‎WOMEN AND SLAVES IN GRECO-ROMAN CULTURE Differential Equations‎

‎Routledge. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415162297 . Book is fine. Tiny tear to rear DJ 1 cm. ; Women and Slaves in Classical Culture examines how ancient societies were organized around slave-holding and the subordination of women to reveal how women and slaves interacted with one another in both the cultural representations and the social realities of the Greco-Roman world. The contributors explore a broad range of evidence including: the mythical constructions of epic and drama the love poems of Ovid the Greek medical writers Augustine's autobiography a haunting account of an unnamed Roman slave the archaeological remains of a slave mining camp near Athens. They argue that the distinctions between male and female and servile and free were inextricably connected. This erudite and well-documented book provokes questions about how we can hope to recapture the experience and subjectivity of ancient women and slaves and addresses the ways in which femaleness and servility interacted with other forms of difference such as class gender and status. Women and Slaves in Classical Culture offers a stimulating and frequently controversial insight into the complexities of gender and status in the Greco-Roman world. ; 287 pages . ‎Center for Hellenic Studies. Very Good. 2006. Softcover. 067401958X . Very Light shelfwear. Scholar's name to ffep D. Gerber. ; This book probes the narratives of poets who are exiled tried or executed for their satire. Aesop fabulist and riddle warrior is assimilated to the pharmakos--the wretched human scapegoat who is expelled from the city or killed in response to a crisis--after satirizing the Delphians. In much the same way Dumezil's Indo-European heroes Starkathr and Suibhne are both warrior-poets persecuted by patron deities. ‎HELLENISTIC POETRY‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0198140401 . very Minor shelfwear. Scholar's name to ffep D. Gerber. Edgewear along top edge of DJ. ; In this study of the Hellenistic poets of the third century B. C. Hutchinson provides a much-needed picture of the poetry of the period while demonstrating its quality and vitality. The work of the Hellenistic poets in the third century BC has not only an important place in Greek literature but also a particular significance for Latin poetry. Hutchinson explores the works of such writers as Theocritus Callimachus and Apollonius of Rhodes--developing a generalconception of poetry that centers around the poets' handling of tone level and form--and offers a fresh analysis of the influence of Hellenistic poetry on the city of Rome. Despite much technical work on the texts and language of these authors - Theocritus Callimachus Apollonius Rhodius and others - previous literary criticism on most of the major figures is limited in quantity and scope. He explores the work of the individual writers in turn while developing a general conception of the poetry as a whole centred around the poets' handling of tone level and form. The book concludes with a fresh approach to the influence of Hellenistic poets in Rome. All quotations in Greek or Latin have been translated by the author. ; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 392 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. 0521056314 . Light shelfwear to DJ and book. Scholar's name to ffep D. Gerber. ; Machon was a writer of Comedies who lived and worked in Alexandria in the middle of the third century B. C. All of his work that survives is preserved in the Deipnosophistae of Athenaeus who besides two fragments of Comedies of no great importance quotes also 462 verses from a collection of anecdotes which Machon called Xpeiai. These anecdotes are written in the iambic verse of Comedy. They are concerned with the doings and sayings of courtesans parasites and musicians sometimes in relation to persons of historical importance. They are often scabrous but also not infrequently amusing; and they are of considerable interest both as documents of social history and as a type of literature which though popular in antiquity has hardly survived. The Xpeiai which present many problems of reading and interpretation have never before been separately edited. Recent editors of Athenaeus have improved the text; but to find commentaries it is necessary to go back to Casaubon's edition of Athenaeus published in 1600 and to Schweighauser's published in 1801-7. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 1; 172 pages . ‎PHILIP OF MACEDON‎

‎Ekdotike Athenon. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0892413301 . Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears. ; In autumn 1977 an unplundered royal tomb containing works of art of astounding richness and exquisite craftsmanship was discovered by Professor Manolis Andronicos at Vergina in Macedonia. The excavator's suggestion that the tomb's occupant was probably Philip son of Amyntas king of the Macedonians and Captain General of the united Greeks created an understandable sensation and aroused world-wide interest in this extraordinary personality: father of Alexander the Great one of the greatest Macedonian kings and also one of the most important political figures of antiquity. In response to this interest nine scholars all eminent specialists in the history of 4th century Greece describe the tumultuous career of Philip re-evaluate his personality and re-examine his political achievements in the light of the recent discoveries. The book closes with an account of the excavation of the fabulous treasures of the royal tombs at Vergina by Professor Andronicos. ; 254 pages . Ekdotike Athenon hardcover‎

‎THE OXFORD COMPANION TO CLASSICAL LITERATURE‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Second Revised Edition. Hardcover. 0198661215 . Foxing to textblock and endpapers and DJ flaps. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 640 pages; From Achilles's heel to the sword of Damocles Western culture teems with allusions from the rich heritage of classical literature and this new edition of The Oxford Companion to Classical Literature the first updating since Sir Paul Harvey's original edition of 1937 provides the key to these works and the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations that produced them. Substantially revising the first edition this volume condenses the findings of the most recent scholarship into highly readable prose and supplies a wealth of background information not found in Harvey's Companion. Indispensable to those studying classical literature in depth the book will be equally accessible to the non-specialist. All Greek is transliterated with translations given for all quotations from Greek and Latin. The main focus of the Companion remains the lives and works of the principal authors. Biographical entries offer the essential facts and sift the conjectural evidence while entries on the major works include discussions of the philosophical dialogues and political speeches and plot summaries of the epic poems and plays. The various literary forms--epic comedy tragedy rhetorical writing--are covered in depth supplemented by articles on the origins of the Greek and Latin alphabets and languages. The Companion also puts this literature into its societal and historical contexts including many articles on political social and artistic achievements. We learn for example about the political climate that produced the great speeches of Demosthenes and Cicero. Orators statesmen and generals stalk the pages and major battles and conquests from the time of Alexander to the fall of Rome are summarized. Articles on contemporary social mores and religious beliefs help explain literary references while the glories of philosophy science and art are celebrated from Cynics to Stoics astronomy to water-clocks and flute competitions to vase painting. Helpful maps supplement geographical entries a chronological table provides an overview of the main historical and literary events and a systematic set of cross-references links the entries. The breadth and accuracy of this volume will surely make it the standard reference book of its kind for years to come. . Oxford University Press hardcover‎
