Couldn't Keep It to Myself: Testimonies from Our Imprisoned Sisters
New York New York U.S.A.: Regan Books 2004. Book. Very Good. Trade Paperback. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Very-good condition. NO remainder marks or clippings. Light-yellow highlighting present throughout book. Does NOT interfere with reading. NO tears inside book. Illustrated throughout. 352 pages. Covers show slight wear NO tears. Synopsis: In a stunning work of insight and hope New York Times bestselling author Wally Lamb once again reveals his unmatched talent for finding humanity in the lost and lonely and celebrates the transforming power of the written word. For several years Lamb has taught writing to a group of women prisoners at York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. In this unforgettable collection the women of York describe in their own words how they were imprisoned by abuse rejection and their own self-destructive impulses long before they entered the criminal justice system. Yet these are powerful stories of hope and healing told by writers who have left victimhood behind. In his moving introduction Lamb describes the incredible journey of expression and self-awareness the women took through their writing and shares how they challenged him as a teacher and as a fellow author. Couldn't Keep It to Myself is a true testament to the process of finding oneself and working toward a better day. The Los Angeles Times: One truth this book affirms is the capacity for people to change. The writers of Couldn't Keep It to Myself chart their own journeys of growth navigating the terrain of their internal worlds their pasts and present prison realities. Who they have become is clear both in self-awareness and what they do with their lives teaching others advocacy computer work construction in prison and out. It is in this change that hope resides; lying next to and rising out of despair hope permeates the book. Why in the end does Lamb want us to care about 10 women in prison Perhaps because in noticing the humanity of others we become more human ourselves. Kathy Boudin Biography: Wally Lamb's books are neither short nor simple; but like a James Patterson of emotions he pulls readers in and doesn't let go. His affecting novels are marvels of imagination and empathy. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Regan Books Paperback

THE CLASSICS AND SOUTH AFRICAN IDENTITIES
Duckworth Publishers. Fine. 2011. Softcover. 0715637967 . Classical Diaspora; 256 pages; The teaching and research of the Classics in South Africa are deeply rooted in the racial political and educational inequalities which have characterised the country's turbulent history. Michael Lambert opens three windows on to this history using the creation of identities as his theoretical lens. The foundation of the Classical Association of South Africa in 1956 and the cultural reinforcement of Afrikaner nationalist identity; the deployment of British colonial identity in public discourses about the role of the Classics in apartheid South Africa at an English speaking university; and the exploration of black African identities in response to the teaching of the Classics at missionary institutions where vocational training was locked in combat with a classical education regarded by an educated black elite as the means for upward social mobility in a highly-stratified colonial society. . HOMER'S ANCIENT READERS The Hermeneutics of Greek Epic's Earliest Exegetes
Princeton University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0691069344 . Faint foxing to top of textblock. Light shelfwear to book and DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention little has been written on how various generations of readers have found meaning in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Iliad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time the authors clarify the position of the Iliad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiquity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading. This collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves proceeding to readings by Aristotle the Stoics and Aristarchus and Crates and culminating in the spiritualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C. E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance.
