it is spoken today, the latter being mostly inherited from Francian. At that time, because Francien was the dialect of the king and his court, but also of famous authors of literature, it imposed itself and replaced little by little Latin, which was preferred for a long time for writing, in particular in sciences and by the Church, and which was to remain for a long time after. With the ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts (1539), the king François I wanted legal and administrative writings to be written in "langue françoise". By "langue françoise", today called "langue française", and even if the term has been used to refer to the entire langue d'Oïl, it means more precisely the Francien dialect. This was only about the written language, the aim was neither to forbid the use of other dialects of the langue d'Oïl, nor that of the langue d'Oc, spoken in the southern part of the current metropolitan France, nor even the use of other regional languages. Thus, at the request of successive kings, several authors tried to set out the rules of good French. This desire for standardization in order to use French instead of Latin in a certain number of domains resulted in the creation of the Académie Française. Oudin's approach in this book is a perfect example of this will. In the first part, the author deals with the phonology of French, that is to say the pronunciation of the phonemes (vowels and consonants) as well as the syllables, while giving the way to transcribe them in writing, in other words their graphemes. In a second step, he deals with morphology, i.e. the construction of words in order to determine their grammatical nature (nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.), syntax, i.e. the organization of words within a sentence, as well as semantics, corresponding to the meaning of lemmas (or words) and more generally of statements (clauses, sentences and groups of sentences). Finally, in the third part, he goes into great detail about verbal inflection, i.e. what expresses person, tense, aspect, mode and voice, by means of disinences (or terminations) and auxiliaries. A well-preserved copy in its contemporary binding of this very complete and rare grammar of the "French language", prior to the creation of the Académie Française, by a Romanist, interpreter and secretary to the king.‎
