Jocelyn, H. D.
THE TRAGEDIES OF ENNIUS The Fragments. Edited with an Introduction and Commentary
Cambridge University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521069114 . Scholar's name to ffep Robert Palmer. DJ is price-clipped. Minor chipping to DJ. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments substantial extracts from the works which quote them and where necessary a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts particularly those of Ennius in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Ovid; Peter E. Knox (Ed. )
OXFORD READINGS IN OVID
Oxford University Press. Near Fine. 2006. Softcover. 0199281165 . Very light shelfwear; No other ancient poet has had such a hold on the imagination of readers as Ovid. Through the centuries artists writers and poets have found in his work inspiration for new creative endeavors. This anthology of twenty of the most influential papers published in the last thirty years represents the broad range of critical and scholarly approaches to Ovid's work. The entire range of his poetry from the Amores to the Epistles from the Black Sea is discussed by some of the leading scholars of Latin poetry employing critical methods ranging from philology to contemporary literary theory. In an introductory essay Peter Knox surveys Ovidian scholarship over this period and locates the assembled papers within recent critical trends. Taken together the articles in this collection offer the interested reader whether experienced scholar or novice an entrée into the current critical discourse on Ovid who is at once one of the most accessible authors of classical antiquity and one of the least understood. ; Oxford Readings in Classical Studies; 541 pages . LUCRETIUS: DE RERUM NATURA Book III
Cambridge University Press. Good in Good dust jacket. 1971. Hardcover. 0521081424 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. DJ has been laminated and taped down to boards. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The De Rerum Natura of Lucretius is a sustained and impassioned protest against religious superstition and irrationality. The poem takes the form of a detailed exposition of Epicurean physical theory - an extreme materialism designed to remove and discredit popular fears of the gods death and an afterlife. Book III is generally accepted to be the finest in the whole poem; Lucretius argues there that the soul is as mortal as the body and shows that human response to the fact of mortality and death can be at once rational dignified and liberating. Professor Kenney's commentary is the first to give proper critical emphasis to the techniques and intentions of Lucretius' poetry; it can be read with profit by all students of Latin from senior school level upwards. . THE SONGS OF HOMER
Cambridge University Press. Fair with no dust jacket. 1962. Hardcover. Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. Rebound in red buckram boards. Waviness to first few pages. Some pencilling. Reading copy only; 9 x 1.25 x 6 Inches; 438 pages; The literature of the western world begins with one of its greatest achievements. The stories of the wrath of Achilles and its consequences and of the wanderings of Odysseus have been admired from ancient times to the present day. The two great epics can be read and enjoyed unreflectingly as tales of adventure; or they can be studied as literature yielding as insight and understanding grow a deeper and more permanent pleasure. Professor Kirk's book is the means to this pleasure. It is a vivid and comprehensive account of the background and development of the Homeric poems and of their quality as literature. The epics are seen primarily as oral poetry sung for centuries by illiterate singers; and from this view rises discussion of the problems of authorship and transmission. The historical archaeological and linguistic evidence is also examined; and the possible contributions of the Mycenaean period and of the subsequent Dark Age are shown in a fresh light. . Dyck, Andrew R.
A COMMENTARY ON CICERO DE OFFICIIS
University of Michigan Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0472107194 . Very faint bump to head of spine else fine. ; Toward the end of the last century Cicero's work came under attack from several angles. His political stance was sharply criticized for inconsistency by Theodor Mommsen and others his philosophical works for lack of originality. Since then scholars have come to a better understanding of the political conditions that informed the views of Mommsen and his contemporaries about Caesar and Cicero and as a result Cicero's writings have been restored to a more appropriate position in the literature and history of the Roman Republic. At the same time recent years have seen an intensive study of Hellenistic philosophy and this has shown more clearly than before that even while following Greek models Cicero nonetheless pursued his own political and in the ethical works moralistic agenda. Composed in haste shortly before Cicero's death de Officiis has exercised enormous influence over the centuries. It is all the more surprising that Andrew R. Dyck's volume is the first detailed English commentary on the work written in this century. It deals with the problems of the Latin text taking account of Michael Winterbottom's new edition it delineates the work's structure and sometimes elusive train of thought clarifies the underlying Greek and Latin concepts and provides starting points for approaching the philosophical and historical problems that de Officiis raises. A work of major importance for classicists philosophers and ancient historians this Commentary will be an invaluable companion to all readers of Cicero's last philosophical work. ; 760 pages . Cambridge University Press. Good with no dust jacket. 1985. Hardcover. 0521264952 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. Corners edgeworn. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 26; 284 pages; Callimachus was one of the most important and influential writers in the ancient world. He was the outstanding poet of the Hellenistic period and had a profound effect on the subsequent course of Greek and Roman literature. The hymns are intricate allusive and difficult poetry and need elucidation for the modern reader. 'The Fifth Hymn: The Bath of Pallas' is considered by many to be Callimachus' finest surviving poem. Anthony Bulloch has established a new text of the poem which is printed here with facing English translation. The substantial introduction and full commentary aim to introduce the poem to a wide audience and to help the modern reader to reconstruct what the ancient reader may have taken for granted as part of the crucial and intellectual background and to achieve an informed and sensitive appreciation of the poem in its full perspective. This will be welcomed by Greek scholars and those interested in Greek and Roman poetry. . Cambridge University Press hardcover
