THE EMPIRE OF THE TETRARCHS Imperial Pronouncements and Government AD 284-324

Else Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Inner cover has two institution plates from School of History and Archaeology--Ancient History Library-- No other markings. Minor shelfwear to book. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.11 x 8.74 x 5.7 Inches; 424 pages; The era of Diocletan and Constantine is a significant period for the Roman empire with far-reaching administrative changes that established the structure of government for three hundred years - a time when the Christian church passed from persecution to imperial favour. It is also a complex period of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers the tetrarchs. This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition through a study of the the pronouncement that the emperors and their officials produced drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes Christian authors inscritpions and papyri. The study covers the format composition and promulgation of documents and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally Dr Corcoran assesses how effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors. . Oxford University Press hardcover

CHANGES IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE Essays in the Ordinary
Princeton University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0691036012 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 416 pages; Written by one of the foremost historians of the Roman Empire this collection of both new and previously published essays forms a colorful picture of daily life in the Mediterranean world between A.D. 50 and 450. Here for example the author applies statistical analysis to broad groups of people on matters ranging from justice through medicine to language. In so doing he is able to substantiate general statements about routines in ordinary people's behavior and to detect within these routines the very changes that constitute history. Such analysis also shows how this era benefits from the same historiographical approaches that have so successfully elucidated sociocultural phenomena in other periods. Drawing from statistical analysis and many other historical approaches these essays on popular mores in the Roman Empire cover such topics as language and art acculturation thought and religion sex and gender cruelty and slavery and aspects of class and power relations. The author introduces the collection with several essays on historical method as it pertains to the richness of documentation and variety to be found in the region and period chosen. . CONSTANTINE AND THE BISHOPS The Politics of Intolerance
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0801862183 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; Ancient Society and History; 1.68 x 8.76 x 8.78 Inches; 632 pages; Historians who viewed imperial Rome in terms of a conflict between pagans and Christians have often regarded the emperor Constantine's conversion as the triumph of Christianity over paganism. But in Constantine and the Bishops historian H. A. Drake offers a fresh and more nuanced understanding of Constantine's rule and especially of his relations with Christians. Constantine Drake suggests was looking not only for a god in whom to believe but also a policy he could adopt. Uncovering the political motivations behind Constantine's policies Drake shows how those policies were constructed to ensure the stability of the empire and fulfill Constantine's imperial duty in securing the favor of heaven. Despite the emperor's conversion to Christianity Drake concludes Rome remained a world filled with gods and with men seeking to depose rivals from power. A book for students and scholars of ancient history and religion Constantine and the Bishops shows how Christian belief motivated and gave shape to imperial rule. . Oxford University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0198142765 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Light shelfwear to book. ; Special edition for Sandpiper Books. In the quest for the original Homeric text Bolling's strategy is to begin not with an 'Ur-text' as some earlier scholars had attempted but with the poems as they appear at the beginning of our tradition and to 'remove the accretions stratum by stratum as in the excavation of a buried temple'. He attempts to reconstruct the earlier texts of the Iliad and Odyssey by not only identifying and eliminating interpolations but by understanding the traditions of the earlier interpolators and editors and thus establishing a standard for future work. ; 259 pages . 'BREAD AND CIRCUSES' Euergetism and Municipal Patronage in Roman Italy
Routledge. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0415146895 . 0.65 x 9.76 x 6.28 Inches; 192 pages; Cities in the ancient world relied on private generosity to provide many basic amenities as well as expecting leading citizens to pay for 'bread and circuses' - free food and public entertainment. This collection of essays by leading scholars from the UK and USA explores the important phenomenon of benefaction and public patronage in Roman Italy. Ranging from the late republican period to the later Roman Empire the contributions cover a wide range of topics including the impact of benefactions and benefactors on the urban development of Roman Italy on cultural and economic activity and on the changing role of games and festivals in Roman society. They also explore the relationship between communities and their benefactors whether these were local notables senators or the emperor himself and examine how the nature of benefaction changed under the Empire. . Routledge. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0415008042 . Minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; In this book David Braund offers a significantly different perspective upon the history of Roman Britain. Rather than relying on archaeology the author concentrates on the literary evidence drawing a colorful picture of the social and political context of Roman imperialism. The study discusses Roman theories of imperialism as well as the intellectual and political atmosphere within which Caesar mounted his invasions of Britain in 55 and 54 B. C. Braund shows how the ideologies and power structures at work in Rome fundamentally shaped politics and society in Roman Britain.
