8vo. 8 pages. Text is in German. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a description of Poland's Swietokrzyskie Mountains, also known as the Holy Cross mountains, also of the contemporary administrative 'Radomski' division of the Polish Duchy of Warsaw (the Radom Department), and of the 14th century Sandomierz Voivodeship. Commentary includes the ancient sacred mountain Lysa Gora, and several towns including Radom, Staszów, Krakow, Opatow, Pilica, Wislica, Pinczów, drawing on writings by Polish philosopher and politician Józef Kalasanty Szaniawski, specifically "Korespondencja w materiach obraz kraju i narodu polskiego rozjas'niajacych". These are the original pages printed in 1813, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.

Former owner's label on front fixed endpaper: Captain Wm. C. Rawolle 2nd U.S. Cavalry. William Charles Rawolle born in Prussia in or about 1841 joined the Union Army in June 1862 and was commissioned as a captain. He distinguished himself at the battles of South Mountain and Antietam in Sept. 1862 while serving as aide-de-camp to Brigadier-General Samuel D. Sturgis commander of the 2nd Division 9th Army Corps. Sturgis praised Rawolle: "He was invaluable at all times carrying orders placing the artillery in favorable positions bringing up ammunition and making himself useful in every department." Rawolle accompanied Sturgis out west and then to Tennessee and participated in the fighting in Jan. 1864 around Dandridge Tenn. again garnering high praise from Sturgis. On 6 June 1868 Rawolle was commissioned a 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd Regiment U.S. Cavalry and by 1876 he held the rank of 1st Lieut. Co. B 2nd Cavalry but was transferred that month to Co. K 2nd Cavalry. He participated in the Souix Wars and by 1880 he was married and stationed at Fort Custer Montana. He died on June 10 1895 at Brooklyn NY. In Very Good Condition: edges lightly rubbed; small nick out of marbled paper over front board along lower edge; shadow in upper right-hand corner of title page from bookdealer's label on facing page; small pencilled checks in margins of a few pages; otherwise pages are clean and tight. A very scarce book on the German cavalry by military writer Fritz Hoenig with an interesting American military provenance. Friedrich Luckhardt hardcover

Dark blue publisher's cloth with gilt-stamped spine titles and cover titles and cover illustration. All page edges blue. Endpapers are dark blue with a silver pattern. Striking Art Nouveau book design by Tanna Hoernes. Volumes 1 and 2 were published in 1911 volume 3 in 1912. In addition to the plates includes many full-page and in-text illustrations and maps. Entirely in German. Vol. 1 title page has circular stamp of the Vienna Staatsarchiv Kriegsarchiv at head and "Nachlass Mjr. Franz Schorn" written at the foot. Vol. 2 title page is stamped at the head "Österreichischer Aero-Club" with "Nachlass Hermann Hold Wien" written above several other pages also have the stamp of the Österreichischer Aero-Club; also on the title page is a small oval stamp of a bookseller in Vienna. In Very Good Condition: corners are bumped and rubbed; vols 1 and 2 corners are slightly frayed and back joints are starting to separate from tail; covers are slightly soiled and rubbed; one plate in vol. 2 is detached but present lower edge creased with 1-cm. tear not touching image; otherwise pages and plates are clean and tight. A fascinating and heavily illustrated history of flight up to immediately prior to the First World War. A very heavy set that will require extra shipping. G. Szelinski, k.k.
