‎Routledge. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1997. Paperback. 0415099609 . 1 page with corner creasing. Else very minor shelfwear. ; Inventing Ancient Culture is an exciting introduction to new approaches to the classics. There is a tendency for those interested in the broader field of cultural studies to claim that modern perceptions of self modern affectivities and modern societal and institutional structures date from the Enlightenment. This volume will vigorously challenge this misperception. Contributors to the volume address issues including the extent of which cultural and social forms change through time and the extent or otherwise of change in cultural systems since antiquity. ; 248 pages . ‎CLASSICAL GREECE Ancient Histories and Modern Archaeologies‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1995. Softcover. 0521456789 . A bit of hard creasing to wraps. ; New Directions in Archaeology; 258 pages; The archaeology of classical Greece developed in the shadow of Greek historical scholarship. Many modern developments in archaeology have been neglected and classical archaeology has become something of a backwater. They insist that this complex literate and highly unusual society poses important questions for archaeologists of other regions. . Cambridge University Press paperback‎

‎COURTESANS AND FISHCAKES The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens‎

‎Harpercollins Publishers. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0002555913 . Pages tanned. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; 1.25 x 10 x 6.75 Inches; 371 pages; British historian Davidson takes us inside classical Greece's brothels bedrooms drinking parties and banquets in this rarefied scholarly inquiry. His aim is not merely to depict Athenians as pleasure seekers but to overturn the current notion purveyed by Michel Foucault and others that Athens was a "phallocratic" society permeated with an ethos of penetration and domination a homosexual-leaning culture polarized between adult male citizens and all others: Slaves women boys foreigners. He largely succeeds on all counts bringing to convivial life a predominantly heterosexual society where classes mingled easily; cultured courtesans bedded leading figures like Pericles and Alcibiades; and wives participated fully in sexual pleasures. Drawing on ancient treatises pamphlets comic plays poems and speeches Davidson investigates the classical Greeks' indulgences including their mania for eating fish A luxury viewed as hedonistic And their tolerance for booze and sex though sex addicts were considered to have a lower capacity to resist the natural pleasures. His intriguing study serves up a banquet of arcane lore. . Harpercollins Publishers hardcover‎

Competitive delights: the social effects of the expanded programme of contests in post-Kleisthenic Athens Nick Fisher Part III: Competition in Rome: 8. Lotteries and elections: containing elite competition in Venice and Rome Henrik Mouritsen 9. Keeping up with the Joneses: competitive display within the Roman villa landscape Hannah Platts 10. Competitiveness and anti-competitiveness in Philostratus’ Lives of the Sophists Jason Konig; 320 pages; Ancient peoples like modern spent much of their lives engaged in and thinking about competitions: both organised competitions with rules audiences and winners such as Olympic and gladiatorial games and informal indefinite often violent competition for fundamental goals such as power wealth and honour. The varied papers in this book form a case for viewing competition for superiority as a major force in ancient history including the earliest human societies and the Assyrian and Aztec empires. Papers on Greek history explore the idea of competitiveness as peculiarly Greek the intense and complex quarrel at the heart of Homers Iliad and the importance of formal competitions in the creation of new political and social identities in archaic Sicyon and classical Athens. Papers on the Roman world shed fresh light on Republican elections through a telling parallel from renaissance Venice on modes of competitive display of wealth and power evident in elite villas in Italy in the imperial period and on the ambiguities in the competitive self-representations of athletes sophists and emperors. . ‎THE OXFORD HISTORY OF CLASSICAL ART‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0198143869 . Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has minor shelfwear and creasing. ; 1.1 x 10.81 x 8.62 Inches; 444 pages; The art and architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome lies at the heart of the classical tradition of the Western world. Their legacy is so familiar as to have become commonplace. The legacy may appear simple but the development of classical art in antiquity was complex and remarkably swift. It ran from near abstraction in 8th-century BC Greece through years of observation and learning from the arts of the non-Greek world to the East and in Egypt to the brilliance of the classical revolution of the 5th century which revealed attitudes and styles undreamt of by other cultures. After Alexander the Great this became the art of an empire readily learned by Rome and further developed according to the Romans' special character and needs until it provided the idiom for the imaging of Christianity. In this book the story of this pageant of the arts is told by five leading scholars. Their aim has been to demonstrate how the arts served very different societies and patrons; the roles and objectives of the artists; the way in which the classical style was disseminated far beyond the borders of the Greek and Roman world; and the splendour and quality of the arts themselves. . Contributing to a vast tradition of scholarship which dates back to the discovery of the Mosaic in 1831 Cohen here engages with but departs from a core of positivist assumptions that characterize this body of literature. In this study she examines the Mosaic as it may have functioned in two different contexts first as a Greek painting of the fourth century B.C. and then as a Roman mosaic of ca. 100 B.C. . ‎FATHERS AND SONS IN ATHENS Ideology and Society in the Era of the Peloponnesian War‎

‎Princeton University Press. Very Good. 1997. Softcover. 0691015910 . Very minor shelfwear. ; Xv 283pp. Father-son conflict was for the Athenians a topic of widespread interest that touched the core of both family and political life particularly during times of social upheaval. In this vivid account of the intermingling of politics and the private sphere in classical Athens Barry Strauss explores the tensions experienced by a society that cherished both youthful independence and paternal authority. He examines father-son relations within the Athenian family and the way these relations were represented in a wide variety of political and literary texts. His inquiry reveals that representations of patricide father beating and son murdering did not necessarily coincide with actual instances but rather served as metaphors for intergenerational tensions fueled by democracy the sophists and the Peloponnesian War. ; 283 pages . ‎ART IN THE HELLENISTIC AGE‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1986. Softcover. 0521276721 . Creasing to wraps. Light chipping to corners. Pencilling to a couple of pages. ; 344 pages; 'The best reason to study Hellenistic art is for its own sake' writes Professor Pollitt in the Preface to Art in the Hellenistic Age. 'But' he continues 'I would suggest that there is an additional quality that should make the art of the Hellenistic age of particular interest to modern audiences: the fact that in background and content it was the product of an age in many ways similar to our own . The result of the historical conditions of the age was an art which like much modern art was heterogenous often cosmopolitan increasingly individualistic and frequently elite in its appeal'. This book is an interpretative history of Greek art during the Hellenistic period - i.e. from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the establishment of the Roman Empire at the end of the first century BC - which also explores ways in which that art is an expression of the cultural experience and aspirations of the Hellenistic age. . ‎BLACKS IN ANTIQUITY Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience‎

‎Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. Very Good. 1971. Softcover. 0674076265 . Shelfwear to book. Faint creasing to wraps. Spine sunned. Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Light pencilling to a few pages. ; Xxii 364pp illustrated. The Africans who came to ancient Greece and Italy participated in an important chapter of classical history. Although evidence indicated that the alien dark- and black-skinned people were of varied tribal and geographic origins the Greeks and Romans classified many of them as Ethiopians. In an effort to determine the role of black people in ancient civilization Mr. Snowden examines a broad span of Greco-Roman experience--from the Homeric era to the age of Justinian--focusing his attention on the Ethiopians as they were known to the Greeks and Romans. The author dispels unwarranted generalizations about the Ethiopians contending that classical references to them were neither glorifications of a mysterious people nor caricatures of rare creatures. Mr. Snowden has probed literary epigraphical papyrological numismatic and archaeological sources and has considered modern anthropological and sociological findings on pertinent racial and intercultural problems. He has drawn directly upon the widely scattered literary evidence of classical and early Christian writers and has synthesized extensive and diverse material. Along with invaluable reference notes Mr. Snowden has included over 140 illustrations which depict the Negro as the Greeks and Romans conceived of him in mythology and religion and observed him in a number of occupations--as servant diplomat warrior athlete and performer among others. Presenting an exceptionally comprehensive historical description of the first major encounter of Europeans with dark and black Africans Mr. Snowden found that the black man in a predominantly white society was neither romanticized nor scorned--that the Ethiopian in classical antiquity was considered by pagan and Christian without prejudice. ; 364 pages . ‎LAW SEXUALITY AND SOCIETY The Enforcement of Morals in Classical Athens‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1994. Softcover. 0521466423 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. Minor shelfwear. ; Centering on the examination of the social and legal context of adultery homosexuality impiety and the public-private dichotomy in Athenian society this book attempts to examine the problems of social control and the regulation of sexuality in a way that will be of interest to a broad readership. It uses a comparative approach to show how the examination of such issues can deepen our understanding of classical Athens particularly in regard to the role of law in society. Further it argues that this historical investigation can in turn enrich our general appreciation of the relation of social and legal norms and the roles they play in regulating complex social practices such as those associated with sexuality morals and the family. This illuminating book develops a view of classical Athenian society that emphasizes the study of social control as the dynamic interplay of legal and social norms within the context of ideology and practice. ; 0.87 x 9.33 x 6.22 Inches; 271 pages . ‎SEXUAL CULTURE IN ANCIENT GREECE‎

‎University of Oklahoma Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 080613237X . Pencilling and a few notes in pencil by Jenifer Neils. DJ has long scratch to front panel and chipping to extremities. Includes letter from Wolfgang Haase tipped in with handwriting by him requesting a book review from Neils. ; Erotic sensibility pervaded the art literature and social mores of the ancient Greeks. Early religious figurines emphasize sexual features and written documents confirm that the people worshiped deities with strong sexual characteristics. Out of this background came a distinctively Greek sexual culture--guilt-free graphically frank and uninhibited by taboos that became entrenched in the Middle Ages. Illustrated with art from the earliest agricultural periods as well as from the Archaic Classical Hellenistic and Roman eras SEXUAL CULTURE OF ANCIENT GREECE presents nine successive stages of Greek sexual culture. Daniel H. Garrison uses well-known passages from Biblical Near Eastern and Greek literature to show the centrality of sexual culture in the civilizations of the area particularly as they reflect the traditions passed on to the Western world. The only comprehensive overview of Greek sexual culture this book is a valuable guide to the origins of our complex attitudes regarding marriage the rights of women homosexuality and the role of eroticism in art religion ethics and literature. ; Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture; 358 pages . ‎THE NEW POLITICIANS OF FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS‎

‎Princeton University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1971. Hardcover. 0691035393 . Light shelfwear to book. DJ has light chipping. DJ a bit yellowed. DJ is price-clipped. ; 218 pages; After the death of Pericles a new breed of politicians--men like Cleon Cleophon and Hyperbolus--came to power in Athens. Rejecting the traditional source of political support the bonds of friendship philia in favor of direct appeals to the people demos they signaled the emergence of a new pattern of politics. The author traces the development of this new pattern--often misunderstood often branded "demagogy" by both ancient and modern writers--by investigating the nature of political and social organization in Athens and the vocabulary of Greek politics. . ‎THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0521421640 . Scholar's initial to inner cover Jenifer Neils. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages . ‎THE IMAGERY OF THE ATHENIAN SYMPOSIUM‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2012. Hardcover. 1107011027 . Minor pencil underlining and notes by Jenifer Neils to a few pages. Else book has very minor shelfwear. ; The late sixth and early fifth centuries BC were a dynamic time in the history of the symposium and hundreds of vase paintings from this period show people engaged in sympotic activities. Most scholars have understood these images as illustrations of contemporary Athenian practices but such an interpretation cannot account for the enormous variety of settings costumes and participants in the images nor is it easily reconciled with recent methodological developments in the study of vase painting. Noting the close link between the symposium and the polis in ancient thought this book approaches the images not as documents of contemporary sympotic practice but as vehicles for exploring what it meant to be a Greek community. It argues that many of the images depict imagined ancestral symposia and that they thus shed new light on how the Athenians envisioned the history of the symposium and its importance to their city. ; 10.1 X 7.2 X 1.0 inches; 233 pages .
