Munn, Mark H.
THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
University of California Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0520076850 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. . ROME IN THE PYRENEES Lugdunum and the Convenae from the First Century B. C. to the Seventh Century A. D.
Routledge. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 0415426863 . Very light shelfwear else Fine. ; Routledge Monographs in Classical Studies; 184 pages; Rome in the Pyrenees is a unique treatment in English of the archaeological and historical evidence for an important Roman town in Gaul Lugdunum in the French Pyrenees and for its surrounding people the Convenae. The book opens with the creation of the Convenae by Pompey the Great in the first century B. C. And runs down to the great Frankish siege in A. D. 585 and its aftermath. Now the town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Lugdunum is one of the best-known Roman towns in Gaul with a rich selection of monuments at the town itself and important remains in the countryside such as the classic villa at Montmaurin or the votive altars cinerary caskets and sarcophagi in the local marble. The book traces how the Convenae used their marble to help create their identity invisible before Pompey but amongst the richest and most distinctive in Gaul by the second century A. D. Drawing on his own excavations at Saint-Bertrand and the extensive earlier and recent work there Simon Esmonde Cleary combines a clear description of the buildings and monuments of Lugdunum and of its countryside with a discussion of what they can tell us about the impact of Rome on this remote corner of its empire. Contains a guide to the visible Roman remains of the area. . Routledge hardcover

ZWISCHEN MONARCHIE UND REPUBLIK Gesellschaftliche Stabilisierungsleistungen Und Politische Transformationspotentiale in Den Antiken Stadtstaaten
Franz Steiner Verlag. Fine with no dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 3515097821 . Historia - Einzelschriften 217; 236 pages; English summary: The contrast between monarchical and republican constitution is one of the key factors of political processes and discourses in ancient communities. However the sharp dichotomy between republic and monarchy at least according to present published research seems to more closely back the needs of those groups backing Republican orders than was actually the case in reality. The aim of this volume is to develop an interpretive model that takes the openness of dynamics and development of such processes seriously. It is not enough to purely reconstruct historical causalities. Instead individual examples from Greek and Roman history are used to study the risk posed by the respective populations' steps toward stabilization in close connection with their potential for political transformation. German text. . Beecroft, Alexander
AUTHORSHIP AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN EARLY GREECE AND CHINA Patterns of Literary Circulation
Cambridge University Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 0521194318 . 338 pages; In this book Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece Homeric epic and lyric and China the Canon of Songs evolved from being local oral and anonymous to being textualized interpreted and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato Aristotle Herodotus Confucius and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by naïve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE EPYLLION FROM THEOCRITUS TO OVID
Garland Publishing. Fine. 1978. Softcover. 0824029666 . Reprint of 1931 edition. ; The Garland Library of Latin Poetry; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 284 pages; "Epyllion" is the term coined by modern scholars for a relatively short poem on a mythological theme otherwise appropriate to longer epic. One of its recurrent characteristics is "ekphrasis" the telling of one myth encapsulated within the context of another and the two thematically or symbolically linked to offer subtle comparison and contrast. The most persistent modes of "ekphrasis" are narrative by a character form or the description of myth depicted on a work of art used in the context of the "outer" myth. The phenomenon has its origins in Homeric epic the shield of Achilles but was refined in the Hellenistic period by Callimachus and Theocritus and taken up by the neoterics Catullus 64. Its methods were absorbed back into long epic and form a dominant characteristic of Ovid's interweaving of myths in the "Metamorphoses". This book was originally published in 1931 and presents a chronological account of "epyllion" in English. . Garland Publishing paperback

The author transposes a historical and theoretical disciplinary matrix Rusen / Blanken to a subject of ancient history and brings historical culture and social practice into systematic context showing alternating and coexisting historical paradigms. By including the semantic dimension of research contributions into the scientific and historical reconstruction language and thought patterns of researchers become transparent. Small white dots to back board else Fine. Inscribed to Fergus Millar from the editors. ; 261 pages; The empire created by Alexander the Great's general Seleucus constituted the largest Hellenistic kingdom of the successor states: yet this is the first substantial treatment of Seleucid history to appear for fifty years. The authors approach this important and successful state from new perspectives seeing it as part of the Middle Eastern world rather than solely in Greco-Roman terms and arguing that the Seleucid state is best understood as heir to the great Achaemenid Persian empire and earlier Middle Eastern states. They investigate the economies social structures political systems and cultures of the many peoples making up the empire and analyze in the context of colonialism and imperialism such evidence as exists for cultural changes including Hellenization. The book makes accessible the great variety of new and important documents that have been recently discovered. It will be welcomed by students teachers and all readers with an interest in Hellenistic and Middle Eastern history. ; Signed by Editors . Gerald Duckworth & Company hardcover

Very minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. .
