‎Indian Territory: N.p. 1892. Folio of eleven unbound sheets forty-four pages measuring approximately 6 x 8 inches. Marginal damage and fading to text; excellent. Amory Nelson Chamberlin 1821–1894 was born on Brainerd Mission in what is now Chattanooga Tennessee the son and grandson of missionaries. Fluent in both English and Cherokee Chamberlin worked as an interpreter and served under General Stand Watie in the Confederate States Army.1 After the war Chamberlin established the Pheasant Hill Mission near Vinita Indian Territory with Reverend Hamilton Balentine preaching in Cherokee and English.2

Offered here is a Cherokee-language version of the Shorter Catechism translated by Chamberlin. The Cherokee written language is a syllabary—a writing system in which symbols represent whole syllables—developed in the early 19th century by Sequoyah a Cherokee leader and inventor. It was one of the first writing systems for an Indigenous American language and significantly increased Cherokee literacy within a short time of its adoption in the 1820s.3

We find fifteen copies of Chamberlin’s catechism in OCLC. ‎Mahlasinyane. Typed by Victor Moloi‎

‎Mazenod Basutoland Lesotho: Catholic Centre N.d. ca. 1950s. No statement of edition or printing. Quarto; stapled sheets with cloth tape spine 46pp. Slight dusting to covers else Fine. Text entirely in Sesotho.

A fictional text for juvenile readers likely written with pedagogic intent. From our admittedly amateur attempts at translation the tale revolves around the adventures of Mahlasinyane the son of a farmer who one day in a fit of adolescent pique runs away from home so that he may "do as he pleases." We have not read further but given the source of publication one may infer that a series of Christian moral allegories follow. OCLC notes three copies in North America and one other in South Africa; UCLA cataloguing gives the dates as "1970" almost certainly in error as Basutoland was officially renamed Lesotho in 1966. ‎MONTYON, ANTOINE JEAN BAPTISTE ROBERT AUGET, BARON DE (1733-1820), French philanthropist, was born in Paris on the 23rd of December 1733. His father was a maf ire des comptes; he was educated for the law, and became advocate at the Chtelet in 1755, master of requests to the council of state in 1760, and intendant successively of Auvergne, Provence and La Rochelle. He had repeatedly shown great independence of character, protesting against the accusation of Caradeuc de La Chalotais in 1766, and refusing in 1771 to suppress the local courts of justice in obedience to Maupeou. He was made a councillor of state in 1775 by the influence of Louis de Bourbon, duke of Penthivre, and in 1780 he was attached to the court in the honorary office of chancellor to the comte d Artois (afterwards Charles X.). He followed the princes into exile, and lived for some years in London. During the emigration period he spent large sums on the alleviation of the poverty of his fellow immigrants, returning to France only at the second restoration. Between 1780 and 1787 he had founded a series of prizes, the awards to be made by the French academy and the academies of science and medicine. These prizes fell into abeyance during the revolutionary period, but were re-established in 1815. Montyon died on the 29th of December 1820, bequeathing io,ooo francs for the perpetual endowment of each of the following prizes: for the discovery of the means of rendering some mechanical process less dangerous to the workman; for the perfecting of any technical improvement in a mechanical process; for the book which during the year rendered the greatest service to humanity; the prix de vertu for the most courageous act on the part of a poor Frenchmanthe awards being left as before to the learned academies. Montyon wrote a series of works, chiefly on political economy: Eloge de Michel de lhpital (Paris, 1777); Recherches et considerations sur la population de la France (1778), a share of which is attributed to his secretary, Moheau; Rapport fail a Louis XVIII. (Constance, 1796), in which he maintained in opposition to Calonnes Tableau de lEurope that France had always possessed a constitution, which had, however, been violated by the kings of France; Letat statistique du Tunkin (1811); and Particularites . .
