‎Re-Membering the Present. The Medieval German Poet-Minstrel in Cultural Context,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, XIV+354 p., 4 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503515168.‎

‎This book examines the social and cultural conditions that governed performance art in the German Middle Ages from 1170 to 1400. Poet-performers are central to understanding both literature and performance art because these entertainers, more than any other group, influenced the creation, dissemination, and interpretation of the medieval poetic oeuvre. Performance theory is used as a framework throughout. Since no social history of poet-performers exists in English, part I presents a social history that re-examines what is known about social status, cultural image and employment. Part II investigates the affective nature of performance and focuses on poet-composer-performers. This study argues that the techniques and principles of performance (body movement, gesture, voice modulation, instrumentation) and the goals of creating a memorable, even electrifying experience for audiences determine the performer's lifestyle and also the thematic and rhetorical strategies of their compositions. The itinerant poet-performer presented himself as a moral judge and critic of epoch-making political events. His performances transform time, place and people and thus become a socializing process that can change people's attitudes. Poet-minstrels were capable of re-membering the listeners' memories of the past during the intense present of the performance. Readings of several texts are offered, including romances, the political songs of well-known poet-performers (i.e. Walther von der Vogelweide) and the gnomic poets (Spruchdichter) whose songs have been neglected until now. The songs are quite intricate and multivalent as they masterfully display an aesthetic totally integrated with their performative context. Languages : English.‎

‎Healing the Body Politic. The Political Thought of Christine de Pizan,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, XXII+266 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516363.‎

‎Christine de Pizan (1364-1431) has been recognised as a poet, early humanist and feminist precursor but rarely as political theorist whose works were intended to have a direct impact on the tumultuous politics of her time. The essays in this collection focus on Christine as a political writer and provide an important resource for those wishing to understand her political thought. They locate her political writing in the late medieval tradition, discussing her indebtedness to Aristotle, Aquinas and Augustine as well as her transformations of their thought. They also illuminate Christine's 'political epistemology' her understanding of political wisdom as a part of theology, the knowledge of God. New light is thrown on the circumstances which prompted Christine to write on political issues and on her attitude to Isabeau of Bavaria. These essays show that Christine's originality consisted in her capacity to modify and feminise the tradition of Christian Aristotelianism through the use of elements of Christian imagery, in particular Mariology, in order to construct an image of the virtuous and prudent monarch which had lost the explicitly manly and warlike character of the Aristotelian phronimos. This reconfigured image of the monarch lent itself to the extension which she developed in her more feminist works, which demonstrated the prudence of women and their capacity, in times of need, to function as authoritative political figures. ‎John of Salisbury on Aristotelian Science,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. X+267 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503540993.‎

‎This is the first substantial treatment of John of Salisbury's views on Aristotelian science. In his great work on logic and education, John of Salisbury proposes an Aristotelian foundation for education, research, and science. Theories and methods of science and scholarship were central topics in twelfth-century discourse, and John is apparently the first to propose use of the entire Organon, the texts of which were to become very influential and important in the thirteenth century. However, his precise knowledge and understanding of Aristotle has never been thoroughly examined. The present book challenges the view that John read, understood, and used the entire Organon. It pays particular attention to the Metalogicon, but it draws upon a variety of other sources as well in arguing that John did not in fact study the Ars nova with any care, and that he probably never read the most important text, the Posterior Analytics, in its entirety. The conclusions of the book have important consequences not only for our conception of John of Salisbury, but also for our views and understanding of twelfth-century Aristotelianism and science in general. ‎Princely Virtues in the Middle Ages 1200-1500,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XII+318 p., 1 b/w ill., 2 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516967.‎

‎The contributors to this book examine the diverse roles played by moral virtues in the political writing of the Later Middle Ages. Medieval political thought has a long tradition of scholarship, and its ethical dimension has always received sustained attention. This volume specifically concentrates on the meaning and function of virtues in a political context, a theme which has thus far been neglected. The authors deal with Latin texts (occasionally in combination with vernacular ones) from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries that define, legitimize, or criticize secular rule by using catalogues of virtues, originating from ancient philosophy as well as Christian moral theology. The contributions discuss various aspects related to this theme, such as the relation between the virtues of rulers and general moral precepts; the tension between secular or philosophical perspectives on virtue and Christian moral thought; the use of moral virtues for political ends; the balance between praise of the prince's virtues and criticism of his vices; and so forth. The medieval texts under discussion are of French, German, English, Italian, and Spanish origin, and vary from educational treatises and historiography to moral theology and political philosophy. ‎Law and Theology in Twelfth-Century England. The Works of Master Vacarius (c. 1115/20 - c. 1200),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, X+322 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503517827.‎

‎This book explores the legal and theological thought of Master Vacarius (c.1115/20 - c.1200), the renowned twelfth-century jurist. It focuses on this Italian master's four works, composed in the second half of the twelfth century, which deal with the resolution of conflict in law and theology. Vacarius is a paradox for scholars. They have found it difficult to reconcile his role as a legal teacher, notably through his textbook the Liber pauperum ('Book of the Poor'), which established a school of Roman law at Oxford, with his extra-legal' works on marriage, Christology and heretical theology. This study accounts for this paradox by exploring these three extra-legal treatises, composed in the 1160s and 1170s, in light of Vacarius' legal textbook. The author argues that Vacarius applies the legal method of the ius commune (European common law) to theological and sacramental debates. In this way, Vacarius represents a trend in medieval intellectual history, particular to the twelfth-century renaissance, which has been little appreciated to date - the hermeneutic of the 'lawyer-theologian'. ‎Sapientia et eloquentia. Meaning and Function in Liturgical Poetry, Music, Drama, and Biblical Commentary in the Middle Ages,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XIV+558 p., 16 b/w ill., 3 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503520575.‎

‎This book thrusts the reader into the intellectual turmoil of medieval Europe. In interrelated studies of largely unexplored material dating from the ninth through to the fourteenth centuries, the contributors explore changes in functions and forms of liturgical poetry and music, and of biblical interpretation. Although the twelfth century constitutes the main focus, the phenomena dealt with here had roots in earlier times and remained in circulation in later centuries. The cultural heritage of the Carolingian intellectuals tied to the palace school of Charles the Bald is examined in a liturgical context. Forms and ideas from this period were reused and transformed in the twelfth century, as represented here by sequences, tropes, Abelard?s poetry, the Gloss to Lamentations, and ritual representations or ?liturgical drama?. The two final chapters treat fourteenth-century uses and understandings of Boethius?s De institutione musica and the new genre of sequence commentaries, both dealing with later medieval views on music theory and liturgical poetry from an earlier period, thus connecting the end of the book to its beginning. The sections are interspersed with philosophical reflections on overriding themes of the contributions. The volume concludes with an anthology of poetic texts in Latin with English translations and musical transcriptions. Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Mortality and Imagination. The Life of the Dead in Medieval English Literature,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XIII+304 p., 11 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503524313.‎

‎More than any single volume has so far attempted, Mortality and Imagination is devoted to the history and literary 'life' of the dead in medieval writing. There have been many books on the medieval culture of death, but this book is the first devoted to the use and representation of the dead in English medieval writing. Mortality and Imagination is a history of the literary 'life' of the dead - in their narrative, aesthetic, and ideological formulation - a theme which up to now has been explored only fragmentarily, available only in studies of particular genres. Kenneth Rooney's book explores a wider range of texts and genres than has been attempted before, and reads the vernacular representation of the dead against the impact of one of the most intriguing cultural phenomena of the Middle Ages - the macabre - a rhetorical and artistic idiom designed to evoke the dead at their most horrifying. Tracing the models for the representation of the dead available to English writers, he offers fresh readings of texts both familiar and neglected, including sermons, tale collections, romances, drama, lyrics, and other genres in the period c.1100-1550. This book is a stimulating appraisal of the impact, in medieval insular contexts, of an international idea of great longevity and significance, and makes an important contribution to the study of death, belief, and society in pre-modern Europe. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, XII+242 p., 15 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503524702.‎

‎The essays collected here represent the current state of research into the works of John Gower, poet, philosopher, and contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer. They assess Gower's literary output within the context of manuscript production and readership/ownership in late medieval England and the triangle of Latin, French, and English as literary and official languages in Ricardian England. Sections of the volume focus on manuscripts and the circulation of Gower's works in languages other than English. In addition, the literary and philosophical contexts that inform Gower's poetics and politics are considered here, resulting in readings of the poet's rhetorical and ethical agenda as well as his texts' intervention in and reaction to social outsiders in his contemporary London. A wide variety of critical discourses inform the readings presented here, including medieval English, French, and Latin literary studies, art history, manuscript production and reception, postmodern ethics, and historical studies. ‎What Nature Does Not Teach. Didactic Literature in the Medieval and Early-Modern Periods,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Hardback, XIV+530 p., 3 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503525969.‎

‎This interdisciplinary volume takes as its subject the multi-faceted genre of didactic literature (the literature of instruction) which constituted the cornerstone of literary enterprise and social control in medieval and early modern Europe. Following an Introduction that raises questions of didactic meaning, intent, audience, and social effect, nineteen chapters deal with the construction of the individual didactic voice and persona in the premodern period, didactic literature for children, women as the creators, objects, and consumers of didactic literature, the influence of advice literature on adult literacy, piety, and heresy, and the revision of classical didactic forms and motifs in the early modern period. Attention is paid throughout to the continuities of didactic literature across the medieval and early modern periods?its intertextuality, reliance on tradition, and self-renewal?and to questions of gender, authority, control, and the socially constructed nature of advice. Contributors particularly explore the intersection of advice literature with real lives, considering the social impact of both individual texts and the didactic genre as a whole. The volume deals with a wide variety of texts from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, written in languages from Latin through the European vernaculars to Byzantine Greek and Russian, offering a comprehensive overview of this pervasive and influential genre. ‎Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529233.‎

‎Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most remarkable of medieval writers. Living to almost one hundred years of age, Tolomeo bore witness to some of the most important events of the period. He studied and travelled with Thomas Aquinas and was elected Dominican prior in Lucca and Florence. He attended the saintly Pope Celestine V during Celestine's doomed reign, lived at the papal court in Avignon, served in the households of two cardinals, and associated with the infamous Pope John XXII. At the age of eighty, Tolomeo was appointed bishop of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, where his superior, the Patriarch of Grado, subsequently excommunicated and jailed him. Tolomeo is known today for his major contribution to republican political thought, most notably his continuation of Thomas Aquinas's only political treatise. However, he also wrote treatises on imperial and ecclesiastical power, a commentary on the six days of creation, a massive Church history, and a European history from 1063 onward. Drawn from all known surviving sources, The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's life. It discusses each of his works, and addresses numerous problems of authorship and dating. Its companion volume, The Worldview and Thought of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca), provides an in-depth analysis of Tolomeo's beliefs and thought. Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Doubt in an Age of Faith Uncertainty in the Long Twelfth Century,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XIV+216 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527482.‎

‎Doubt in an Age of Faith presents the first systematic scholarly treatment of doubt and its cultural role in Latin Christendom during the long twelfth century (c. 1060-1220). Flanagan rejects the popular image of the credulous Middle Ages, showing the centrality of doubt to intellectual and religious discourses of the period. However this wide-ranging investigation is not confined to matters of faith or religious scepticism. Examining doubt as both a psychological and social phenomenon, Flanagan explores how medieval people experienced uncertainty, and the different ways in which they sought to resolve it. Both positive and negative aspects of doubt are discussed. Her proposal that the rejection of doubt as a tool of intellectual inquiry, coupled with the quest for ever-greater certainty contributed to the closing of minds that marked the thirteenth century, has obvious implications for our own times. ‎Romance and Rhetoric. Essays in Honour of Dhira B. Mahoney,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, VIII+281 p., 2 b/w ill., 3 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531496.‎

‎Reflecting the work of Dhira B. Mahoney, in whose honour this book is published, these essays discuss the intersections between medieval rhetoric and various sorts of medieval literature, with particular focus on romance. This volume honours the academic career of Professor Dhira B. Mahoney, recently retired from the Department of English at Arizona State University, who is well known for her rhetorical readings of medieval literature. Professor Mahoney?s scholarship employs rhetorical theory in readings of late medieval literature, particularly prologues and epilogues, women?s writings, and Arthuriana. As a response to her work, Romance and Rhetoric offers rhetorical readings of a variety of literary pieces from the late Middle Ages, especially for those authors and genres on which Professor Mahoney has published. Its collected essays provide interdisciplinary studies of art, social and literary history, manuscript transmission, and women?s studies in relation to texts in Middle English, Latin, German, and French. In particular, the essays in this volume focus on the writings of courtly authors such as Chaucer, Lydgate, Malory, Guillaume de Machaut, Christine de Pizan, Chretien de Troyes, and others. In keeping with the ancient tradition of analysing rhetorical principles in the structure of an art work, they also examine the rhetoric of the manuscript art connected to these authors and the genres in which they wrote. This volume thus fills a gap in medieval literary scholarship, as it evaluates with scrutiny how rhetorical teachings or medieval poetic strategies inform the writing of romances. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, X+308 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527567.‎

‎Marcia Colish is one of the most influential scholars of the history of medieval and early modern thought, the author of numerous books and scores of articles in the field, as well as a pioneering President of the Medieval Academy of America. This volume honours her accomplishments with papers by her many colleagues, friends, and former students, who are themselves prominent scholars from across a range of disciplines. The chapters are diverse chronologically and topically, yet they are all stimulated by themes that Prof. Colish has explored during her long and distinguished career. They address the richness of European intellectual history between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, treating the multiple heritages of philosophy, theology, political theory, historiography, classical reception, and many other subjects to which her scholarship extends. The volume demonstrates the power of ideas in the development of European history generally, revealing that the careful study of the works of the 'mind' does indeed 'matter'. Languages : English.‎

‎Classics in the Medieval and Renaissance Classroom. The Role of Ancient Texts in the Arts Curriculum as Revealed by Surviving Manuscripts and Early Printed Books,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, X+455 pages ., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm.*NEW ISBN 9782503527543.‎

‎Medievalists and Renaissance specialists contribute to this compelling volume examining how and why the classics of Greek and Latin culture were taught in various Western European curricula (including in England, Scotland, France, Germany, and Italy) from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries. By analysing some of the commentaries, glosses, and paraphrases of these classics that were deployed in medieval and Renaissance classrooms, and by offering greater insight into premodern pedagogic practice, the chapters here emphasize the 'pragmatic' aspects of humanist study. The volume proposes that the classics continued to be studied in the medieval and Renaissance periods not simply for their cultural or 'ornamental' value, but also for utilitarian reasons, for 'life lessons'. Because the volume goes beyond analysing the educational manuals surviving from the premodern period and attempts to elucidate the teaching methodology of the premodern period, it provides a nuanced insight into the formation of the premodern individual. The volume will therefore be of great interest to scholars and students interested in medieval and Renaissance history in general, as well as those interested in the history of educational theory and practice, or in the premodern reception of classical literature. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 1 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529264.‎

‎Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most important political theorists and historians of the Middle Ages. He was central to developing a theory for the practices of Northern Italian republicanism and was hostile to kingship, portraying it as despotic and inappropriate for virtuous and freedom-loving people. He was the first writer to compare Aristotle's examples of Greek mixed constitutions - Sparta, Crete, and Carthage - with the Roman Republic, the ancient Hebrew polity, the Church, and medieval communes, yet he remained a staunch defender of the absolute secular and spiritual monarchy of the pope. Blythe explores various tensions in Tolomeo's work that are often overlooked in scholarly treatments of him, and which derive from cultural preconceptions and the diverse influences on him: Aristotle, Augustine, apologists for papal power, his life in the Dominican Order, his educational experience with Thomas Aquinas, and his social position as a member of Northern Italy's ruling class. These factors exerted contradictory influences on Tolomeo and led him to a sometimes unsuccessful intellectual struggle for consistency. This book is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's thought and it gives full consideration not only to the political writings for which he is most known, but also to his historical and exegetical works. It is the companion to The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca). Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎This volume contains a selection from among the papers delivered at a conference held to mark the centenary of a watershed event in early modern studies: the appearance of Volume I of P. S. Allen?s edition of Erasmus?s letters. Erasmus scholarship has been a growing field since the late twentieth century, owing to the enormous volume and vast intellectual range of his oeuvre and to the reprinting of his works from the 1960s onwards, while Allen?s edition has proved the basis for research for scholars of almost every aspect of Renaissance humanism and the Reformation. The conference aimed to investigate as many aspects as possible of Erasmus?s literary, educational, rhetorical, and theological activities and of their influence on the emerging Europe of the early modern era. The essays collected here present a wide-ranging overview of the current state of Erasmus scholarship, including a survey of the discoveries of letters to and from Erasmus unknown to Allen, the printing for the first time since 1529 of the opening section of an important letter to him from Germain de Brie, an account of the crucial role played by Ulrich von Hutten in the publication of the dialogue Iulius exclusus e coelis, and several studies of the influence of Erasmian thought on early modern political and theological controversies. With its broad coverage of the current field, the volume will prove indispensable to Erasmus scholars.‎

‎Empathy is a deep feeling or intuition for kinship transcending self-preoccupied individuality. This book is about empathy in the Middle Ages, before it had a name. The authors begin by tracing the origins of empathy in pre-Christian Antiquity and early Christianity, especially in mysteries of divine justice, by which the good often suffered and the wicked prospered and, as with surgical healing, compassion was manifested by inflicting pain. The authors also explore many facets of empathy's development in the Latin West, criss-crossing the artificial borders of academic departments to reveal interlocking connections that give emotional power to images, whether verbal, pictorial, or performative. In a powerful multi-disciplinary collaboration, they identify conditions and limits of empathy, and areas in which the dynamic between insiders and outsiders forced subversive explorations of what it meant to be human. The doctrine of Christ as mediator of divine love dominated medieval thought about empathy as a human instinct. Taken together, like magnetic poles, two pictures in this book represent that mediation in action. The cover illustration, a mid-ninth-century ivory plaque from Carolingian Gaul, depicts Christ, the Divine Word, Love incarnate, glorified, enthroned, and adored by angels as creator, judge, and teacher. The second, Plate 1, from the same period and region, represents the act that sealed the mediation of divine love to humanity: Christ the man, tortured and dying from love.Languages : English, Latin.‎

This will make individual notebooks available to scholars as they appear and allow critical feedback, laying the foundations for an electronic edition that will be prepared simultaneously. The editorial aim is to bring together all of the information relevant to each note in as concise and simple a way as possible. The Finnegans Wake Notebook Edition will provide a reference library of comprehensively quoted source material-in effect an annotated digest of Joyce's working library-which will serve as a new star-ting point not just for exegesis of Finnegans Wake, but also for biographical, textual, and literary criticism of Joyce. Furthermore, the Edition will allow for a reconstruction of Joyce's intellectual concerns and compositional habits during the drafting of Work in Progress / Finnegans Wake. Language : English.‎
