Moore, Timothy J.
THE THEATER OF PLAUTUS Playing to the Audience
University of Texas Press. Near Fine. 1998. Paperback. 0292752172 . Very faint shelfwear. ; The relationship between actors and spectators has been of perennial interest to playwrights. The Roman playwright Plautus ca. 200 BCE was particularly adept at manipulating this relationship. Plautus allowed his actors to acknowledge freely the illusion in which they were taking part to elicit laughter through humorous asides and monologues and simultaneously to flatter and tease the spectators. These metatheatrical techniques are the focus of Timothy J. Moore's innovative study of the comedies of Plautus. The first part of the book examines Plautus' techniques in detail while the second part explores how he used them in the plays Pseudolus Amphitruo Curculio Truculentus Casina and Captivi. Moore shows that Plautus employed these dramatic devices not only to entertain his audience but also to satirize aspects of Roman society such as shady business practices and extravagant spending on prostitutes and to challenge his spectators' preconceptions about such issues as marriage and slavery. These findings forge new links between Roman comedy and the social and historical context of its performance. ; 275 pages . University of Texas Press paperback

MYTH AND POETRY IN LUCRETIUS
Cambridge University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0521451353 . Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Lucretius' De Rerum Natura is a philosophical epic devoted to the exposition of Epicurean philosophy. Since the system was materialistic and highly critical of myth and poetry Lucretius' use of mythological language and imagery is surprising. Dr. Gale considers the poem against the background of earlier and contemporary views of myth and suggests that Lucretius was well aware of the tension between his two roles as poet and philosopher and attempted to resolve it by developing a bold and innovative theory of myth and poetry. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 276 pages . LAW SEXUALITY AND SOCIETY The Enforcement of Morals in Classical Athens
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1994. Softcover. 0521466423 . Minor creasing to front wrap. ; Centering on the examination of the social and legal context of adultery homosexuality impiety and the public-private dichotomy in Athenian society this book attempts to examine the problems of social control and the regulation of sexuality in a way that will be of interest to a broad readership. It uses a comparative approach to show how the examination of such issues can deepen our understanding of classical Athens particularly in regard to the role of law in society. Further it argues that this historical investigation can in turn enrich our general appreciation of the relation of social and legal norms and the roles they play in regulating complex social practices such as those associated with sexuality morals and the family. This illuminating book develops a view of classical Athenian society that emphasizes the study of social control as the dynamic interplay of legal and social norms within the context of ideology and practice. ; 0.87 x 9.33 x 6.22 Inches; 271 pages . STOIC PHILOSOPHY
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1977. Softcover. 0521292018 . Light tanning to pages. Minor shelfwear. ; Attempts to present a series of Stoic philosophical ideas in some detail in order to give a clearer picture of what Stoic philosophy is about and encourage the view that the Stoics were serious philosophers. ; 310 pages; Literature on the Stoa has recently concentrated on historical accounts of the development of the school and on Stoicism as a social movement. Professor Rists approach is to examine in detail a series of philosophical problems discussed by leading members of the Stoic school. He is not concerned with social history or with the influence of Stoicism on popular beliefs in the Ancient world but with such questions as the relation between Stoicism and the thought of Aristotle the meaning and purpose of such Stoic paradoxes as all sins are equal and the philosophical interrelation of Stoic physics and ethics. There are chapters on aspects of Stoic logic and on the thought of particular thinkers such as Panaetius and Posidonius but ethical problems occupy the centre of the stage. . Hunter, Richard L.
THE NEW COMEDY OF GREECE AND ROME
Cambridge University Press. Good. 1985. Softcover. 0521316529 . Pen markings to margins of some pages. ; 196 pages; In writing this book on the plays of New Comedy the author's aim is to fill a gap in the existing literature by concentrating on what one might look for in watching and reading these plays and why such an exercise might be pleasurable. The social comedy of Menander Plautus and Terence provided a style of comic drama which was to prove the root of all subsequent western comedy. Dr Hunter gives a literary account of this drama placing it in its ancient context and then ranging over a number of specific topics and themes: the dramatic craft of the poets their exploration of how to give variety to stereotyped plots and characters the presentation of women the use of language and themes from tragedy the place of moralising and philosophy. Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1979. Softcover. 0521296838 . Very light shelfwear. ; 264 pages; Tibullus was one of the leading poets of Augustan Rome. Professor Cairns examines in detail aspects of Tibullus' poetic craftsmanship - his learning his interest in the meanings of words his use of suspense and deception his control of the structures of his elegies - and demonstrates the original qualities of Tibullus' verse. This examination is carried out by relating Tibullus' work at all points to the Hellenistic poetic tradition and the literary genres and conventions it developed.
