Long title is "Histoire des faits et gestes dan les r�gions d'outre-mer depuis le temps des successeurs de Mahomet jusqu'a l'an 1184 de J�sus-Christ" or in the original Latin "Historia rerum in partibus transmarinus gestarum." This is a history of the Crusades by William Archbishop of Tyre. Before becoming Archbishop William had been Archdeacon had served as a diplomat for King Amaury Amalric I and had been the teacher of Amaury's son Baudouin Baldwin IV who acceded to the throne at the age of thirteen. For sources William had access to manuscripts no longer in existence previous histories which appear in other volumes of this series and was personally involved or knew those personally involved in events in the final third of his history. Guizot includes those portions of Book II which deal with the state & mores of the West while omitting those dealing solely with specific religious orders and with theological controversy. Book III describes events that Jacques himself witnessed or was involved in and while many editors doubt its authenticity it matches in many particulars a letter he wrote to friends upon the taking of Damiette. William a monk of Jumi�ge retold the earlier history of Normandy written by Dudo then appended a history of his own times beginning with the accession of Duke Richard III followed by his brother Robert father of the Conqueror. He carried the narrative on to King Henry I of England son of the Conqueror although there are doubts about the authorship of later parts of this history. William of Poitiers served as the Conqueror's chaplain. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th Ed. 1911 the extant portion of Poitiers' chronicle "is valuable for details of the Conqueror's life although untrustworthy with regard to affairs in England. Orderic becomes of some use to the historian beginning with his account of William the Conqueror and is one of the main authorities for events from 1082 through 1141.
