TRUBETZKOY NS. TRUBETSKOY TRUBETSKOI CONSTRUCTING AN ARTIFICIAL INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE N. S.
Prague 1939. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Minor wear and loss to extremities but a very nice clean and uncut copy. 345 3 pp. First edition of two very important articles by the founder of morphophonology the seminal linguist Prince Nikolai Sergeyevich Trubetzkoy. The first article is a cornerstone of interlinguistics and the study of the possible construction of an artificial international language.

Trubetzkoy 1890-1938 died at a young age and published very little in his life-time and so also his main work was published posthumously. The present article "Wie soll das Lautsystem einer knstlichen internationalen Hilfssprache beschaffen sein" represents a classic work within interlinguistics and is considered one of the most important contributions to the solving of the problem of constructing a phonologically acceptable international language. The other article by him present here "Aus meiner phonologischen Karthotek" was the last thing he worked on before he died.

Trubetzskoy is considered one of the most important linguists of the 20th century and his name within this field has been made immortal due to his contributions to phonology especially focused on determining general and universal phonological laws. He was responsible for establishing phonology as a discipline in itself separate from phonetics and he is the founder morphophonology the study of the phonological structure of morphemes. He was one of the main members of the Prague School of linguistics and due to his premature death of a heart attack probably caused by him being persecuted by the Nazis due to his anti-Nazi views we are much indebted to his fellow linguist and friend Roman Jakobson for spreading Trubetzkoy's theories.

Trubetzkoy corresponded with many of the great linguists of his time e.g. Hjelmslev the founder of the Copehagen School of linguistics and many of these important philologers have contributed to this volume of articles which are all written in the honour of Trubetzkoy. unknown

Minor occassional brownspotting. A small stamp to title-page. XIV 371 1 pp. 1 folded plate; XVI 398 1 - errata pp. The scarce first edition of Curtius' magnum opus a work of immense importance to the theory of the Greek language and one of the most important influential and useful works on the theory of language in general.

"Nach den Ansichten Aller auch der Gegner gehren diese "Grundzge" zu den werthvollsten und ntzlichsten Werken der Sprachwissenschaft berhaupt" Ernst Windisch in: Sebeok Portraits of Linguists I: p. 332.

The work took Curtius about a decade to write and the two volumes appeared with four years in between them. It is very rare to find any of the two volumes in the first edition and both volumes in the first edition are almost never seen together. The work became immensely popular and five editions appeared between this first and 1879.

Georg Curtius 1820-1885 is one of the leading German classicists of all times. His writings were fundamental to the study of the Greek language and are among the most profound influential and thorough ever written.

Within the theory of language one can hardly point to a work more generally influential than the present which also excels in stringently and eloquently pointing out the connection between etymology and phonetics and proving that only through phonetics has etymology become a science. unknown

THE BOOK OF MORMON FIRST TRANSLATION INTO ANY LANGUAGE OF THE BOOK OF MORMON
Mormons Bog. The Book of Mormon En Beretning skreven ved Mormons Haand paa Tavler efter Nephis Tavler. Oversat paa Engelsk fra Grundtexten af Joseph Smith den Yngre. Udgivet og forlagt af Erastus Snow.
Kbenhavn F. E. Bordings Bogtrykkeri 1851. Small 8vo. Contemporary brown half calf with double gilt lines and gilt title to spine. End-papers renewed but the old front free end-paper with a contemporary owner's inscription has been preserved. A bit of wear to extremities and slight foxing throughout the text. A nice solid copy. Bound with the leaf containing the testimony of the three and eight Witnesses on recto end verso respectively. 8 568 pp. Exceedingly rare first edition thus namely the seminal first printing of the first translation into any language of the Book of Mormon.

After the Prophet Joseph Smith's original translation of the Book of Mormon from the gold plates into English in 1829 and the return of those plates to the angel Moroni no translations from English into any other languages appeared until this Danish translation of 1851. After this groundbreaking first translation the Book of Mormon has been translated in its entirety into 95 languages with portions of the book having been translated into another 20 languages and has been printed in more than 150 million copies.

The divine injunction states that "every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue and in his own language" D&C 90:11 and thus making the Book of Mormon available in other languages was regarded as highly important. Missions were opened on the continent of Europe in 1850 and 1851 and Church leaders in many of the newly opened missions quickly began attempts at translations. The Danish edition had already been contemplated in 1845 however and was thus the very first to appear meaning that Latter-day Saints in Denmark were the first to read the Book of Mormon in their native tongue.

At a general conference in 1845 President Brigham Young appointed Apostle Erastus Snow and Elder Peter Olsen Hansen to work on this Danish translation of the Book of Mormon which would open up the Book of Mormon to other-language speakers of the 19th century. Peter O. Hansen was a native Dane and was to do the actual translation while Erastus Snow was to guide Hansen and be in charge of publishing . They both arrived in Copenhagen in May 1850 and precisely a year later Snow could report back that the Danish translation had been printed in 3000 copies. Many of these are now lost or destroyed and the first edition of the book is of the utmost scarcity. See Andrew Jenson: History of the Scandinavian Mission 1927. unknown

CONDILLAC ETIENNE BONNET ABBE de. THE LANGUAGE OF ALGEBRA
Recent simple brown half cloth w. gilt title to spine. Uncut. Title-page w. large damp-stain next few leaves w. a bit of soiling to upper corner. Occasinal brownspotting. Every gathering extended and re-inforced at hinge probably in order to make the book open to its full extent. 2 484 1 -errata pp. The true first edition of this posthumously published major treatise Condillac's final main work which proved to be one of his most important and influential ones.

The work was originally published both separately as it is here with its own errata-leaf and title-page without mentioning of volume number for the Oeuvres and as the final volume of his "Oeuvres philosophiques".

Having realized that other philosophers' accounts of knowledge had failed because they focused on the essences instead of the origins Condillac in all of his major treatises set out to define moral and metaphysical problems as precisely as one can define the problems of geometry and the approach that would enable this would be analytic. In the same stroke he would correct Locke's mistake of "Internal sense" the distinction between the process of sensation and of reflection. "His instrument was a highly original theory of language as the analyst of experience. It is by the mind's capacity to invent and manipulate symbols of uniform and determinate significance that it passes from sensation to reflection and communication and hence to effective knowledge. By identifying the operations of language as the cause of intellectual functions Condillac intended to be making the kind of statement Newton had made when he identified gravity as the cause of planetary motion - an exact and verifiable generalization of phenomenal effects. " D.S.B. III:381.

It is in his last major work that Condillac deals most thoroughly with the analysis of language and the language of algebra. Algebra is the language of mathematics and it is the only language that is well done "bien faite" nothing in this language is arbitrary; the analogies of this language are always precise and lead on to new sensible expressions; in this language the purpose is not to learn to speak like others the purpose is to speak in the greater analogy in order to reach a greater precision. Algebra the language of mathematics is a language of analogies. Analogy which constitute this language also constitutes the methods. "L'analogie: viola donc quoi se rduit tout l'art de raisonner comme tout l'art de parler; et dans ce seul mot nous voyons comment nous pouvons nous instruire des dcouvertes des autres et comment nous en pouvons faire nous-mmes."= "The analogy: now this is what the entire art of reasoning as well as the entire art of talking can be reduced to; and with this single word we see how we can guide the discoveries of others and how we can do them ourselves. own translation" p. 7. And thus the objective of this work is to see how it will be possible to give to other sciences the same exactness as that which we otherwise believe exclusively to be a part of mathematics namely the exactness of the language of algebra.

"It was through his last works -"La logique" and especially "La langue des calculs"- that Condillac exercised the most decisive influence on the philosophical taste of the generation of scientists immediately following his own. Therein like his predecessors in the rationalist tradition he looked to mathematics as the exemplar of knowledge. He parted company with them however in developing the preference he had expressed in his early work for the analytic over the synthetic mode of reasoning." D.S.B.; III:382. Algebra seen as both a language and as the method of analysis in comparison to the inaccurate instrument that is ordinary language would reveal to Condillac what is the difference between the problems of science and those of society the moral and metaphysical ones. "And in that comparison Condillac's philosophy entered into the reforming mission of the Enlightenment the central imperative of the rationalism then having been to reduce the imperfections of human arrangements by approximating them to the natural and to educate the human understanding in the grammar of nature. In Franceat least the congruence of Condillac's philosophy of science with the broader commitments of progressive culture recommended it so scientists themselves as the most authoritative reading of Newtonian methodology. The terminology and symbolism of the modern science of chemistry are examples still alive in science of the practicality of this program." D.S.B. III:382.

Condillac's philosophy of science was considered the most authoritative reading of Newtonian methodology. Among many others Lavoicier and other protagonists of the chemical revolution were influenced by his reform of nomenclature as were and are botanists zoologists and geometrics by his scientific explanations. His psychological empiricism is now considered the first positivist account of science.

Condillac was one of the greatest French philosophers of the Enlightenment. He was friends with Rousseau and Diderot and was a forerunner in the junction between epistemology and philosophy which was inspired by Locke and Newton as the two sciences almost merged into one in this period. "Condillac contibuted to the synthesis more decisively than did any other writer." D.S.B. III:380. hardcover

Even though his atomic symbols were introduced in 1813 see the note on p. 359 it was quite a few years before Berzelius's symbols were adopted by the chemistry community. But once accepted they became the new international language of chemistry.

Berzelius "contributed more to the development of the atomic theory and to the setting up of accurate values of the atomic weights than did any other worker of the time. Of his contributions moreover to the development of the atomic theory and the advancement of chemical science not the least valuable was the introduction of a chemical symbolism which with slight modification is in use at the present day. By giving his symbols a quantitative meaning - the symbol of an element representing one atomic proportion by weight - it was possible "to show briefly and clearly the number of elementary atoms in each compound and after the determination of their relative weights present the results of each analysis in a simple and easely retained manner". This symbolism was speedily adopted on the Continent but in England only after some considerable time."Findlay "A Hundred Years of Chemistry" p. 14.

Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1813 C. - Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry" p. 258 ff. - Holmberg 1813:28 a. hardcover

Babbage later stated that: "Without the aid of this language I could not have invented the Analytical Engine; nor do I belive that any machinery of equal complexity can ever be contrived without the assistance of that or of some other equivalent language. The Difference Engine No.2.is entirely described by its aid." .
Babbage considered his mechanical notation system to be one of his finest inventions and thought it should be widely implemented. It was a source of frustartion to him that no other machine designerr adopted it probably because no ther engineer during Babbage's time attermpted to build machines as logically and mechanically complex as Babbage's. More than one hundred years later in the 1930s when development in logic were applied to switching systems in the earliest efforts to devwelop electromechanical calculators. Ckaude Shannon demonstrated that Boolean algebra could be applied to the same types of problems for which Babbage had designed his mechanical notation system."Hook & Norman No. 37.

Together with Babbage's paper comes a paper by J.F.W. Internally nice and clean w. marginal annotations in light pencil only to parts of "Naming and Necessity" and w. an inlaid leaf w. cont. notes to the same. A crease to pasted down front endpaper. An excellent nice and clean copy of this thick book which is difficult to find in good condition. Pp. 251 - 355. Entire volume: X 769 3 pp. The rare first printing of Kripke's seminal main work which restructured philosophy of language.

The work is based on three lectures from 1970 which constitute an attack on Fregean and Russellian theories of reference with respect to proper names. It was originally published as it is here in Davidson and Harman's "Semantics of Natural Language" and it only appeared in the second edition which is the first separate edition eight years later in 1980. The first printing of this groundbreaking work is difficult to come by in good condition and Kripke's works in general are rare. Many of them remain unpublished and are only known in privately circulated manuscripts.

The American philosopher Saul A. Kripke born 1940 is an exceedingly important logician and philosopher of language and one of the most powerful and influential thinkers of analytic and Anglo-American philosophy. He is considered the greatest living philosopher and perhaps the greatest since Wittgenstein. In 2001 he was awarded the Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy which is considered the philosopical equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

His main work "Naming and Necessity" is doubtlessly among the most influential books of philosophy published within the last 50 or hundred years.

Before the publication of Kripke's "Naming and Necessity" analytic philosophy was moving in the direction of linguistic idealism which propounded the theory that man is trapped in language and that language is not "tuned" to the world. Almost on his own practically only aided by the publication of his "Naming and Necessity" Kripke changed this entire direction of philosophy and according to most logicians brought the philosophy of language back on track.

In 1980 when the second edition of this most influential work appeared "London Review of Books" write the following about the influence of the first edition: "When these lectures were first published eight years ago they stood analytic philosophy on its ear. Everybody was either furious or exhilarated or thoroughly perplexed. No one was indifferent." And it is true there can be no doubt about the impact that this book made on the world of philosophy of language and logic.

Kripke's work leads an attack on descriptivist theories of proper names that brings it a status comparable to that of the main works of Wittgenstein Russell and Frege. It is also these three giants of philosophy that he criticizes attributing to each of them variants of descriptivist theories that he then rejects. These descriptivist theories have that in common that they claim that names of individuals and properties function like definite descriptions. They are either synonymous with descriptions or they get their reference by being associated with a description or a bunch of descriptions that an object satisfies uniquely. Kripke disproves this theory claiming that it goes against our modal intuitions. The validity of our modal intuitions again are proven by the hugely influential notion of "possible worlds" which is traditionally used to systematize the semantics of modal statements. As opposed to definite descriptions names rigidly refer to their referents and they do so in every possible world in which the referent exists. Kripke here also establishes his "causal theory" of reference according to which names refer to their referents by being appropriately causally connected to them. Thus Kripke provides numerous examples that renders descriptivism implausible as a theory of how names get their reference determined at the same time as he provides the solution through his causal theory of reference stating firmly that the meaning of a name is simply the object that it refers to.

This work provides several groundbreaking theories for the fields of philosophy of logic and language which it has seminally come to change. The work almost single-handedly changed the fate that phiilosophy stood to fall with within the analytic tradition -that it was nothing more than the analysis of language. As such it now ranks as one of the most important works of 20th century philosophy. It is even by some regarded as one of the most important works of philosophy ever and it is difficult to overestimate the importance of this seminal work. hardcover

Block has lived in New York City for decades setting most of his fiction there and has come to be very closely associated with the city. He is married to Lynne Block. He has three daughters Amy Reichel Jill Block and Alison Pouliot from an earlier marriage. With Lynne he spends much of his time traveling the two have been to 135 countries but continues to consider New York his home. He was a regular guest on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson 2005-2015 appearing in eight of Ferguson's ten seasons as host of the program." . Writer's Digest Books hardcover
