Alexandros o Makedonas : O Megas Stratelates Tis Istorias 356-323 p.x.
Athens: Dioptra 2014 Until recently popular biographers and most scholars viewed Alexander the Great as a genius with a plan a romantic figure pursuing his vision of a united world. His dream was at times characterized as a benevolent interest in the brotherhood of man sometimes as a brute interest in the exercise of power. Green a Cambridge-trained classicist who is also a novelist portrays Alexander as both a complex personality and a single-minded general a man capable of such diverse expediencies as patricide or the massacre of civilians. Green describes his Alexander as "not only the most brilliant and ambitious field commander in history but also supremely indifferent to all those administrative excellences and idealistic yearnings foisted upon him by later generations especially those who found the conqueror tout court a little hard upon their liberal sensibilities."This biography begins not with one of the universally known incidents of Alexander's life but with an account of his father Philip of Macedonia whose many-territoried empire was the first on the continent of Europe to have an effectively centralized government and military. What Philip and Macedonia had to offer Alexander made his own but Philip and Macedonia also made Alexander form an important context for understanding Alexander himself. Yet his origins and training do not fully explain the man. After he was named hegemon of the Hellenic League many philosophers came to congratulate Alexander but one was conspicuous by his absence: Diogenes the Cynic an ascetic who lived in a clay tub.Piqued and curious Alexander himself visited the philosopher who when asked if there was anything Alexander could do for him made the famous reply "Don't stand between me and the sun." Alexander's courtiers jeered but Alexander silenced them: "If I were not Alexander I would be Diogenes." This remark was as unexpected in Alexander as it would be in a modern leader. For the general reader the book redolent with gritty details and fully aware of Alexander's darker side offers a gripping tale of Alexander's career. Full backnotes fourteen maps and chronological and genealogical tables serve readers with more specialized interests. Reissue. French Wraps. New Book from Greece. Illus. by Trans. Michalis Delengos. Dioptra paperback

University of California Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 0520203259 . Light edgewear. Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. ; Hellenistic Culture & Society No 9; 0.9 x 8.8 x 6 Inches; 293 pages; In a 1988 conference American and British scholars unexpectedly discovered that their ideas were converging in ways that formed a new picture of the variegated Hellenistic mosaic. That picture emerges in these essays and eloquently displays the breadth of modern interest in the Hellenistic Age. A distrust of all ideologies has altered old views of ancient political structures and feminism has also changed earlier assessments. The current emphasis on multiculturalism has consciously deemphasized the Western Greco-Roman tradition and Nubians Bactrians and other subject peoples of the time are receiving attention in their own right not just as recipients of Greco-Roman culture. History like Herakleitos' river never stands still. These essays share a collective sense of discovery and a sparking of new ideas--they are a welcome beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age. . THE GRECO-PERSIAN WARS
University of California Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1998. Softcover. 0520203135 . Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. Faint crease to spine. Else fine. ; The long and bitter struggle between the great Persian Empire and the fledgling Greek states reached its high point with the extraordinary Greek victory at Salamis in 480 B. C. The astonishing sea battle banished forever the specter of Persian invasion and occupation. Peter Green brilliantly retells this historic moment evoking the whole dramatic sweep of events that the Persian offensive set in motion. The massive Greek victory despite the Greeks' inferior numbers opened the way for the historic evolution of the Greek states in a climate of creativity independence and democracy one that provided a model and an inspiration for centuries to come. Green's accounts of both Persian and Greek strategies are clear and persuasive; equally convincing are his everyday details regarding the lives of soldiers statesmen and ordinary citizens. IMAGES OF THE GREEK THEATRE
British Museum Publications. Very Good. 1995. Softcover. 0714122076 . Gift inscription from Eric Handley to G. P. Goold and Philippa Goold on ffep. Light foxing to top of textblock. ; Classical Bookshelf; 127 pages; Classical Greek theatre survives not only in plays that we still read and perform but also in artistic images. Depictions of performances actors and their masks were frequent in classical times and continued to appear even beyond the fifth and sixth centuries A. D. long after the plays had ceased to be staged. These artifacts together with the remains of actual theatres and the texts of surviving plays give us an idea of how Greek drama must have appeared in its heyday. In this book Richard Green and Eric Handley outline the history of the Greek theatre drawing on the evidence supplied by the theatres themselves the surviving plays and artistic artifacts. They show and discuss painted pottery notably from fifth-century Athens and fourth-century southern Italy that records scenes from plays. Terra-cotta figures mosaics paintings metalware and gems also help them build a picture of Greek theatre. All these artifacts tell the story of Greek drama as seen through the eyes of those admirers who kept its classic moments and traditions alive and who found a place for it in the society of their own times. They help the modern playgoer and reader to imagine what a visit to the theatre in classical Greece might have been like. ; Signed by One Author . British Museum Publications paperback

The contributions include: new editions of Middle English texts; an overview of the editions of Chaucer from the nineteenth century to the present which expounds editorial trends through the years; studies of major Middle English writings which cross boundaries into social history and the history of the book; a codicological study of the literary and material evidence for the use of scientific and utilitarian texts in late medieval English manuscripts; and related historical studies. Speech Crime And The Uses Of Language
Cary North Carolina: Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket. 1989. First Printing. Hard Cover. 0195057996 . 006438: Printing Number Line 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 . Dustjacket now protected by a new Brodart Mylar Cover. Top edge of dustjacket has small stain on inside. Scarce Out Of Print Book. "In this book Greenawalt explores the three-way relationship between the idea of freedom of speech the law of crimes and the many uses of language. He begins by considering free speech as a political principle and after a thorough and incisive analysis of the justifications commonly advanced for freedom of speech looks at the kinds of communications to which the principle of free speech applies. He then turns to an examination of communications for which criminal liability is fixed. Focusing on threats and solicitations to crime Greenawalt attempts to determine whether liability for such communications seriously conflicts with freedom of speech. In the second half of the book he goes on to develop the significance of his conclusions for American constitutional law addressing such questions as what should be considered "speech" within the meaning of the First Amendment and what tests the courts should employ in deciding whether particular criminal statutes should be held constitutional. He concludes that the issues are too complex to yield simple solutions and insists that the protection of the First Amendment can be reduced neither to one justification nor to one all-purpose test of coverage.
