Cicero & Elaine Fantham (Intro. & Comm. )
CICERO'S PRO L. MURENA ORATIO
Oxford University Press. Near Fine. 2013. Softcover. 0199974535 . Very faint shelfwear else fine. ; Cicero's speech on behalf of L. Lucinius Murena newly elected to the consulship of 62 BCE but immediately prosecuted for electoral bribery is especially famous for its digressions and valuable for its insights into the complex political wrangles of the late 60s. It is however a speech more commonly excerpted and cited than read in its entirety though whether the absence of an English-language commentary is a cause or effect of that situation remains uncertain. In short a pedagogical commentary on this important and strange speech is long overdue. Distinguished Latinist Elaine Fantham's commentary is noteworthy for its ability to elucidate not only the rhetorical structure of this speech but the rationale behind Cicero's strategic decisions in creating that structure. It also calls attention to the stylistic features like word choice rhetorical figures and rhythmic effects that make the speech so effective and explains with care and precision the political social and historical considerations that shaped the prosecution and defense of the somewhat hapless defendant. This commentary includes the kind of grammatical explication required to make its riches accessible to undergraduate students of Latin. ; American Philological Association Texts & Commentaries; 240 pages . Thucydides; Jeffrey S. Rusten (Ed. )
THUCYDIDES: THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR Book II
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1991. Softcover. 0521339294 . Pages browned. Gift inscription from Rusten to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 276 pages; The second book of Thucydides is of particular interest because it contains important sections on the funeral oration the account of the plague at Athens and the obituary of Pericles. His exceptionally complex structure and techniques make Thucydides one of the most difficult as well as one of the most profound of ancient historians. Professor Rusten aims to assist students at all levels in learning to read Thucydides. The text in Greek is supported by a valuable introduction and commentary in English. In his commentary Rusten scrutinizes the historical literary and philosophical aspects. The introduction surveys biographical interpretations of the text suggests a new approach to fictive elements in the speeches and sketches the main features of Thucydidean style.; Signed by Editor . MONEY AND THE CORROSION OF POWER IN THUCYDIDES The Sicilian Expedition and Its Aftermath
University of California Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0520229843 . Gift inscription from author to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. DJ some a bit of creasing with DJ spine a bit wavy. ; 1.13 x 9.38 x 6.3 Inches; 362 pages; Wealth and power are themes that preoccupy much of Greek literature from Homer on and this book unravels the significance of these subjects in one of the most famous pieces of narrative writing from classical antiquity. Lisa Kallet brilliantly reshapes our literary and historical understanding of Thucydides' account of the disastrous Sicilian expedition of 415Ð413 b.c. a pivotal event in the Peloponnesian War. She shows that the second half of Thucydides' History contains a damning critique of Athens and its leaders for becoming corrupted by money and for failing to appropriately use their financial strength on military power. Focusing especially on the narrative techniques Thucydides used to build his argument Kallet gives a close examination of the subjects of wealth and power in this account of naval war and its aftermath and locates Thucydides' writings on these themes within a broad intellectual context. <P>Among other topics Kallet discusses Thucydides' use of metaphor his numerous intertextual references to Herodotus and Homer and thematic links he makes among the topics of money emotion and sight. Overall she shows that the subject of money constitutes a continuous thematic thread in books six through eight of the History. In addition this book takes a fresh look at familiar epigraphic evidence. Kallet's ability to combine sophisticated literary analysis with a firm grasp of Attic inscriptions sheds new light on an important work of antiquity and provides a model example of how to unravel a dense historical text to reveal its underlying literary principles of construction.; Signed by Author . THUCYDIDES MYTHISTORICUS
University of Pennsylvania Press. Very Good. 1971. Softcover. 0812210212 . Spine a little discolored. Wraps has minor rubbing. Light pencilling. Scholar's name to inner cover Carolyn Dewald. ; The title of this book needs a word of explanation if not of apology; for to any one who is accustomed to think of Thucydides as typically prosaic and nothing if not purely historical the epithet Mythistoricus may seem to carry a note of challenge or even of paradox. But the sense in which the expression has here been used is quite consistent with the historian's much-talked-of `trustworthiness' and indeed with the literal truth of every statement of fact in the whole of his work. It is possible however even for a writer of history to be something much better than trustworthy. Xenophon I suppose is honest; but his honesty makes it none the easier to read him. To read Thucydides is although certainly not easy at any rate pleasant because--trustworthiness and all--he is a great artist. It is the object of this essay to bring out an essentially artistic aspect of his work which has escaped notice partly because the history is so long that it is hard to take it in as a whole and partly because the execution of the effect is imperfect having been hindered by the good intentions with which Thucydides set out. ; Pennsylvania Paperback 1021; 252 pages; Reprint of 1907 Original. .
