‎Summary The Pore Caitif is an anonymous late fourteenth-century manual of devotion and religious instruction destined for a lay readership. The text, in its various forms, circulated widely and was evidently very popular, as the fifty of so extant manuscripts and fragments readily attest. Of them, no fewer that twenty-eight transmit a full text showing remarkable fidelity to the now presumably lost archetype. As such, the Pore Caitif invites comparison with the considerable production and diffusion of religious texts in English which figure prominently in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In this respect, it is to note that some critics have argued for the presence of Lollard interpolators or commentators in a number of the extant manuscripts, including the influence of the Wycliffite Bible translation. This edition will be published in two volumes. This, the first, provides a full Introduction to the manuscripts and their transmission, classifying them in groups, while examining some of the trends observable in some of the more notable variants they inevitably preserve. A commentary on the text is followed by a full glossary. The second volume will discuss manuscript relationships and the problems arising therefrom. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a contemporary analysis of the first German translation, by Karl Ludwig Methusalen Müller, of the first edition of Claude Robin's now classic French title , 'Voyages dans l'intérieur de la Louisiane, de la Floride occidentale, et dans les isles de la Martinique et de Saint-Domingue, pendant les années 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805 et 1806.' In itself a fascinating essay contemporary to slave revolts and the Louisiana Purchase, including statistics on slavery, passages are drawn from both the French and German editions, making this a unique item to pair with the collector's volume. Claude C. Robin traveled with his son in Louisiana and in the Caribbean from 1802 to 1806, recording his observations of the rebellion and the subsequent settlement of the refugees in Louisiana. In his 3 volume work, he gave an excellent account of Louisiana's western interior and of Spanish Texas, including natural history and agriculture, the French inhabitants of the area, Louisiana's new American government, geographical delineations, conflicts with Spain, and other civil and political issues. The Louisiana Purchase (Vente de la Louisiane) was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,800 square miles of the French territory Louisiane in 1803. Robin was present at ceremonies turning Louisiana over to the United States, both in New Orleans and in Natchitoches. He published his account in 1807. The subsequent German translation by Müller, discussed here, was published in 1808. These are the original pages printed in 1809, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.‎
