‎Interest in the content of this book has developed out of an examination of the prompter who operated in full view of the audience and offered all the lines to the players. In 2001 at Groningen a production of the Towneley Second Shepherds? Play focused on an examination of this convention. Many of the audience responses then were concerned with the figure of the prompter as he was seen to operate simultaneously both 'inside' and 'outside' the action of the play. Such a role and its function is fascinating, not only in its own right, but also in relation to how it might inform us about the nature and purpose of presented theatre. The ability of such a figure to move in and out of the action, and thus different realities, characterizes a relationship to the action and the audience. The same fascination exists in relation to roles of the narrator and the expositor. Sometimes these roles are overt ones; sometimes they 'double up' with roles of actors, personages or characters. These figures are of pivotal significance in the communication of those plays in which they operate. ‎In the nineteenth and early-twentieth century it was assumed that nearly all agricultural labourers in medieval Europe were serfs. Serfdom was distinct from slavery in that serfs were recognized as something more than chattels. They could contract legitimate marriages, hold personal property and they could not be moved around at will. The fact that serfs were in many regions a minority of the peasant population, and the increasing importance given to social and economic circumstances over legal definitions led historians to move away from examining servile condition and its implications during much of the late twentieth century. Attention has instead focused on the seigneurial regime and village society with little regard for the influence of status. In the Middle Ages and indeed in all pre-industrial societies, the vast majority of the population tilled the land. We are still not in a good position to evaluate how noble and ecclesiastical landlords received revenues from lands they were only indirectly engaged in farming, thus there are important gaps in our knowledge of the basic factors that governed medieval society. What kind of agricultural system provided the impetus for economic growth that so dramatically increased the number of cities and volume of trade? There is no modern, synthetic book on medieval serfdom that compares regions or draws general conclusions about it. This work attempts such a synthesis and also shows avenues of future research, but most importantly it is intended to reorient attention to the importance of serfdom in the structure of medieval society. ‎Psychopathology and pictorial expression, an international iconographical collection, series 8. The 13 Paintings by Depressives, 1little booklet + 12 plate in one map, good condition with lightspotting of the map. This fascinating series of colour prints with accompanying commentary and analysis by leading psychiatrists was originally published by Sandoz Ltd in the early 1960s. They are loosely contained in a white folder, inside which, from the second series onwards, is the imprint of their product Melleril. We think that there were 25 editions of the series and some are more scarce than others. They were subsequently published by S Karger of Basel as 4 collections. Volume 1 (Series 1-6)(1966) Volume 2 (Series 7-12)(1967) Volume 3 (Series 13-18)(1973) and Volume 4 (Series 19-22 and 25)(1978). All these editions are out of print, although the latter one is comparatively widely available in the antiquarian book market for around $100US. The item described here is one of the original sets, having previously belonged to a psychiatrist working at the time. They each consist of a number of 31x23 cm card prints (see individual description for number) and a commentary of up to 8 pages. The author specified in the title is the author of the commentary. The artists of the individual works are not credited for their intellectual or physical property. The collections are remarkable in this day and age for the confident assertions by the commentators of the distinctions between 'art' and 'pathology'. It is difficult to assess from reading them what each author knows about either. Some of the narrative of the difficult personal and environmental circumstance of the artists is of enormous interest to the art and medicine historian. We thought about displaying the images to illuminate our website, but feel that without the permission of the artists we would be compounding the legal breach made by the original publishers PsychoBabel Books and Journals offers these for sale without any claims that Melleril may improve your painting technique, or make your expressiveness classifiable as 'normal' by a 1960s vintage psychiatrist, or whether it will make you give up painting altogether. The dreadful effects of long-term involuntary consumption of Thioridazine make it difficult to walk and speak, never mind paint. ‎Glossing was a scribal practice in use since antiquity, but it was in the Middle Ages that it acquired a wider meaning and a different role, becoming one of the most widespread forms of literacy in the Germanic West, including the British Isles. Most of the essays collected in this volume focus on the late Anglo-Saxon period, that is a well-identified time-frame spanning from the Benedictine Reform to the eleventh century. As recent scholarship has convincingly established, the second half of the tenth century and the beginning of the eleventh saw the blooming of Anglo-Saxon scholarship and a remarkable advance in educational practices. Within this cultural resurgence, glossing undoubtedly played no small role and was particularly vital in centres such as Abingdon, Canterbury, and Winchester. In the contributions to the present volume, the relationship between glosses and the text they accompany is always explored on the basis of their manuscript context. The essays are devoted to both Latin and Old English apparatuses of glosses as well as to specific items of the Old Norse and Old Saxon glossarial production.‎

Yet in spite of its importance in Western intellectual history and its capacity to excite many generations of students and teachers, the Sentences has received little attention in more recent times. Indeed, it has been called 'one of the least read of the world's great books'. This volume makes available for the first time in English a full translation of Book 1 of the Sentences. It consists of forty-eight Distinctions, the bulk of which deal with God in his transcendence and with the mystery of the Trinity. The person of God the Father is the topic in Distinction iv, that of God the Son in v-ix, that of God the Holy Spirit in x-xviii. Distinctions xix-xxxiv are deeply concerned with the language that can be used in describing the Trinity and the relations among the divine persons. The remaining distinctions deal with the divine attributes as they become manifest in God's action towards creatures. An important concern is the preservation of God's sovereign freedom and the avoidance of any confusion regarding the absolute transcendence of God, despite his graceful self-disclosure in creation and revelation. The Book concludes with eight Distinctions on the last things ' the resurrection of the body, purgation, hell, the last judgement, and eternity.‎
