‎Ce quatrieme volume bilingue (francais-anglais) est ne des echanges d'une journee d'etude qui s'est deroulee au printemps 1999 a Sherbrooke au Quebec. Plusieurs etudes ont ete ajoutees aux communications presentees a cette occasion. Toutes tentent de repondre a la question : quels textes evangeliques pouvait-on lire en francais avant l'installation definitive de Calvin a Geneve et la publication de la premiere version francaise de l'Institution de la religion chrestienne de 1541 ? Les approches de ces contributions sont tres diverses, envisageant tantot les auteurs, tantot les imprimeurs, mais aussi la constitution des bibliotheques, l'histoire de l'art, la traduction-adaptation des textes, la presence d'epigraphe sur la page de titre, etc. Guillaume Farel est un peu l'ame de la Reforme francaise a ses debuts. Un chapitre presente l'ensemble de son action pour le livre, un autre analyse son oeuvre majeure, le Summaire. Marguerite de Navarre a ete le grand soutien des evangeliques. Elle n'est pas seulement presente a travers l'etude d'un catechisme dont elle a commande une copie manuscrite, mais aussi dans la plupart des autres etudes. Une autre femme, sa protegee, Marie d'Ennetieres, fait l'objet de deux travaux. Par ailleurs, il est question de l'action des imprimeurs, Martin Lempereur a Anvers, Pierre de Vingle a Geneve et Neuchatel. D'autres approches sont encore proposees : l'etude de la bibliotheque d'Anne Boleyn, la reecriture et l'expurgation d'une preface d'Erasme, le recours a l'epigraphe Lisez et jugez sur les pages de titre. L'etude de la fin d'un best-seller catholique souligne en contre-point la montee du livre evangelique. Enfin un chapitre de conclusion tente une vue d'ensemble sur le destin du livre evangelique en francais avant l'entree en scene de Jean Calvin. Le recueil propose aussi l'edition de quelques textes peu connus : une Epistre chrestienne de 1524 environ, peut-etre de Farel, le premier psaume traduit par Marot livre a l'imprimerie, sans parler de textes dont la transcription est ajoutee en annexe de plusieurs etudes. Bref, une vue d'ensemble sur un sujet parfois neglige au profit des annees sur lesquelles domine la figure de Jean Calvin. Languages : French, Latin.‎

‎A la Renaissance, l'essor de l'imprime et le renouveau des etudes sont a l'origine de grandes mutations qui modifient en profondeur les voies de diffusion de l'ecrit et les pratiques de la lecture. Guillaume Bude, parce qu'il joue un role de premier ordre dans la transmission des textes grace a sa position centrale dans le reseau humaniste francais et europeen, s'impose comme un temoin majeur de ces evolutions. Cette etude commence par l'exploration des conditions materielles de la lecture dans la premiere moitie du XVIe siecle en se fondant en premier lieu sur les temoignages qui fourmillent dans l'ensemble de son oeuvre. Elle s'attache ensuite a analyser ses reflexions theoriques sur la lecture et sur l'etude des lettres pour mettre en lumiere l'originalite de son art de lire qui se fonde principalement sur la notion d'encyclopedisme ainsi que la revendication de la liberte du lecteur. La presentation de cet art de lire se trouve enrichie par l'analyse des representations metaphoriques de la lecture qui fait apparaitre les contradictions et les angoisses inherentes au renouveau de la lecture, en grande partie liees, pour Bude, a la difficile conciliation entre christianisme et lettres profanes. Enfin, cette etude s'acheve par l'examen de la strategie mise en place par l'humaniste pour repondre aux difficultes posees par les mutations du livre et de la lecture, en particulier des voies choisies pour determiner son lectorat et definir la lecture qu'il cherche a obtenir pour ses ouvrages. La premiere partie s'interroge sur l'identite de l'auteur a la Renaissance, a la fois dans la facon dont il se choisit un nom en latin ou en grec (Reinhard Bodenmann), sur son anonymat au XVIe siecle (Malcolm Walsby), sur sa ? mort ? (Carlo Vecce) ou sur la question du privilege (Jeanine Landtsheer). La seconde section traite des ? Vies paralleles ? , d'abord dans les sources chez Plutarque (Andrea Rodighiero), dans la Fabrique des recits des Grands hommes au XVIe siecle (Patricia Eichel-Lojkine, ou dans les Vies d'auteur (Michel Jeanneret). La troisieme questionne ? ‎Claude d'Espence est loin d'etre un inconnu pour les specialistes de la France du XVIe siecle ou du temps des Reformes. Cette belle figure a toujours suscite l'interet que merite un ? moyenneur ? en un temps de dechirures, un homme de paix en une periode de guerre entre chretiens. L'historiographie moderne a rendu justice a toute l'importance de son role et a divers aspects de sa pensee religieuse complexe. Le sujet est pourtant loin d'etre epuise et diverses recherches tres recentes ou en cours ont apporte du nouveau. Il nous a semble utile de reunir ici les auteurs de ces recherches, historiens et litteraires, Suisses et Francais, pour une rencontre qui est la premiere avant tout centree sur Claude d'Espence. Quelques points sont particulierement privilegies dans cet ouvrage : le lien avec Erasme, qui permet plus generalement de mettre l'accent sur l'originalite de la pensee de notre theologien ou au contraire son lien avec des courants humanistes plus globaux ; les annees 1540, qui sont celles de la ? prise de parole ? de d'Espence, avec la fameuse affaire des predications de Careme de Saint-Merry en 1543, dont Julien Ferrant reprend le dossier a partir de l'interrogatoire de d'Espence devant ses juges de la faculte, et les publications de 1547-1548, qui voient le fameux predicateur utiliser pour la premiere fois le medium de l'imprimerie et le faire en francais. Seront ainsi presentees les Homelies sur la parabole de l'Enfant prodigue, le Traite contre l'erreur vieil et nouvel des predestinez, et l'Institution du prince chrestien. La seconde partie de notre journee insiste plus sur des aspects moins lies directement a la theologie ou a la spiritualite : les liens avec le monde politique et principalement L'Hospital, les realisations litteraires, le reseau social. Mais ces divers aspects ne peuvent en realite etre separes les uns des autres. La puissante originalite theologique de d'Espence n'aurait pu se developper sans le solide reseau d'amis, de parents, de protecteurs dont il disposait par sa naissance et qu'il a su remarquablement entretenir et faire fructifier sa vie durant. Et en retour, nul doute que ses positions religieuses et la notoriete qu'elles lui ont procuree lui ont attire des sympathies et des soutiens nouveaux ou consolide d'anciens patronages. Conseiller des rois de Francois Ier a Catherine de Medicis, intime des elites parlementaires, lie tres etroitement au cardinal de Lorraine, sans, semble-t-il, connaitre la meme disgrace que L'Hospital apres le tournant de 1562, interlocuteur de Bucer, Calvin, Beze, mais aussi des papes et des peres du concile de Trente, d'Espence n'est pas un spectateur, mais bien un acteur du drame religieux et humain du XVIe siecle. ‎What I want to relate here, is how one of the most remarkable thinkers of the Renaissance passed on his image for posterity. ‎This volume includes a collection of reworked articles which the author, during the last twenty years, dedicated to the origins and conditions constitutive of Christian philosophical-theological thought. From the earliest centuries of the Christian era, human reason was submitted to a particular formal conditioning, in so far as it was necessarily obliged to confront the contents of a divine revelation recognized as necessarily 'true'. The medieval Latin scholar was induced by the social and cultural peculiarities of his time to confront a model of thought which imposes a decisive subordination of natural knowledge ? demonstrated to be imperfect and inconclusive ? to the certainties assured by the faith. The production of this model of philosophia, sensibly different from the dominant paradigms in the classical period, rooted itself in the critical redimensioning of reason introduced into the West by Cicero. Departing from the observation of the failure of the philosophical aspirations of antiquity, the Christian intellectuals effected an operative 'overturning' of the conditions of veridical knowledge. The new wisdom was not the result of a pure interference of religion in the field of rational science; it was, however, directed by a conscious 'conversion' of the philosophers and fulfilled on two sides: on that of the faith, which requires earthly knowledge in order to defend itself from misunderstandings and heresies; and on that of reason, which allows itself to draw upon supernatural revelation for the possession of regulatory principles which guide it in the study of natural things. This book investigates the development of this approach during the course of the centuries which precede, in the West, the rediscovery of Aristotelian epistemology: from Augustine to Boethius, from John Scottus Eriugena to Anselm of Aosta. It moves to the point of describing the return of this methodological approach, at the end of the Medieval Scholastic period, in the results of the anti-Aristotelian critique carried out by the men of the Renaissance in the recovering of a model of thought which had dominated in the Patristic and Early Medieval periods. ‎Lo stretto nodo che congiunge il progressivo formarsi dell'identita culturale all'evoluzione dinamica del sapere in eta carolingia viene evidenzato in questo studio mediante una serrata analisi critica e storiografica delle diverse opere di argomento teologico scritte dai pensatori che furono piu coinvolti nei dibattiti sull'ortodossia cristiana tra i primi anni di regno di Carlo Magno (dal 780 in poi) e la seconda meta del secolo IX. La lettura, il commento e l'esegesi dei testi che documentano tali discussioni consentono l'accesso piu efficace e sostanziale all'evoluzione della teologia carolingia, che trovo proprio nel confronto con tesi ritenute eterodosse la spinta a chiarire i temi piu delicati della dottrina cristiana. Da Beato di Libana, Alcuino e Rabano Mauro, fino a Ratramno di Corbie e Giovanni Scoto Eriugena, gli intellettuali carolingi si impegnarono nel comporre opere tendenzialmente ispirate dalla volonta di confutare argomentazioni estranee all'ortodossia e di specificare dottrine non ancora stabilmente definite. Il patrimonio patristico, la lettura assidua e consapevole delle Scritture e lo studio delle artes profane, tutti elementi che si ponevano alla base della loro formazione sapienziale, vennero cosi rielaborati in una comune identita teologica: in essa prese forma e concretezza la stessa ossatura culturale della nuova entita civile che con gli strumenti della politica, dell'azione militare e del controllo economico si andava creando e consolidando nell'Occidente latino in quegli stessi anni. Le fasi piu intense del complesso quadro di dibattiti ricostruito nel presente volume evidenziano il duplice ruolo rivestito in eta carolingia dalla discussione su temi teologici: funzionale a contenere e delimitare deviazioni dalla ortodossia di autori contemporanei, e, al contempo, utile ad una progressiva definizione della dottrina e dell'identita culturale del nuovo impero barbaro-cristiano. ‎La figura di Guido Vernani da Rimini (? ca. 1345) e nota sinora agli specialisti soprattutto per alcune opere teologico-politiche, tra cui il De reprobatione Monarchiae compositae a Dante e il De potestate Summi Pontificis. Domenicano italiano, lettore nello Studio dei Frati Predicatori di Bologna tra i 1310 e il 1324 e passato poi al convento di Rimini, Guido ha lasciato vari commentari aristotelici sotto forma di Sententia (alla Fisica - perduto -, alla Politica, alla Retorica e all'Etica). Oltre la piu nota Sententia libri ethicorum (o Summa de virtutibus, un compendio dell'Etica aristotelica scritto sulla falsariga del commento di Tommaso), Guido ha composto una seconda opera di carattere morale, concepita come un trattato sulle virtu: il Liber de virtutibus quae ad vitam verae militiae requiruntur. Anche in questo caso e stata segnalata una forte dipendenza di Guido da Tommaso d'Aquino: la sua fonte principale, in questo caso, non e pero la Sententia libri ethicorum, bensi la Summa theologiae (Ia-IIae e IIa-IIae). Il presente studio comprende una presentazione ed una edizione del Liber de virtutibus dall?unico manoscritto esistente (Venezia, Biblioteca Marciana VI, 13 del XV secolo), nell?intento di gettare luce sul modo in cui, attraverso Tommaso, l'etica aristotelica veniva riproposta, semplificata e adeguata agli intendimenti di una morale ?teologica?, in Italia durante la prima meta del XIV secolo, cercando di identificare condizionamenti dottrinali, intenti culturali e utenti potenziali sulla base dei filtri adoperati nella lettura semplificatrice che ne viene fatta. Il volume e completato da un quadro storico-dottrinale di ampio respiro, in cui sono presentati da una parte l'autore del trattato e dall?altra i grandi temi dell'etica tomista che vengono discussi nella scuola domenicana successiva a Tommaso, anche in polemica con altri indirizzi dottrinali attivi nelle scuole teologiche fra XIII e XIV secolo. Il presente la totalite des monasteres armeniens connus, classes topographiquement (Armenie, Azerbaidjan, Georgie, Karabagh, Turquie, Europe centrale et orientale, autres regions du Proche-Orient). Plus d'un millier d'etablissements sont ainsi repertories ; pour chacun d'eux, l'auteur mentionne les differentes appellations et fournit une localisation aussi precise que possible. Viennent ensuite l'indication des dates de fondation et des periodes d'activite - une attention particuliere est accordee a la presence d'une scriptorium -, et une precision sur l'etat actuel du batiment (detruit, en ruines, restaure, en activite, etc.). Enfin, chaque notice est pourvue d'une breve introduction bibliographique. Le volume comporte encore une impressionnant index reprenant toutes les graphics des toponymes et des noms des monasteres : a lui seul, cet index constitue un outil unique. Le volume du Dr. Thierry, qui prend place dans une serie d'instruments de travail publies sous les auspices de l'Association internationale des Etudes Armeniennes, interessera a la fois les historiens et les historiens de l'art, les archeologues et les philologues, de l'Armenie ancienne et medievale en particulier, mais aussi du Proche-Orient en general. ‎Dote d'une superbe representation du Seigneur en Majeste, d'initiales historiees de grande qualite, d'initiales a motifs parlants et de belles initiales a decor vegetal, l'Evangeliaire de Remiremont compte parmi les plus beaux livres de ce type conserves dans les fonds de Departements. L'origine lorraine du manuscrit de Remiremont n'est certainement pas etrangere a son statut de manuscrit de luxe, car c'est dans l'Empire germanique que les Evangiles et les Evangeliaires ont connu leur plus bel essor. Le voisinage de l'art mosan, qui au seuil du XIIIe siecle vient de connaitre sa plus grande gloire, n'est sans doute pas etranger a la qualite stylistique et iconographique du manuscrit qui apparait du meme coup comme un nouveau temoin du 'style 1200'. ‎This study of the two-volume Lambeth Bible, one of the premier Romanesque giant bibles, concerns itself with its textual makeup as well as its magnificent illumination. It reports the results of research on texts and imagery found in over a hundred English and continental Romanesque Bibles. Comparative study of the prefatory materials in these Bibles yielded significant new understandings of their importance and represents a major conclusion of this study. They are important aids in establishing places of origin of biblical manuscripts and in the study of the illumination chosen for them. Exhaustive study of the prologues, chapter lists, and other miscellaneous texts in both volumes of the Lambeth Bible and other English Bibles, has helped to establish that the Lambeth Bible was not made at St. Albans or at Christ Church, Canterbury, two of the sites often suggested for its production. Six beautiful miniatures and thirty-one historiated initials remain in the Lambeth Bible so examination of their iconography is a major aspect of this book. This study includes both a search for visual and textual models for the imagery used in the Lambeth Bible and an investigation of the significance of those subjects in the twelfth century. In a surprising number of cases a relationship existed between the prologue preceding a biblical book and the imagery with which it was illuminated. Thus what initially seemed to be isolated instances of drawing inspiration from the prologues was in fact a customary practice of the makers of the Lambeth Bible. Languages : French, English.‎

‎This book is primarily a catalogue of those nearly-intact extant books containing the full music of the Mass made between the date of the Bohemian Revolution (July 1419) and the Battle of the White Mountain (November 1620). Two principal religious factions were active in Bohemia and Moravia during the period. The larger, the Utraquists, took communion in both bread and wine. The Roman Catholics, fewer but still numerous, followed the then relatively recent practice of using bread only. While graduals are important sources for the liturgy practised by Utraquists and Roman Catholics, many of them are also of great interest artistically and historically. Some of the more beautiful books were produced for use by the literary societies, later incorporated as guilds, which were responsible for the music in their churches. The information the books contain about the membership of the guilds, containing as it did most of the social strata of the towns, gives important information about the contemporary social structure and about the strength of Utraquism. Individual guild members often sponsored a page at the beginning of a mass set which was profusely decorated. The quality of the art and the evolution in the iconography can be appreciated in the book's 50 colour plates. Languages : English.‎

‎The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. ‎In de periode 1360-85 ontstond de eerste vrijwel complete Nederlandse prozavertaling van de bijbel. Tot aan de Reformatie bleef zij de belangrijkste toegang tot de bijbel in de volkstaal. De vertaling werd vervaardigd door Petrus Naghel (overl. 1 mei 1395), een kartuizer uit het klooster te Herne, die ook tal van andere werken uit de christelijke traditie in het Middelnederlands overzette. Zijn opdrachtgever was Jan Taye, een getrouwde man met kinderen, die enige malen schepen in het stadsbestuur van Brussel was. Zijn bemoeienis, als leek van eenvoudige adel, met het ontstaan van een bijbelvertaling is zelfs in Europees perspectief hoogst opmerkelijk. Centraal in deze studie staat de Historiebijbel van 1361, die Naghel op 23 juni 1361 voltooide. Een historiebijbel bevat uitsluitend de historische boeken van de bijbel, veelal rijkelijk voorzien van commentaren en tal van andere teksten, soms van geheel profane aard. In acht hoofdstukken worden diverse aspecten van de Historiebijbel behandeld, zoals: de persoon van de vertaler en diens opdrachtgever, alsmede de historische bronnen die ons hierbij ten dienste staan; de oorspronkelijke opzet van de tekst; de waarde van de oudste handschriften voor onze kennis van receptie en productie van de tekst; de bewerkingstechniek die Petrus Naghel toepaste; de maatschappelijke en sociale factoren die een rol speelden bij de productie van historiebijbel-handschriften; de (vermeende) relatie met de Franse bijbelvertaling; de factoren die uiteindelijk hebben verhinderd dat Naghels bijbelvertaling door leken werd gelezen, waarbij met name dieper wordt ingegaan op de rol van de Moderne devotie. ‎Edward Lye (1694-1767) was an important contributor to the advancement of our understanding of the structure of the English language, its vocabulary, and its literature. Compared with the work of more celebrated pre-nineteenth-century Anglo-Saxonists and antiquaries, Lye's was a scholarly output of less original talent and reach (the role he gave himself was to 'remove the rubbish out of the way, as an underworkman'), but in the course of editing, improving, and publishing the hitherto unpublished work of others he made genuine advances in scholarship, particularly in the areas of English lexicography and Gothic studies. The Lye correspondence - in the main a collection of scholarly letters that are also sometimes the personal communications of friends - indicates how varied his interests were, how widely he read, and how frequently he discussed texts, elucidated cruces, and established correct textual readings, often for the first time. This edition presents the 193 letters known to have passed between Edward Lye and forty-five correspondents between 1729 and Lye's death in 1767. English translations are provided for letters written in Latin, Greek, and Swedish, as well as for words and passages in other languages (e.g. Old English, Gothic, Hebrew) discussed in the correspondence. The introduction provides a biography of Lye and a detailed examination of his major scholarly accomplishments: the edition of Franciscus Junius's Etymologicum Anglicanum, published in 1743 with extensive improvements and additions by Lye; the publication in 1750 of Eric Benzelius's edition and Latin translation of the Gothic Gospels (Sacrorum evangeliorum versio Gothica), together with Lye's own contribution of corrections and notes, preface, and a Gothic grammar; the Dictionarium Saxonico- et Gothico-Latinum, completed posthumously by Owen Manning and published in 1772; and an unfinished translation into Latin of the Old English poems of the Caedmon manuscript (Oxford, Bodl. MS. 11). Supporting materials, including biographical records and documents relevant to the edited letters and Lye's publications, are presented in several appendices; there are also biographical notes on Lye's correspondents and a bibliography of manuscripts and printed works. Like A Chorus of Grammars, edited by Richard L. ‎The Antwerp-London Glossaries are eleventh-century descendents of the earliest school text in the English language. In their earliest form they played a central role at the seventh-century school of Canterbury; they contributed material to the fundamental texts, dated to the 600s, known as the Leiden Glossary and the Epinal-Erfurt glossary. A varied collection with five distinguishable parts, the glossaries have at their heart a late Latin encyclopedia, the Etymologies of Isidore of Seville. The longest glossary lists thousands of Isidorian headwords and gives definitions in Old English. A second long glossary with two alphabetical components has some material that is even older. In addition, two small lists share some material with these longer texts. The glossaries are an important witness to the composing of the first encyclopedic work in our language. In shaping basic school texts, this encyclopedia became a crucial medium for translating Classical learning to an Insular environment. It put its stamp as well on the production of original works by the first generation of English writers, including Aldhelm, a Canterbury alumnus. The Antwerp-London Glossaries are perhaps the last long Old English text never to have been properly edited. This edition is accompanied by textual apparatuses and complete English and Latin indexes. A second volume will include introduction, translation, and explanatory notes.‎

‎One of the most skilful forgeries of the Middle Ages, the Cosmography of Aethicus Ister has puzzled scholars for over 150 years, not least because of its challenging Latinity. Written at a western centre in the first part of the eighth century, the work purports to be a heavily censored epitome made by St. Jerome of a ?cosmography? by an Istrian philosopher named Aethicus. This writer, who is otherwise unknown, describes a flat-earth universe resembling that of Cosmas Indicopleustes, then gives an eye-witness account of his travels to the ?isles of the gentiles? in the North and East. There he encounters not only savage races, but also monsters, Amazons, and other figures of mythology. Alexander the Great also figures prominently by immuring the ?unclean races,? who will escape to ravage the world at the coming of the Anti-Christ. Not all is fiction. The author?s observations on volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis will interest the scientific reader. The last part deals in coded fashion with contemporary events in the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and may provide a clue to the author?s origins. The present volume offers a new critical text, the first translation, and a detailed commentary covering every aspect of the work. Michael W.
