THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA; The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
University of California Press. 1993. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Minor shelfwear to DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned.; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. . 0520076850 . Munson, Rosaria Vignolo
TELLING WONDERS; Ethnographic and Political Discourse in the Work of Herodotus
University of Michigan Press. 2001. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Book has very minor shelfwear else fine pencil bibliography notes to ffep. DJ has 1 closed tear 2 cm to front panel and light creasing.; As he explores the causes of the East-West conflict from its most remote antecedents Herodotus includes conflicting traditions about different historical periods as well as apparently tangential descriptions of the customs of faraway peoples. What was his aim in combining such diverse material Rosaria Vignolo Munson argues that Herodotus' aim was two-fold: to use historical narrative to illuminate the present and to describe barbarian customs so that the Greeks might understand themselves. Herodotus assumes the role of advisor to his audience acting as a master of metaphor and oracular speech and as an intellectual fully aware of new philosophical and political trends. By comparing interpreting and evaluating facts through time and space or simply by pointing them out as objects of "wonder" he teaches that correct political action is linked to an appropriate approach to foreigners and additional "others." Munson relies on traditional scholarship and modern studies in narratology and related critical fields to distinguish between narrative and metanarrative providing a framework for analyzing the construction of Herodotus' discourse and his presentation of himself through it.; 325 pages . 0472112031 .

MYTHICAL AND LEGENDARY NARRATIVE IN OVID'S FASTI
Brill. 2005. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Gift inscription to R. E. Fantham from author on ffep includes tipped-in note from author. Dust-soiling to one small area of textblock.; This book analyses the mythical and legendary narratives in Ovid's Fasti as narrative and concentrates on the neglected literary aspects of these stories. It combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques taken especially from narratology and intertextuality. From a narratological viewpoint it covers important features such as aperture closure characterization internal narrators description space time and cinematic technique. On the intertextual level it examines the narratives' complex relationship with Virgil Livy and Ovid's own earlier works. Recent criticism on the Fasti has addressed various elements religious historical political astronomical etc. but detailed narrative study has been wanting. This book fills that gap to provide a more informed and balanced appreciation of this multifaceted poem aimed at classicists and literary critics in general for whom all the Latin is translated.; Mnemosyne: Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 306 pages; Signed by Author . 9004143203 .
