O'Brien Frank M. Editor
An Outline of The Sun 1833-1927
New York: Sun Printing and Publishing Association 1927. Octavo 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; 215 x 140 mm 11 1 pages in stapled wrappers.

A short history of The Sun founded in New York by Benjamin H. Day in 1833. The Sun was a trendsetter in American journalism according to the media historian Edwin Emery. "Journalism began a new epoch on September 3 1833 with the appearance of a strange little newspaper The New York Sun It Shines for ALL" he writes in The Press and America: An Interpretive History of the Mass Media. "Most of the material was trivial flippant -- but highly readable. Most important it was cheap. Within six months the Sun had a circulation of around 8000 which was nearly twice that of its nearest rival."

The Sun was sold in the street for only a penny and appealed especially to working-class readers with its mix of human-interest stories and emphasis on clear lively sometimes exaggerated storytelling. It was also notable for relying largely on advertising rather than subscriptions for its revenue.

"An Outline of The Sun" features numerous photographs of key people at The Sun through the years including the great editor Charles A. Dana who led the paper and was its owner for 20 years. Its editorial cartoonist Rube Goldberg won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. But perhaps its most famous moment came in 1897 with the publication of a letter from a young girl wanting to know if there is a Santa Claus. That led to one of the most renowned newspaper editorials ever commonly known as "Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus." Oddly though the pamphlet doesn't mention it.

The Sun continued to publish until 1950 when it was folded into the New York World-Telegram.

OCLC shows only 2 institutional holdings at Columbia and the New York Historical Society. None in commerce. RARE.

A short but interesting look at a famous American newspaper known for its emphasis on human-interest storytelling.

CONDITION: Some soiling to the wrappers upper corners bumped upper part of wrappers pulled away from staple small split at bottom of spine. Clean bright and unmarked on the inside pages. About Very Good.

Sun Printing and Publishing Association books

LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS
A Collection of more than 100 Language of Flowers titles published between 1655 and 1897 with one manuscript and one ephemeral item
First or early editions. Various places and publishers 1655-1897 1655. See Beverly Seaton The Language of Flowers A History. University Press of Virginia 1995. A detailed description of the collection is available via pdf on our website at www.brickrow.com on the catalogues page. The Language of Flowers phenomenon flourished for almost eighty years beginning in France in the early 19th century. As both potent and subtle symbols in Western culture flowers are found in religious texts poetry heraldic and emblematic literature from the classical period and early Christianity through medieval literature and the enlightenment. In the early 19th century books were written and published for the first time under titles such as Abécédaire de Flore ou Langage des Fleurs 1811 Oracles de Flore 1816 Emblemes de Flore et des Végéaux 1819 and Le Langage des Fleurs 1819. With those publications the language of flowers and its exploration of floral symbolism in communication - usually as a language of love and romance - gained acceptance and popularity. During its nascent years in France the language of flowers had a relatively limited affluent audience but once publishers saw the potential for profit and obtained the ability to print and illustrate books on a large scale they began to publish language of flowers texts in the popular formats of literary annuals gift books and almanacs. By 1830 the genre was widely available to a new world of fervent book buyers and readers in the working and middle classes. The vogue for language of flowers books was so prevalent that it became the subject of parodies and satires by among others Frederick Marryat and J. J. Grandville. Herman Melville was a devotee of symbolic flower language and referred to it in Mardi and Pierre and poems written to his wife Lizzie. The core of this collection of language of flowers titles was assembled by Doris Ann Elmore a French teacher in San Francisco and lifelong Francophile. The collection is unusual for its scope. The collection is for sale en bloc.

First or early editions. Various places and publishers, 1655-1897 unknown books

An Oration Delivered Before the Mosheimian Society on July 23rd 1795; Being the day Appointed for their Yearly Meeting
Philadelphia: Printed by T. Dobson 175.00. 8vo. 230 x 145 mm. 9 x 5 ¾ inches. 14 pp. Removed from binding; edges of paper a bit chipped spine secured with Japanese paper. "This society was instituted in the year 1780 in the city of Philadelphia for the purpose of keeping up the knowledge of the German language and to preserve it in its purity." Filled with the righteousness of the victorious Shultz echoed the call for a nationalistic spirit in American but cautioned against the loss of the German culture and language that was so important to many citizens of Pennsylvania. The Mosheimian Society was organized in 1789 by Justus Heinrich Christian Helmuth an immigrant from Halle Germany with the goal of creating a comprehensive education system with an emphasis on adult literary skills in the German language and culture. Like most of its members Benjamin Schultz was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He is most remembered as a physician and advocate of vaccination who acted as a circuit rider and itinerant "vaccinator" in Pennsylvania. He petitioned President Madison for an official position that would allow him to travel wherever he was needed to vaccinate the public in any state in the union.
