‎Translations medievales : cinq siecles de traductions en francais (xie-xve siecle) a ete elabore par trois laboratoires francais : Centre d'Etudes Superieures de Civilisation Medievale (CNRS - Universite de Poitiers) ; Etudes et editions de textes du Moyen Age (CNRS - Universite de la Sorbonne) ; Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes (CNRS Paris) - associes sous la direction du CESCM dans un projet qui a ete officiellement reconnu par l'Agence National de la Recherche (ANR). Les clercs medievaux ont sauvegarde tout un pan des savoirs du passe, en les copiant dans les premiers siecles, puis en les translatant en latin, et dans les langues vernaculaires a partir du XIe siecle. Mais on ne connaissait pas jusqu'ici la veritable penetration de ces textes, leur diffusion, leur influence sur la langue et la culture francaises. On connaissait moins encore l'impact des autres langues vernaculaires sur les langues gallo-romanes et sur la langue d'oil en particulier ; on savait tres peu de l'interpenetration entre langue d'oc et langue d'oil. On ne possedait pas une vue d'ensemble sur les traductions concernant les sciences. C'est de ce constat d'insuffisance, de cette conscience que par-dela ce qui a ete sans doute definitivement perdu, le premier obstacle a la comprehension de la genese de la culture et de la sciences francaises, et dans une certaine mesure de l'Europe occidentale, venait de la segmentation des informations dont dispose la communaute scientifique, qu'est ne le projet de mettre en reseau les connaissances individuelles et disciplinaires. Transmedie est un corpus bibliographique et analytique des traductions dans les langues gallo-romanes qui propose a travers son repertoire, se trois annexes et son volume d'eclairages critiques une histoire pratiques et des theories de la traduction. Le corpus bibliographique recense, ordonne et etudie les informations philologiques sur les oeuvres traduites en francais entre le XIe et le XVe siecle. Tous les domaines de la civilisation antique et medievale sont concernes par le corpus : droit, grammaire, hagiographie, histoire, litterature, philosophie, science, theologie. Plus de 1 200 oeuvres-sources, relevant d'une dizaine de langues de l'Atlantique et du Haut et du Bas Moyen Age, environ 2 800 traductions, une dizaine de milliers de references bibliographique concernant les manuscrits, plus de 600 incunables medievaux, ont ainsi ete etudies et classes par des specialistes francais et internationaux. L'histoire de ces translations ainsi que celle non moins interessante de la traduction empechee, que le repertoire dessine en creux, permet egalement de mieux eclairer par-dela les frontieres des langues les caracteristiques des autres idiomes et cultures medievales. Car, comme le rappelle Derrida, ? Traduire, au Moyen Age comme aujourd'hui, signifie avant tout ecrire, et ecrire au seuil de deux monolinguismes ? . Sans l'expliciter vraiment, les ecrivains medievaux reflechissent deja a la question que posera quelques siecles plus tard Walter Benjamin : ? une traduction peut-elle etre faite pour les lecteurs qui ne comprennent pas l'original ? Ceux qui s'etaient imagines en nains juches sur les epaules de ces geants de l'Atlantique qu'ils translataient n'ont certes pas pousse si loin la provocation, mails ils se sont interroges sur le sens et la portee de la translatio, sur sa necessite et sa gratuite, sur ses beneficiaires directes et indirectes, sur la difficulte d'un ars qui est deja un opus. La logique dont s'inspire Transmedie est la meme, mais l'ordre du processus est inverse : le trois volets du projet (volume d'etudes, corpus et base en ligne) constitueront le socle sur lequel pourra s'edifier d'une maniere plus ample la connaissance progressive de la translatio studii. The fifteen contributions discuss the use of the different vernaculars and Latin in both literary and non-literary contexts, showing how cultural and social factors determined the choice of language for a particular purpose or type of text. The role of French in non-French contexts is a major theme of these essays: in the British Isles after the Norman Conquest, in Italy as a response to the need for mainly secular types of literature which did not exist in Italian, and in the Low Countries by virtue of geographic contiguity and change of rulers. Reading a variety of texts centred in the power and agency of women during the period 1385 to 1620, this book examines changing ideals of gender within the context of changing ideologies of governance and polity. Together the essays that comprise this book lay out three lines of thinking about women and polity: that the ideology of late medieval gender roles articulated in Anglo-French texts of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries outlined important roles for women?s voice and agency in supporting the larger polity as well as the smaller household; that the acceptance and the value of those roles diminished as models of polity in both Church and State in England changed in the early modern period; that to see this change merely in terms of change in expectations of gender roles is to miss the vital link between the status of women and the political construction of individual relationship to authority. Woman is the site on which society delineates the degree of freedom and independence it will tolerate in the political subject. The attention directed to women?s roles in the plethora of woman-centred stories, courtesy books, prayer books, sermons and tracts in the period 1385-1620 is an index to shifting alignments of power that replaced medieval models of partnership and co-operation with models of obedience. The lives cover a wide range of hagiographic modes, from hagiographic romance to affective, devotional appreciation to doctrinal treatise in narrative form. From the life of Jerome, composed by a monk for his aristocratic spiritual daughter, to the life of Katherine, reputedly translated for Henry V, to those of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, which set their subjects in a recognizably Birgittine context, they show the interaction of men and women, lay and monastic, in the production of devotional literature. The diversity of their approaches and sources, moreover, shows the links between English dynastic politics and continental religious literature and spiritual traditions. As examples of translation practices, of monastic politics, and of religious instruction, these lives provide a window onto the devotional culture and literary worlds of fifteenth-century Europe.
