Creating Characters: How To Build Story People
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: 2008. Softcover. Brand new book. A jargon-free manual on the basics of developing interesting fictional characters. Vibrant believable characters help drive a fictional story. Along with a clever plot well-drawn characters make us want to continue reading a novel or finish watching a movie. MELNAR LYNETTE R
Caddo Verb Morphology
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2008. Softcover. Brand new book. At the time of European contact with Native communities the Caddos who call themselves the Hasinai were accomplished traders living in the southern plains. Their communities occupied parts of present-day Texas Arkansas Louisiana and Oklahoma. It was early Spanish explorers who named a part of this territory "Texas" borrowing the Caddo word for "friend." Today there are approximately thirty-five hundred Caddos most of whom live in Oklahoma. Their original language which is related to the Plains languagesPawnee Arikara Kitsai and Wichitais rapidly dying and is spoken only by a diminishing number of Caddo elders. Drawing on interviews with Caddo speakers tapes made by earlier researchers and written accounts Lynette R. Melnar provides the first full-length overview and analysis of Caddo grammar. Because Caddo is an extremely complex language Melnar's clear description will be important to linguists in general as well as to those specializing in Native languages. Caddo Verb Morphology is an essential contribution to our understanding of the Caddos' traditional world in particular and of Native America in general. Lynette R. Melnar has a PhD in linguistics and is a research scientist for Motorola Labs. "Caddo Verb Morphology is sure to gain a reputation as the definitive description of what must be one of the world's most interesting polysynthetic morphologies. Melnar is to be congratulated on her detailed and insightful analysis but also on the lucidity with which she presents it."Wallace Chafe author of Meaning and the Structure of Language "A clear organized coherent description of the way meanings are expressed in Caddo verbs. . . . The loss of such languages impoverishes our knowledge of ourselves. We must be grateful to scholars like Melnar and Chafe however for providing us with at least a little peak into otherwise unacknowledged ways in which our brains can enable thought and communication."David S. Rood Great Plains Research "The yield of considerable thought hard work and language analysis. . . . We are pleased to note its publication for the benefit of those interested in the history of our region."East Texas Historical Journal "Her examination of Caddo is exemplary: thorough detailed and methodologically sound. She writes primarily for linguists but is careful to always identify terms and procedures. . . . Caddo Verb Morphology is a good book that will certainly become one of the central documents for the study of Caddo and the Caddo language family and an important text for Native American linguistics. Stainton Robert:
Words and Thoughts: Subsentences Ellipsis and the Philosophy of Language.
-Oxford University Press 2006-. First edition. xi248 pages with index. Cloth. New. Fine in dustjacket. It is a near truism of philosophy of language that sentences are prior to words. Sentences it is said are what we believe assert and argue for; uses of them constitute our evidence in semantics; only they stand in inferential relations and are true or false. Sentences are indeed the only things that fundamentally have meaning. Does this near truism really hold of human languages Robert Stainton drawing on a wide body of evidence argues forcefully that speakers can and do use mere words not sentences to communicate complete thoughts. He then considers the implications of this empirical result for language-thought relations various doctrines of sentence primacy and the semantics-pragmatics boundary. The book is important both for its philosophical and empirical claims and for the methodology employed. Stainton illustrates how the methods and detailed results of the various cognitive sciences can bear on central issues in philosophy of language. At the same time he applies philosophical distinctions with subtlety and care to show that arguments which seemingly support the primacy of sentences do not really do so. The result is a paradigm example of The New Philosophy of Language: a rich melding of empirical work with traditional philosophy of language. -Oxford University Press, 2006- hardcover

Stanley Jason:
Language in Context: Selected Essays
-Oxford University Press 2007-. First edition. ix264 pages with index. Cloth. New. Fine in dustjacket. Natural languages all contain constructions the interpretation of which depends upon the situation in which they are used. In Language and Context Jason Stanley presents a series of essays which develop a theory of how the situation in which we speak interacts with the words we use to help produce what we say. The reason we can so smoothly operate with sentences that can be used to express very different items of information Stanley argues is that there are linguistically mandated constraints on the effects of the situation on what we say. These linguistically mandated constraints are most evident in the cases of sentences containing explicit pronouns such as 'She is a mathematician' where interpretation of the information expressed is guided by the use of the pronoun 'she'. But even when such explicit pronouns are lacking our sentences provide similar cues to allow our interlocutors to determine the information expressed. We are in the main confident that our interlocutors will smoothly grasp what we say because the grammar and meaning of our sentences encodes these constraints. In defending this theory Stanley pays close attention to specific cases of context-sensitive constructions such as quantified noun phrases comparative adjectives and conditionals. Philosophers and cognitive scientist have appealed to the dependence of what is intuitively said by a sentence on the situation in which it is uttered to argue against the possibility of a systematic theory of meaning for natural language. The theory developed in this book is a vigorous defence of the possibility of a systematic theory of meaning for natural language against these influential tendencies. -Oxford University Press, 2007- hardcover

COLE JONI B
Toxic Feedback- Helping Writers Survive And Thrive
University Press of New England Lebanon NH: 2006. Softcover. Brand new book. How writers can make the best of even the worst criticism. All writers have stories of how some teacher workshop participant friend or spouse gave them commentary that undermined their confidence and their writing. This "toxic feedback" has tainted feedback's reputation as a whole causing too many writers to avoid or mismanage this valuable resource. In the first book to focus on this vital but delicate dynamic Joni B. Cole applies first-person experience real-life teaching examples and her own unique ability to entertain while reaffirming the many merits of feedback. Cole shows writers how to use feedback to energize and inform their writing at every stage of the process. For feedback providers she delivers insights into constructive criticism and the difference between being heard and being obnoxious. Finally she offers advice to workshops and critique groups on how to thrive in this collective experience. In addition established writers ranging from Julia Alvarez and Khaled Hosseini to Gregory Maguire and Jodi Picoult share their own feedback stories - from useful to inspiring to deranged - underscoring Cole's message that feedback plays a critical role in every writer's success. Through a mixture of instruction anecdotes and moral support Cole manages to detoxify the feedback process with humor and without laying blame inspiring both sides of the interaction to make the most of this powerful resource.
