Graf, Fritz; Philip, Franklin
MAGIC IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
Harvard University Press. Very Good. 2003. Softcover. 0674541537 . 1 page corner creased. Mild creasing to spine. Sticker residue to front wrap. ; Revealing Antiquity; 1.05 x 8.51 x 5.8 Inches; 320 pages; Ancient Greeks and Romans often turned to magic to achieve personal goals. Magical rites were seen as a route for direct access to the gods for material gains as well as spiritual satisfaction. In this fascinating survey of magical beliefs and practices from the sixth century B. C. E. Through late antiquity Fritz Graf sheds new light on ancient religion. Evidence of widespread belief in the efficacy of magic is pervasive: the contemporaries of Plato and Aristotle placed voodoo dolls on graves in order to harm business rivals or attract lovers. The Twelve Tables of Roman Law forbids the magical transference of crops from one field to another. Graves wells and springs throughout the Mediterranean have yielded vast numbers of Greek and Latin curse tablets. And ancient literature abounds with scenes of magic from necromancy to love spells. Graf explores the important types of magic in Greco-Roman antiquity describing rites and explaining the theory behind them. And he characterizes the ancient magician: his training and initiation social status and presumed connections with the divine world. With trenchant analysis of underlying conceptions and vivid account of illustrative cases Graf gives a full picture of the practice of magic and its implications. He concludes with an evaluation of the relation of magic to religion. Magic in the Ancient World offers an unusual look at ancient Greek and Roman thought and a new understanding of popular recourse to the supernatural. . Harvard University Press paperback

Bowersock G. W.
FICTION AS HISTORY Nero to Julian
University of California Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0520088247 . DJ spine sunned. 1 tiny chip to DJ. ; Sather Classical Lectures; 0.86 x 9.34 x 6.24 Inches; 180 pages; Using pagan fiction produced in Greek and Latin during the early Christian era G. W. Bowersock investigates the complex relationship between "historical" and "fictional" truths. This relationship preoccupied writers of the second century a time when apparent fictions about both past and present were proliferating at an astonishing rate and history was being invented all over again. With force and eloquence Bowersock illuminates social attitudes of this period and persuasively argues that its fiction was influenced by the emerging Christian Gospel narratives. Enthralling in its breadth and enhanced by two erudite appendices this is a book that will be warmly welcomed by historians and interpreters of literature. . University of California Press hardcover

A. G. Leventis Foundation. Good. 2004. First Edition. Hardcover. 9963560571 . Many ink notes in black and red ink. Some edgewear to wraps. ; These twenty-five papers form the proceedings of a conference held at the Foundation Anastasios G Leventis in Nicosia Cyprus in 2002 which reflected the current revival of interest in Herodotus. As Vassos Karageorghis explains in his eloquent if brief introduction we need Herodotus as `a social anthropologist a philosopher/companion' to help us to reassess the Greek world `with impartial serenity with wisdom and good humour'. These well-presented essays focus on Herodotus presentation of Greeks and barbarians across the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean and discuss how this throws light on ancient Greek attitudes to themselves to other cultures to religion to politics and to war. The papers are wide-ranging and cover Herodotus' treatment of Cyprus Amathus Athens the Phoenicians and Scythia his principles and attitudes towards violence his realisation of the sacred landscape his rhetoric of slavery his strategies and use of lies and his accounts of war. ; 423 pages . Gelzer, Mattias
CAESAR Politician and Statesman
Basil Blackwell. Fair with no dust jacket. 1968. Hardcover. 0631104305 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. Minor pencilling. Boards are reinforced with library tape. Reading copy only. ; In 1912 a young scholar published a slim volume investigating the social structure of the late Roman Republic which was in due course to transform the study of Roman history. The author Professor Gelzer went on to hold the Chair of Ancient History at Frankfurt and to become the greatest German-speaking historian of the Roman Republic since Mommsen. In 1921 he published his Caesar which has by now gone through six editions in Germany and is still the standard account in any language of Caesar and his age. It amply fulfills the author's intent "to give the educated public a lively picture of the complete political career of one of the great statesmen of the past. " Based on a conscientious evaluation of the abundant source materials--primarily the writings of Caesar and his contemporaries--Professor Gelzer's portrait renders Caesar in heroic proportions destined and determined from the beginning to overthrow a corrupt aristocracy. The sixth edition 1960 brought up to date and provided with full annotations by the author is the basis of this translation which for the first time makes the work available in English. With Professor Gelzer's approval some minor errors have been corrected both in the text and in the chronological table and the map at the end of the book and an analytical index of names has been added. ; 0.85 x 9.01 x 6.06 Inches; 368 pages . THE ANCIENT ECONOMY
University of California Press. Very Good. 1973. Softcover. 0520024362 . Wraps a bit browned. Corner creasing to 1 page. ; Sather Classical Lectures 43; 222 pages; "Technical progress economic growth productivity even efficiency have not been significant goals since the beginning of time " declares M. I. Finley in his classic work. The states of the ancient Mediterranean world had no recognizable real-property market never fought a commercially inspired war witnessed no drive to capital formation and assigned the management of many substantial enterprises to slaves and ex-slaves. In short to study the economies of the ancient world one must begin by discarding many premises that seemed self-evident before Finley showed that they were useless or misleading. These sagacious fertile and occasionally combative essays are just as electrifying today as when Finley first wrote them. . University of California Press paperback

COURTESANS AND FISHCAKES The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens
Harper Perennial. Very Good. 1999. Softcover. 0060977663 . Pages tanned. Minor shelfwear. ; 1.25 x 10 x 6.75 Inches; 371 pages; British historian Davidson takes us inside classical Greece's brothels bedrooms drinking parties and banquets in this rarefied scholarly inquiry. His aim is not merely to depict Athenians as pleasure seekers but to overturn the current notion purveyed by Michel Foucault and others that Athens was a "phallocratic" society permeated with an ethos of penetration and domination a homosexual-leaning culture polarized between adult male citizens and all others: Slaves women boys foreigners. He largely succeeds on all counts bringing to convivial life a predominantly heterosexual society where classes mingled easily; cultured courtesans bedded leading figures like Pericles and Alcibiades; and wives participated fully in sexual pleasures. Drawing on ancient treatises pamphlets comic plays poems and speeches Davidson investigates the classical Greeks' indulgences including their mania for eating fish A luxury viewed as hedonistic And their tolerance for booze and sex though sex addicts were considered to have a lower capacity to resist the natural pleasures. His intriguing study serves up a banquet of arcane lore. . Harper Perennial paperback

GREEK AND ROMAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
Oxford University Press. Very Good. 2011. Softcover. 0199233500 . Light shelfwear. ; Greek and Roman Historiography is a collection of important articles from the last thirty years which treat the ways in which the ancient Greeks and Romans thought about and wrote their histories. Six of these articles have been translated into English for the first time. Avoiding issues such as sources and reliability which were the concern of earlier scholarship the contributors focus much more on how the ancients themselves engaged with their past: the relationship between myth and history; the role of memory and oral tradition as they shaped both Greek and Roman notions of the past; the role of the historian in giving form and meaning to his history; and the different notions of historical truth and falsehood. A specially written introduction places the essays in the larger context of earlier and more recent trends in the study of Greek and Roman historiography. ; Oxford Readings In Classical Studies; 21.6 X 14 X 2.6 centimeters; 510 pages . WOMEN IN THE ANCIENT WORLD The Arethusa Papers
State University of New York Press. Very Good. 1984. Softcover. 0873957733 . Creasing to spine. Edgewear to spine with minor colour loss. ; One of the reasons for the study of the Greek and Roman classics is their perpetual relevance. In no other area can this position be more clearly defended than in the investigation of the feminine condition for it was here that basic attitudes derogatory to the sex were molded by legal and social systems by philosophers and poets and by the thinking of men long since gone. Women in the Ancient World brings together essays that examine philosophy social history literature and art and that extend from the early Greek period through the Roman Empire. Their wide range of critical perspectives throws new light on the personal political socio-economic and cultural position of women; 377 pages . State University of New York Press paperback

BLACK ATHENA REVISITED
The University of North Carolina Press. Very Good. 1996. Softcover. 0807845558 . Very minor shelfwear. ; 544 pages; Was Western civilization founded by ancient Egyptians and Phoenicians Can the ancient Egyptians usefully be called black Did the ancient Greeks borrow religion science and philosophy from the Egyptians and Phoenicians Have scholars ignored the Afroasiatic roots of Western civilization as a result of racism and anti-Semitism In this collection of twenty essays leading scholars in a broad range of disciplines confront the claims made by Martin Bernal in Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In that work Bernal proposed a radical reinterpretation of the roots of classical civilization contending that ancient Greek culture derived from Egypt and Phoenicia and that European scholars have been biased against the notion of Egyptian and Phoenician influence on Western civilization. The contributors to this volume argue that Bernal's claims are exaggerated and in many cases unjustified. Topics covered include race and physical anthropology; the question of an Egyptian invasion of Greece; the origins of Greek language philosophy and science; and racism and anti-Semitism in classical scholarship. In the conclusion to the volume the editors propose an entirely new scholarly framework for understanding the relationship between the cultures of the ancient Near East and Greece and the origins of Western civilization. . Munson Rosaria Vignolo
TELLING WONDERS Ethnographic and Political Discourse in the Work of Herodotus
University of Michigan Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 0472112031 . Book has very minor shelfwear else fine pencil bibliography notes to ffep. DJ has 1 closed tear 2 cm to front panel and light creasing. ; As he explores the causes of the East-West conflict from its most remote antecedents Herodotus includes conflicting traditions about different historical periods as well as apparently tangential descriptions of the customs of faraway peoples. What was his aim in combining such diverse material Rosaria Vignolo Munson argues that Herodotus' aim was two-fold: to use historical narrative to illuminate the present and to describe barbarian customs so that the Greeks might understand themselves. Herodotus assumes the role of advisor to his audience acting as a master of metaphor and oracular speech and as an intellectual fully aware of new philosophical and political trends. By comparing interpreting and evaluating facts through time and space or simply by pointing them out as objects of "wonder" he teaches that correct political action is linked to an appropriate approach to foreigners and additional "others." Munson relies on traditional scholarship and modern studies in narratology and related critical fields to distinguish between narrative and metanarrative providing a framework for analyzing the construction of Herodotus' discourse and his presentation of himself through it. ; 325 pages .
