POIESIS: BIBLIOGRAFIA DELLA POESIA GRECA 2006 2 VOLUME SET Volumes VII: I & II
Fabrizio Serra Editore. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2007. Softcover. 8862271735 . 2 volume set. Wrapped in plastic. The origin of Poiesis springs from the desire to provide those who cherish an interest in the study of Greek and Byzantine poetry with a tool to search for relevant information enabling readers to undertake a preliminary selection of material to be utilized and also facilitating in-depth study and further research. The Journal offers a yearly survey of all publications in the field of antiquities books journals dissertations miscellanies that are totally or partly devoted to authors and themes of Greek poetry. A fairly extensive article is dedicated to each cited publication from book-length works to brief notes of text criticism thereby enabling readers to gain a clear understanding of the content of the individual studies. The decision to restrict the scope of inquiry to poetry is motivated by the historical distinction between prose and verse that embodies the essence of the literary system in ancient Greece where the canon of the genera is founded on the difference between forms. Poiesis thus aims to combine in a single working tool the best characteristics of the two traditional bibliographic typologies: completeness of information which is an intrinsic feature of bibliographical listings and adequate description of the contents of each single study an intrinsic feature of wider-ranging interpretative surveys. Editorial responsibility for individual authors and sectors of Greek poetic literature is entrusted to sub-editors with a specific background in the given subjects. A Byzantine section is coordinated by Enrico V. Maltese. ; 2 Volume Set; Vol. 7.1-2; 664 pages; Pp. XXXIV-480 I & Pp. XXXII-481-664 II . Fabrizio Serra Editore paperback

IMAGINATION OF A MONARCHY Studies in Ptolemaic Propaganda
University of Toronto Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0802043135 . Very slight shelfwear else Fine. ; Phoenix Supplementary Volume; 300 pages; Scholars have long known that the Egyptian Ptolemaic monarchy underwent a transformation between 323 and 30 BC. The queens of that dynasty started as subordinates of the kings but ended as their superiors. Exactly when and how this change occurred has proven problematic for modern scholars. R. A. Hazzard argues that this change was put in motion by Ptolemy II who glorified his sister ArsinoT and made acceptable a civilian style of kingship based on piety towards his real and mythical ancestors. Ptolemy's support and elevation of his sister inspired the queens of the line to assert themselves at the expense of their male associates. The process culminated in the absolute rule of Kleopatra VII after 47 BC. Hazzard presents a clear argument based on the numismatic epigraphical papyrological literary and historical sources. . Franz Steiner Verlag. Fine with no dust jacket. 2009. Hardcover. 351509167X . 506 pages; The imaginary subjects of the Roman writers Cicero and Sallust demonstrate how strongly the political culture of Rome was influenced by historical perception. Both authors derived the impulse for their political actions from the place within historical continuity at which they located themselves. Additionally the impressive self-confidence with which they predicted the future success of the radical changes they proposed constitutes a clear indication of the unbroken capacity for learning and regeneration of the republican institutional system. Caesar's use of tribuni plebis; A comparision of Marius Pompey and Caesar. Section 2: The Lesser Figures. IV. Saturninus and Glaucia: a quest for power; V. The Characters of Drusus and Sulpicia; VI. Clodius and Milo: more equals than opposites; A comparison of Saturninus and Glaucia Drusus and Sulpicius Clodius and Milo. ; 221 pages; The reputations of a great many figures in history have been established by chance and opportunity: a single victory on the battlefield a political triumph in domestic affairs. This statement is equally applicable for that century between 146 and 31 BC which today is usually designated the Late Roman Republic. On the basis of often rather meagre facts reputations have been constructed and as a result whole careers became mythologised by later writers even in antiquity. The main aim of this volume is to question certain reputations in order to place into a more realistic historical context the subjects under discussion. . Unisa Press paperback

AN HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON THE HELLENICA OXYRHYNCHIA
Cambridge University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521043522 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a résumé of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

PERICLES ON STAGE Political Comedy in Aristophanes' Early Plays
University of Texas Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0292787278 . Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; 255 pages; Since the eighteenth century classical scholars have generally agreed that the Greek playwright Aristophanes did not as a matter of course write "political" plays. Yet according to an anonymous Life of Aristophanes when Dionysius the tyrant of Syracuse wanted to know about the government of Athens Plato sent him a copy of Aristophanes' Clouds. In this boldly revisionist work Michael Vickers convincingly argues that in his earlier plays Aristophanes in fact commented on the day-to-day political concerns of Athenians. Vickers reads the first six of Aristophanes' eleven extant plays in a way that reveals the principal characters to be based in large part on Pericles and his ward Alcibiades. According to Vickers the plays of Aristophanes--far from being nonpolitical--actually allow us to gauge the reaction of the Athenian public to the events that followed Pericles' death in 429 B.C. to the struggle for the political succession and to the problems presented by Alcibiades' emergence as one of the most powerful figures in the state. This view of Aristophanes reaffirms the central role of allegory in his work and challenges all students of ancient Greece to rethink long-held assumptions about this important playwright. . POPE HOMER AND MANLINESS Some Aspects of Eighteenth-Century Classical Learning
Routledge. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0415056004 . 240 pages; The conflict between masculine and feminine values in 18th century classical learning is problematic and controversial. In this book Pope's Homer becomes a richly complex focus for new gendered explorations into the nature of the masculine "rule". As the subject of this gendered reading Pope's Homer emerges as the fissured relic of a struggle to preserve masculine dignity from the encroachments of feminine characters and values within the text and of female readers and critics. This text brings a fresh viewpoint and much detailed research on classical and early modern literature to bear on gender studies' central issues revealing that "masculinity" must here be seen not as an absolute standard but as the product of unceasing conflict between competing and unstable models. .
